Commentary on the Gospel According to St. John, Chapter 3:
Jesus’ actions have raised interest in Him, so Jewish leader Nicodemus visits. Through their discussion, Jesus explains that to see God one must be born of water and Spirit – concepts that will be repeated in the Gospel. Jesus references His own descent from Heaven and how He will be lifted up to offer eternal life. Meanwhile, John the Baptist is decreasing his ministry because Jesus, the bridegroom, has arrived. The importance of accepting Jesus is reiterated by stating that those who believe will have eternal life and those who do not will face God’s wrath.

Nicodemus Visits Jesus
1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born anew.’ 8 The wind blows where it wills, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with every one who is born of the Spirit.” 9 Nicodemus said to him, “How can this be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand this? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen; but you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.” 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. 18 He who believes in him is not condemned; he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does what is true comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God.
Jesus and John the Baptist
22 After this Jesus and his disciples went into the land of Judea; there he remained with them and baptized. 23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people came and were baptized. 24 For John had not yet been put in prison.
25 Now a discussion arose be tween John’s disciples and a Jew over purifying. 26 And they came to John, and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you bore witness, here he is, baptizing, and all are going to him.” 27 John answered, “No one can receive anything except what is given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him. 29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice; therefore this joy of mine is now full. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”
He Who Comes from Heaven
31 He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth belongs to the earth, and of the earth he speaks; he who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony; 33 he who receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. 34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for it is not by measure that he gives the Spirit; 35 the Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand. 36 He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests upon him.

John 3:16 is one of the most famous verses in all of scripture. Today, sit quietly with the passage and think about what the implications of this passage are for you, personally. God so loved YOU that he gave his only-begotten son. GOD LOVES YOU. That is not a superficial truth! Today, ask God to show you explicitly that he loves you, particularly and individually.

1 Había entre los fariseos un hombre
que se llamaba Nicodemo, judío influyente.
2 Éste vino a él de noche y le dijo:
–Rabbí, sabemos que has venido de
parte de Dios como Maestro, pues nadie
puede hacer los signos que tú haces
si Dios no está con él.
3 Contestó Jesús y le dijo:
–En verdad, en verdad te digo que si
uno no nace de lo alto no puede ver el
Reino de Dios.
4 Nicodemo le respondió:
–¿Cómo puede un hombre nacer
siendo viejo? ¿Acaso puede entrar otra
vez en el seno de su madre y nacer?
5 Jesús contestó:
–En verdad, en verdad te digo que si
uno no nace del agua y del Espíritu no
puede entrar en el Reino de Dios. 6 Lo
nacido de la carne, carne es; y lo nacido
del Espíritu, espíritu es. 7 No te sorprendas
de que te haya dicho que debéis
nacer de nuevo. 8 El viento sopla donde
quiere y oyes su voz pero no sabes de
dónde viene ni adónde va. Así es todo el
que ha nacido del Espíritu.
9 Respondió Nicodemo y le dijo:
–¿Y eso cómo puede ser?
10 Contestó Jesús:
–¿Tú eres maestro en Israel y lo ignoras?
11 En verdad, en verdad te digo que
hablamos de lo que sabemos, y damos
testimonio de lo que hemos visto, pero
no recibís nuestro testimonio. 12 Si os he
hablado de cosas terrenas y no creéis,
¿cómo ibais a creer si os hablara de cosas
celestiales? 13 Pues nadie ha subido al
cielo, sino el que bajó del cielo, el Hijo
del Hombre. 14 Igual que Moisés levantó
la serpiente en el desierto, así debe ser levantado
el Hijo del Hombre, 15 para que
todo el que crea tenga vida eterna en él.
16 Tanto amó Dios al mundo que le
entregó a su Hijo Unigénito, para que
todo el que cree en él no perezca, sino
que tenga vida eterna. 17 Pues Dios no
envió a su Hijo al mundo para juzgar al
mundo, sino para que el mundo se salve
por él. 18 El que cree en él no es juzgado;
pero quien no cree ya está juzgado, porque
no cree en el nombre del Hijo Unigénito
de Dios. 19 Éste es el juicio: que vino
la luz al mundo y los hombres amaron
más las tinieblas que la luz, porque sus
obras eran malas. 20 Pues todo el que obra
mal odia la luz y no viene a la luz, para
que sus obras no le acusen. 21 Pero el que
obra según la verdad viene a la luz, para
que sus obras se pongan de manifiesto,
porque han sido hechas según Dios.
22 Después de esto fue Jesús con sus discípulos
a la región de Judea, y allí convivía
con ellos y bautizaba. 23 También Juan
estaba bautizando en Ainón, cerca de Salim,
porque allí había mucha agua, y acudían
a que los bautizara 24 –porque aún no
habían encarcelado a Juan.
25 Se originó una discusión entre los
discípulos de Juan y un judío acerca de la
purificación. 26 Y fueron a Juan a decirle:
–Rabbí, el que estaba contigo al otro
lado del Jordán, de quien tú diste testimonio,
está bautizando y todos se dirigen
a él.
27 Respondió Juan:
–No puede el hombre apropiarse
nada si no le es dado del cielo. 28 Vosotros
mismos me sois testigos de que
dije: «Yo no soy el Cristo, sino que he
sido enviado delante de él». 29 Esposo es
el que tiene la esposa; el amigo del esposo,
el que está presente y le oye, se alegra
mucho con la voz del esposo. Por eso,
mi alegría es completa. 30 Es necesario
que él crezca y que yo disminuya.
31 El que viene de lo alto está sobre
todos. El que es de la tierra, de la tierra
es y de la tierra habla. El que viene del
cielo está sobre todos, 32 y da testimonio
de lo que ha visto y oído, pero nadie
recibe su testimonio. 33 El que recibe
su testimonio confirma que Dios es veraz;
34 pues aquel a quien Dios ha enviado
habla las palabras de Dios, porque da
el Espíritu sin medida. 35 El Padre ama al
Hijo y todo lo ha puesto en sus manos.
36 El que cree en el Hijo tiene vida eterna,
pero quien rehúsa creer en el Hijo
no verá la vida, sino que la ira de Dios
pesa sobre él.

Juan 3:16 es uno de los versos más famosos en toda la escritura. Hoy, siéntate en silencio con el pasaje y piensa cuáles son las implicaciones de este pasaje para tí de manera personal. Dios te amó tanto a TÍ que nos entregó a su único hijo. DIOS TE AMA . ¡Esa no es una verdad superficial! Hoy, pídele a Dios que te muestre explícitamente que te ama, particularmente e individualmente.
