Commentary on the Book of Hosea, Chapter 8:

The Northern Kingdom, also called Israel, Ephraim, and Samaria, has not made keeping the Covenant a priority. Despite the people making an outward show of faith, God knows there are many national sins such as human-chosen kings that do not follow God, idol worship, and seeking protection and assistance from other nations instead of God. Because the people have forsaken the good from God and forgotten these blessings, God will treat them the same way. Their crops will not yield fruit, they will lose their leadership, and God will allow destruction of the human-made glory of their cities and palaces.

The Book of Hosea, Chapter 8:

Israel’s Apostasy

1 Set the trumpet to your lips, for a vulture is over the house of the Lord,
because they have broken my covenant,
and transgressed my law.
2 To me they cry,
My God, we Israel know you.
3 Israel has spurned the good; the enemy shall pursue him.
4 They made kings, but not through me.
They set up princes, but without my knowledge.
With their silver and gold they made idols
for their own destruction.
5 I have spurned your calf, O Samaria.
My anger burns against them.
How long will it be
till they are pure 6 in Israel?
A workman made it; it is not God.
The calf of Samaria
shall be broken to pieces.
7 For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the
whirlwind.
The standing grain has no heads,
it shall yield no meal; if it were to yield,
aliens would devour it.
8 Israel is swallowed up; already they are among the
nations
as a useless vessel.
9 For they have gone up to Assyria,
a wild donkey wandering alone;
Ephraim has hired lovers.
10 Though they hire allies among the nations,
I will soon gather them up.
And they shall cease for a little while
from anointing king and princes.
11 Because Ephraim has multiplied altars for sinning,
they have become to him altars for sinning.
12 Were I to write for him my laws by ten thousands,
they would be regarded as a strange thing.
13 They love sacrifice;
they sacrifice flesh and eat it;
but the Lord has no delight in them.
Now he will remember their iniquity,
and punish their sins; they shall return to Egypt.
14 For Israel has forgotten his Maker,
and built palaces;
and Judah has multiplied
fortified cities;
but I will send a fire upon
his cities,
and it shall devour his strongholds.

*Daily Lectio Divina Question:

"a vulture is over the house of The Lord." (v.1) Over what do vultures circle? What happens to our souls when we sin mortally? What is God trying to speak to you through this verse?

Oseas 8

1 ¡Haz sonar la trompeta!
Como águila sobre la casa del Señor,
porque han transgredido mi alianza
y se han rebelado contra mi Ley.
2Ellos me gritan:
«¡Dios mío!». Nosotros, Israel, te conocemos.
3Pero Israel ha rechazado el bien:
el enemigo le perseguirá.
4Ellos nombraron reyes
sin contar conmigo;
nombraron príncipes
sin saberlo Yo.
Con su plata y su oro
se hicieron ídolos para su perdición.
5Tu becerro, Samaría, ha sido repudiado.
Mi cólera se ha inflamado contra
ellos.
¿Hasta cuándo serán incapaces de
inocencia?
6Porque eso procede de Israel,
lo fabricó un artífice,
y eso no es Dios;
por tanto, en virutas se convertirá
el becerro de Samaría.
7Porque los que siembran vientos
cosecharán tempestades.
Brote que no tiene espiga
no dará harina,
y si acaso la da,
extraños se la tragarán.
Ruina de Israel por pactar con extranjeros
8Israel ha sido tragado.
Ahora están entre las naciones
como un cacharro inútil.
9Han subido a Asiria.
El onagro busca estar solo,
pero Efraím alquila amantes;
10aunque tengan negocios con las
naciones,
Yo los voy a reunir ahora,
y pronto se retorcerán por las cargas
del rey de príncipes.
11Efraím ha multiplicado los altares
para expiar su pecado,
pero se han convertido en altares
para pecar.
12Aunque les he escrito muchas leyes,
las tienen por cosa ajena.
13Me sacrifican holocaustos
y se comen la carne:
pero el Señor no se complace en
ellos.
Ahora Él va a recordar sus culpas,
y a tomarles cuenta de sus pecados:
volverán a Egipto.
14Israel ha olvidado a su Hacedor,
y edificado palacios;
Judá ha multiplicado las ciudades
fortificadas;
