The Preaching of John the Baptist
1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” 3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,
“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.”
4 Now John wore a garment of camel’s hair, and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan, 6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruit that befits repentance, 9 and do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Facing the prospect of judgment, John challenges his hearers not to cling to family lineage for salvation: “Do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’” Lord, what are the idols I hang on to that get in the way of clinging to You?

1 En aquellos días apareció Juan el Bautista
predicando en el desierto de Judea
2 y diciendo:
–Convertíos, porque está al llegar el
Reino de los Cielos.
3 Éste es aquel de quien habló el profeta
Isaías diciendo:
Voz del que clama en el desierto:
«Preparad el camino del Señor,
haced rectas sus sendas».
4 Llevaba Juan una vestidura de pelo
de camello con un ceñidor de cuero a
la cintura, y su comida eran langostas y
miel silvestre.
5 Entonces acudía a él Jerusalén, toda
Judea y toda la comarca del Jordán, 6 y
eran bautizados por él en el río Jordán,
confesando sus pecados. 7 Al ver que venían
a su bautismo muchos fariseos y
saduceos, les dijo:
–Raza de víboras, ¿quién os enseñó
a huir de la ira que va a venir? 8 Dad,
por tanto, un fruto digno de penitencia,
9 y no os justifiquéis interiormente pensando:
Tenemos por padre a Abrahán.
Porque os aseguro que Dios puede hacer
surgir de estas piedras hijos de Abrahán.
10 Ya está el hacha puesta junto a la raíz de
los árboles. Por tanto, todo árbol que no
da buen fruto se corta y se arroja al fuego.
11 »Yo os bautizo con agua para la
conversión, pero el que viene después
de mí es más poderoso que yo, a quien
no soy digno de llevarle las sandalias.
Él os bautizará en el Espíritu Santo y en
fuego. 12 Él tiene en su mano el bieldo y
limpiará su era, y recogerá su trigo en
el granero; en cambio, quemará la paja
con un fuego que no se apaga.
13 Entonces vino Jesús al Jordán desde
Galilea, para ser bautizado por Juan.
14 Pero éste se resistía diciendo:
–Soy yo quien necesita ser bautizado
por ti, ¿y vienes tú a mí?
15 Jesús le respondió:
–Déjame ahora, así es como debemos
cumplir nosotros toda justicia.
Entonces Juan se lo permitió. 16 Inmediatamente
después de ser bautizado,
Jesús salió del agua; y entonces se le
abrieron los cielos, y vio al Espíritu de
Dios que descendía en forma de paloma
y venía sobre él. 17 Y una voz desde
los cielos dijo:
–Éste es mi Hijo, el amado, en quien
me he complacido.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina para el día de hoy
Enfrentando la perspectiva del juicio, Juan reta a sus escuchas para no adherirse al linaje familiar para su salvación: "No presuman diciéndose a sí mismos, ´tenemos a Abraham como nuestro padre´" Señor, ¿cuáles son los ídoloes a los que me aferro que se interponen en el camino para adherirme a Tí?
