Commentary on the Gospel According to St. John, Chapter 5:
Jesus heals a paralyzed man on the Sabbath, and this sign is the catalyst for a teaching on Jesus’ role and why belief has eternal value. Those who are suspicious of Jesus challenge the healed man for working on the Sabbath and persecute Jesus for healing on the Sabbath. Jesus answers by giving His mission statement which explains He is the Son of the Father, His will is united to the Father’s, and these give Him certain rights. How people respond to Jesus reflects on the Father who sent Him and is impacted by their desire for human glory. Their choice will have an ever-lasting effect at the end times when they will experience resurrection to life or resurrection to judgment.
The Gospel According to St. John, Chapter 5:
Jesus Heals on the Sabbath
1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Hebrew called Bethzatha, which has five porticoes. 3 In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, paralyzed. 5 One man was there, who had been ill for thirty eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him and knew that he had been lying there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” 7 The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is troubled, and while I am going another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your pallet, and walk.” 9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his pallet and walked.
Now that day was the sabbath. 10 So the Jews said to the man who was cured, “It is the sabbath, it is not lawful for you to carry your pallet.” 11 But he answered them, “The man who healed me said to me, ‘Take up your pallet, and walk.’ ” 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your pallet, and walk’?” 13 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14 Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse befall you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16 And this was why the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did this on the sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working still, and I am working.” 18 This was why the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath but also called God his Father, making himself equal with God.
The Authority of the Son
19 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever he does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows him all that he himself is doing; and greater works than these will he show him, that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22 The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life; he does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself, 27 and has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come forth, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.
The Testimony to Jesus
30 “I can do nothing on my own authority; as I hear, I judge; and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. 31 If I bear witness to myself, my testimony is not true; 32 there is another who bears witness to me, and I know that the testimony which he bears to me is true. 33 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Not that the testimony which I receive is from man; but I say this that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36 But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has granted me to accomplish, these very works which I am doing, bear me witness that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness to me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen; 38 and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe him whom he has sent. 39 You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness to me; 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41 I do not receive glory from men. 42 But I know that you have not the love of God within you. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. 44 How can you believe, who receive glory from one an other and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? 45 Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; it is Moses who accuses you, on whom you set your hope. 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote of me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”
*Daily Lectio Divina Question:
In today's reading, Jesus runs into conflict with the Jewish leaders. He challenges their views and so they reject him. He warns them of their decision because of the authority he has as the Son of the Father. Are there parts of my worldview, my morality, my beliefs about life and belief that are being challenged by the Son of God? Ask Jesus today what needs to be converted in you and then welcome him as a guest into your heart to change it.

5 1 Después de esto se celebraba una
fiesta de los judíos, y Jesús subió a
Jerusalén. 2 Hay en Jerusalén, junto a la
puerta de las ovejas, una piscina, llamada
en hebreo Betzata, que tiene cinco
pórticos, 3 bajo los que yacía una muchedumbre
de enfermos, ciegos, cojos y
paralíticos. (4 )
5 Estaba allí un hombre que padecía
una enfermedad desde hacía treinta
y ocho años. 6 Jesús, al verlo tendido
y sabiendo que llevaba ya mucho tiempo,
le dijo:
–¿Quieres curarte?
7 El enfermo le contestó:
–Señor, no tengo a nadie que me
meta en la piscina cuando se mueve el
agua; mientras voy, baja otro antes que
yo.
8 Le dijo Jesús:
–Levántate, toma tu camilla y ponte
a andar.
9 Al instante aquel hombre quedó
sano, tomó su camilla y echó a andar.
Aquel día era sábado. 10 Entonces le
dijeron los judíos al que había sido curado:
–Es sábado y no te es lícito llevar la
camilla.
11 Él les respondió:
–El que me ha curado es el que me
dijo: «Toma tu camilla y anda».
12 Le interrogaron:
–¿Quién es el hombre que te dijo:
«Toma tu camilla y anda»?
13 El que había sido curado no sabía
quién era, pues Jesús se había apartado
de la muchedumbre allí congregada.
14 Después de esto lo encontró Jesús
en el Templo y le dijo:
–Mira, estás curado; no peques más
para que no te ocurra algo peor.
15 Se marchó aquel hombre y les dijo
a los judíos que era Jesús el que le había
curado. 16 Por eso perseguían los judíos a
Jesús, porque había hecho esto un sábado.
17 Jesús les replicó:
–Mi Padre no deja de trabajar, y yo
también trabajo.
