The Temptation of Jesus
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written,
‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written,
‘He will give his angels charge of you,’
and
‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them; 9 and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Begone, Satan! for it is written,
‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’”
11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.
Jesus Begins Preaching in Galilee
12 Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; 13 and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
15 “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
toward the sea, across the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people who sat in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death
light has dawned.”
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Jesus Calls the First Disciples
18 As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.

Satan attacks Jesus by casting doubt about Jesus’ identity, his relation to the Father: “If you are the Son of God…” (4:6). Lord, what lies do I need to renounce in order to live more deeply in the truth being your son or daughter in Jesus?

1 Entonces fue conducido Jesús al desierto
por el Espíritu para ser tentado
por el diablo. 2 Después de haber ayunado
cuarenta días con cuarenta noches, sintió
hambre. 3 Y acercándose el tentador le dijo:
–Si eres Hijo de Dios, di que estas
piedras se conviertan en panes.
4 Él respondió:
–Escrito está:
No sólo de pan vivirá el hombre,
sino de toda palabra que procede
de la boca de Dios.
5 Luego, el diablo lo llevó a la Ciudad
Santa y lo puso sobre el pináculo del
Templo. 6 Y le dijo:
–Si eres Hijo de Dios, arrójate abajo.
Pues escrito está:
Dará órdenes a sus ángeles sobre ti,
para que te lleven en sus manos,
no sea que tropiece tu pie contra alguna
piedra.
7 Y le respondió Jesús:
–Escrito está también: No tentarás
al Señor tu Dios.
8 De nuevo lo llevó el diablo a un
monte muy alto y le mostró todos los
reinos del mundo y su gloria, 9 y le dijo:
–Todas estas cosas te daré si postrándote
me adoras.
10 Entonces le respondió Jesús:
–Apártate, Satanás, pues escrito está:
Al Señor tu Dios adorarás
y solamente a Él darás culto.
11 Entonces le dejó el diablo, y los ángeles
vinieron y le servían.
12 Cuando oyó que Juan había sido
encarcelado, se retiró a Galilea. 13 Y dejando
Nazaret se fue a vivir a Cafarnaún,
ciudad marítima, en los confines
de Zabulón y Neftalí, 14 para que se
cumpliera lo dicho por medio del profeta
Isaías:
15 Tierra de Zabulón y tierra de Neftalí
en el camino del mar,
al otro lado del Jordán,
la Galilea de los gentiles,
16 el pueblo que yacía en tinieblas
ha visto una gran luz;
para los que yacían en región
y sombra de muerte
una luz ha amanecido.
17 Desde entonces comenzó Jesús a
predicar y a decir:
–Convertíos, porque está al llegar el
Reino de los Cielos.
18 Mientras caminaba junto al mar
de Galilea vio a dos hermanos, Simón
el llamado Pedro y Andrés su hermano,
que echaban la red al mar, pues eran
pescadores. 19 Y les dijo:
–Seguidme y os haré pescadores de
hombres.
20 Ellos, al momento, dejaron las redes
y le siguieron. 21 Pasando adelante,
vio a otros dos hermanos, Santiago
el de Zebedeo y Juan su hermano, que
estaban en la barca con su padre Zebedeo
remendando sus redes; y los llamó.
22 Ellos, al momento, dejaron la barca y a
su padre, y le siguieron.
23 Recorría Jesús toda la Galilea enseñando
en las sinagogas, predicando el
Evangelio del Reino y curando toda enfermedad
y dolencia del pueblo.
24 Su fama se extendió por toda Siria;
y le traían a todos los que se sentían
mal, aquejados de diversas enfermedades
y dolores, a los endemoniados, lunáticos
y paralíticos, y los curaba. 25 Y le
seguían grandes multitudes de Galilea,
Decápolis, Jerusalén, Judea y del otro
lado del Jordán.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina para el día de hoy
Satanás ataca a Jesús al sembrar la duda acerca de la identidad de Jesús, su relación con el Padre: "Si tú eres el Hijo de Dios..." (4:6). Señor, ¿a qué mentiras necesito renunciar para vivir más profundamente en la verdad, siendo tu hijo o hija en Jesús?
