Commentary on the Gospel According to St. John, Chapter 4:
Jesus and the disciples are journeying to Galilee and stop to rest at an historic well. While there, Jesus engages a woman in a discussion. Through this dialogue, He explains His role in stages: He offers living water that leads to eternal life, He has knowledge that proves He is a prophet, and He reveals himself as the Christ. The woman becomes an evangelist, and Jesus explains to the disciples that there is a spiritual harvest she has begun. Upon reaching Galilee, Jesus performs His second sign by healing a sick child, thus demonstrating His ability to offer life.

Jesus and the Woman of Samaria
1 Now when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 3 he left Judea and departed again to Galilee. 4 He had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there, and so Jesus, wearied as he was with his journey, sat down beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?” 13 Jesus said to her, “Every one who drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband; this you said truly.” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain;* and you say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when he comes, he will show us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”
27 Just then his disciples came. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but none said, “What do you wish?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water jar, and went away into the city, and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the city and were coming to him.
31 Meanwhile the disciples begged him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” 33 So the disciples said to one an other, “Has any one brought him food?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see how the fields are al ready white for harvest. 36 He who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. 37 For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor; others have la bored, and you have entered into their labor.”
39 Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of your words that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”
Jesus Departs for Galilee
43 After the two days he de parted to Galilee. 44 For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45 So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast, for they too had gone to the feast.
Jesus Heals an Official’s Son
46 So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48 Jesus therefore said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.” 49 The official said to him, “Sir, come down be fore my child dies.” 50 Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went his way. 51 As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was living. 52 So he asked them the hour when he began to mend, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live”; and he him self believed, and all his house hold. 54 This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.
*Daily Lectio Divina Question:
When Jesus encounters the Samaritan woman at the well, he speaks plainly to her about her sins. But notice, he doesn't shame her, he identifies her sins so that she may be freed from them and become the source of the encounter the rest of the town has with Jesus. Today, ask Jesus to show you where there are areas of sin in your life - He will not bring shame! Then, schedule a time to go to confession and allow him to release you of these sins so that you can become free to be who you were meant to be.

1 Por eso, cuando supo Jesús que los fariseos
habían oído que él hacía más discípulos
y bautizaba más que Juan 2 –aunque
no era Jesús quien bautizaba, sino sus
discípulos–, 3 abandonó Judea y se marchó
otra vez a Galilea. 4 Tenía que pasar por Samaría.
5 Llegó entonces a una ciudad de Samaría,
llamada Sicar, junto al campo
que le dio Jacob a su hijo José. 6 Estaba
allí el pozo de Jacob. Jesús, fatigado del
camino, se había sentado en el pozo. Era
más o menos la hora sexta.
7 Vino una mujer de Samaría a sacar
agua. Jesús le dijo:
–Dame de beber 8 –sus discípulos se
habían marchado a la ciudad a comprar
alimentos.
9 Entonces le dijo la mujer samaritana:
–¿Cómo tú, siendo judío, me pides
de beber a mí, que soy una mujer samaritana?
–porque los judíos no se tratan
con los samaritanos.
10 Jesús le respondió:
–Si conocieras el don de Dios y
quién es el que te dice: «Dame de beber
», tú le habrías pedido a él y él te habría
dado agua viva.
11 La mujer le dijo:
–Señor, no tienes nada con qué sacar
agua, y el pozo es hondo, ¿de dónde
vas a sacar el agua viva? 12 ¿O es que eres
tú mayor que nuestro padre Jacob, que
nos dio este pozo, del cual bebieron él,
sus hijos y sus ganados?
13 –Todo el que bebe de esta agua
tendrá sed de nuevo –respondió Jesús–,
14 pero el que beba del agua que
yo le daré no tendrá sed nunca más,
sino que el agua que yo le daré se hará
en él fuente de agua que salta hasta la
vida eterna.
15 –Señor, dame de esa agua, para
que no tenga sed ni tenga que venir hasta
aquí a sacarla –le dijo la mujer.
16 Él le contestó:
–Anda, llama a tu marido y vuelve
aquí.
17 –No tengo marido –le respondió
la mujer.
Jesús le contestó:
–Bien has dicho: «No tengo marido
», 18 porque has tenido cinco y el que
tienes ahora no es tu marido; en esto
has dicho la verdad.
19 –Señor, veo que tú eres un profeta
–le dijo la mujer–. 20 Nuestros padres
adoraron a Dios en este monte, y vosotros
decís que el lugar donde se debe
adorar está en Jerusalén.