18 Por esto los judíos con más ahínco
intentaban matarle, porque no sólo
quebrantaba el sábado, sino que también
llamaba a Dios Padre suyo, haciéndose
igual a Dios.
19 Respondió Jesús y les dijo:
–En verdad, en verdad os digo que
el Hijo no puede hacer nada por sí mismo,
sino lo que ve hacer al Padre; pues
lo que Él hace, eso lo hace del mismo
modo el Hijo. 20 Porque el Padre ama al
Hijo y le muestra todo lo que Él hace,
y le mostrará obras mayores que éstas
para que vosotros os maravilléis. 21 Pues
así como el Padre resucita a los muertos
y les da vida, del mismo modo el Hijo
da vida a quienes quiere. 22 El Padre no
juzga a nadie, sino que todo juicio lo ha
dado al Hijo, 23 para que todos honren al
Hijo como honran al Padre. El que no
honra al Hijo no honra al Padre que le
ha enviado.
24 »En verdad, en verdad os digo que
el que escucha mi palabra y cree en el
que me envió tiene vida eterna, y no viene
a juicio sino que de la muerte pasa a
la vida. 25 En verdad, en verdad os digo
que llega la hora, y es ésta, en la que los
muertos oirán la voz del Hijo de Dios;
y los que la oigan vivirán, 26 pues como
el Padre tiene vida en sí mismo, así ha
dado al Hijo tener vida en sí mismo. 27 Y
le dio la potestad de juzgar, ya que es el
Hijo del Hombre. 28 No os maravilléis de
esto, porque viene la hora en la que todos
los que están en los sepulcros oirán
su voz; 29 y los que hicieron el bien saldrán
para la resurrección de la vida; y
los que practicaron el mal, para la resurrección
del juicio.
30 Yo no puedo hacer nada por mí mismo:
según oigo, así juzgo; y mi juicio es
justo, porque no busco mi voluntad sino la
voluntad del que me envió.
31 »Si yo diera testimonio de mí mismo,
mi testimonio no sería verdadero.
32 Otro es el que da testimonio de mí, y
sé que es verdadero el testimonio que da
de mí. 33 Vosotros habéis enviado mensajeros
a Juan y él ha dado testimonio de la
verdad. 34 Pero yo no recibo el testimonio
de hombre, sino que os digo esto para
que os salvéis. 35 Aquél era la antorcha
que ardía y alumbraba, y vosotros quisisteis
alegraros por un momento con su
luz. 36 Pero yo tengo un testimonio mayor
que el de Juan, pues las obras que
me ha dado mi Padre para que las lleve a
cabo, las mismas obras que yo hago, dan
testimonio acerca de mí, de que el Padre
me ha enviado. 37 Y el Padre que me
ha enviado, Él mismo ha dado testimonio
de mí. Vosotros no habéis oído nunca
su voz ni habéis visto su rostro; 38 ni
permanece su palabra en vosotros, porque
no creéis en éste a quien Él envió.
39 Examinad las Escrituras, ya que vosotros
pensáis tener en ellas la vida eterna:
ellas son las que dan testimonio de mí.
40 Y no queréis venir a mí para tener vida.
41 »Yo no busco recibir gloria de los
hombres; 42 pero os conozco y sé que no
hay amor de Dios en vosotros. 43 Yo he
venido en nombre de mi Padre y no me
recibís; si otro viniera en nombre propio,
a ése lo recibiríais. 44 ¿Cómo podéis
creer vosotros, que recibís gloria unos
de otros, y no queréis la gloria que procede
del único Dios? 45 No penséis que
yo os acusaré ante el Padre; hay quien
os acusa: Moisés, en quien vosotros tenéis
puesta la esperanza. 46 En efecto, si
creyeseis a Moisés, tal vez me creeríais
a mí, pues él escribió sobre mí. 47 Pero si
no creéis en sus escritos, ¿cómo vais a
creer en mis palabras?
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
En la lectura de hoy, Jesús entra en conflicto con los líderes judíos. Él cuestiona sus puntos de vista y entonces ellos lo rechazan. Él les advierte que tengan cuidado por su decisión dada la autoridad que él tiene como el Hijo del Padre. ¿Hay apectos de mi manera de ver el mundo, mi moralidad, mis creencias acerca de la vida y creencias que están siendo cuestionados por el Hijo de Dios? Pregúntale hoy a Jesús qué necesita ser convertido en tí y luego dale la bienvenida como un visitante en tu corazón para que lo cambie.