21 Le respondió Jesús:
–Créeme, mujer, llega la hora en que
ni en este monte ni en Jerusalén adoraréis
al Padre. 22 Vosotros adoráis lo que
no conocéis, nosotros adoramos lo que
conocemos, porque la salvación procede
de los judíos. 23 Pero llega la hora, y
es ésta, en la que los verdaderos adoradores
adorarán al Padre en espíritu y en
verdad. Porque así son los adoradores
que el Padre busca. 24 Dios es espíritu, y
los que le adoran deben adorar en espíritu
y en verdad.
25 –Sé que el Mesías, el llamado Cristo,
va a venir –le dijo la mujer–. Cuando
él venga nos anunciará todas las cosas.
26 Le respondió Jesús:
–Yo soy, el que habla contigo.
27 A continuación llegaron sus discípulos,
y se sorprendieron de que estuviera
hablando con una mujer. Pero
ninguno le preguntó: «¿Qué buscas?»,
o «¿de qué hablas con ella?» 28 La mujer
dejó su cántaro, fue a la ciudad y le dijo
a la gente:
29 –Venid a ver a un hombre que me
ha dicho todo lo que he hecho. ¿No será
él el Cristo?
30 Salieron de la ciudad y fueron
adonde él estaba. 31 Entretanto los discípulos le rogaban
diciendo:
–Rabbí, come.
32 Pero él les dijo:
–Para comer yo tengo un alimento
que vosotros no conocéis.
33 Decían los discípulos entre sí:
–¿Pero es que le ha traído alguien de
comer?
34 Jesús les dijo:
–Mi alimento es hacer la voluntad
del que me ha enviado y llevar a cabo
su obra. 35 ¿No decís vosotros que faltan
cuatro meses para la siega? Pues yo os
digo: levantad los ojos y mirad los campos
que están dorados para la siega; 36 el
segador recibe ya su jornal y recoge el
fruto para la vida eterna, para que se gocen
juntos el que siembra y el que siega.
37 Pues en esto es verdadero el refrán de
que uno es el que siembra y otro el que
siega. 38 Yo os envié a segar lo que vosotros
no habéis trabajado; otros trabajaron
y vosotros os habéis aprovechado
de su esfuerzo.
39 Muchos samaritanos de aquella
ciudad creyeron en él por la palabra de
la mujer que atestiguaba: «Me ha dicho
todo lo que he hecho». 40 Así que, cuando
los samaritanos llegaron adonde él
estaba, le pidieron que se quedara con
ellos. Y se quedó allí dos días. 41 Entonces
creyeron en él muchos más por su
predicación. 42 Y le decían a la mujer:
–Ya no creemos por tu palabra; nosotros
mismos hemos oído y sabemos
que éste es en verdad el Salvador del
mundo.
43 Dos días después marchó de allí
hacia Galilea. 44 Pues Jesús mismo había
dado testimonio de que a un profeta no
le honran en su propia tierra. 45 Cuando
vino a Galilea, le recibieron los galileos
porque habían visto todo cuanto hizo
en Jerusalén durante la fiesta, pues también
ellos habían ido a la fiesta.
46 Entonces vino de nuevo a Caná de
Galilea, donde había convertido el agua
en vino. Había allí un funcionario real,
cuyo hijo estaba enfermo en Cafarnaún,
47 el cual, al oír que Jesús venía de Judea
hacia Galilea, se le acercó para rogarle
que bajase y curara a su hijo, porque estaba
a punto de morir. 48 Jesús le dijo:
–Si no veis signos y prodigios, no
creéis.
49 Le respondió el funcionario real:
–Señor, baja antes de que se muera
mi hijo.
50 Jesús le contestó:
–Vete, tu hijo está vivo.
Aquel hombre creyó en la palabra
que Jesús le dijo y se marchó.
51 Mientras bajaba, sus siervos le salieron
al encuentro diciendo que su hijo
estaba vivo. 52 Les preguntó la hora en
que empezó a mejorar. Le respondieron:
–Ayer a la hora séptima le dejó la
fiebre.
53 Entonces el padre cayó en la cuenta
de que precisamente en aquella hora
Jesús le había dicho: «Tu hijo está vivo».
Y creyó él y toda su casa.
54 Este segundo signo lo hizo Jesús
cuando vino de Judea a Galilea.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
Cuando Jesús encuentra a la Samaritama en el pozo, el le habla directamente de sus pecados. Pero nota que él no la avengüenza, él identifica sus pecados para que ella sea liberada de ellos y convertirse en la fuente de encuentro que el resto del pueblo tiene con Jesús. Hoy, pídele a Jesús que te muestre en dónde hay áreas de pecado en tu vida - ¡Él no te traerá vergüenza! Luego, aparta un tiempo para ir a la confesión y permítele que te libere de estos pecados para que puedas tener la libertad de ser quién fuiste hecho para ser.
