Commentary on the Second Book of Samuel, Chapter 23:
We receive more poetic words of King David, these called an oracle, which suggests they are prophetic in nature. This recaps God’s support of David during his reign and the importance of being faithful. The rest of the chapter is a lengthy commemoration of those who fought with and supported David. This list reveals the stability and hierarchy in David’s army – it is truly a national army and not a group of mercenaries who come and go. It also reveals that David has wide support, even from people from non-Jewish backgrounds.

Last Words of David
1 Now these are the last words of David:
The oracle of David, the son of Jesse,
the oracle of the man who was raised on high,
the anointed of the God of Jacob,
the sweet psalmist of Israel:
2 “The Spirit of the Lord speaks by me,
his word is upon my tongue.
3 The God of Israel has spoken, the Rock of Israel has said to
me:
When one rules justly over men,
ruling in the fear of God,
4 he dawns on them like the morning light,
like the sun shining forth upon a cloudless morning,
like rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth.
5 Yes, does not my house stand so with God?
For he has made with me an everlasting covenant,
ordered in all things and secure.
For will he not cause to prosper
all my help and my desire?
6 But godless men are all like thorns that are thrown away;
for they cannot be taken with the hand;
7 but the man who touches them
arms himself with iron and the shaft of a spear,
and they are utterly
consumed with fire.”
David’s Mighty Men
8 These are the names of the mighty men whom David had:
Josheb-basshebeth a Tahchemonite; he was chief of the three; he wielded his spear against eight hundred whom he slew at one time.
9 And next to him among the three mighty men was Eleazar the son of Dodo, son of Ahohi. He was with David when they defied the Philistines who were gathered there for battle, and the men of Israel withdrew. 10 He rose and struck down the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clung to the sword; and the Lord wrought a great victory that day; and the men returned after him only to strip the slain.
11 And next to him was Shammah, the son of Agee the Hararite. The Philistines gathered together at Lehi, where there was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the men fled from the Philistines. 12 But he took his stand in the midst of the plot, and defended it, and slew the Philistines; and the Lord wrought a great victory.
13 And three of the thirty chief men went down, and came about harvest time to David at the cave of Adullam, when a band of Philistines was encamped in the valley of Rephaim. 14 David was then in the stronghold; and the garrison of the Philistines was
then at Bethlehem. 15 And David said longingly, “O that some one would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem which is by the gate!” 16 Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem which was by the gate, and took and brought it to David. But he would not drink of it; he poured it out to the Lord, 17 and said, “Far be it from me, O Lord, that I should do this. Shall I drink the blood of the men who went at the risk of their lives?” Therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.
18 Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the thirty. And he wielded his spear against three hundred men and slew them, and won a name beside the three. 19 He was the most renowned of the thirty, and became their commander; but he did not attain to the three.
20 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man of Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds; he struck two Ariels of Moab. He also went down and slew a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen. 21 And he slew an Egyptian, a handsome man. The Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but Benaiah went down to him with a staff, and snatched the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and slew him with his own spear. 22 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and won a name beside the three mighty men. 23 He was renowned among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three. And David set him over his bodyguard.
24 Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, 25 Shammah of Harod, Elika of Harod, 26 Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh of Tekoa, 27 Abiezer, of Anathoth, Mebunnai the Hushathite, 28 Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai of Netophah, 29 Heleb the son of Baanah of Netophah, Ittai the son of Ribai of Gibe-ah of the Benjaminites, 30 Benaiah of Pirathon, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash, 31 Abi-albon the Arbathite, Azmaveth of Bahurim, 32 Eliahba of Sha-albon, the sons of Jashen, Jonathan, 33 Shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Hararite, 34 Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai of Maacah, Eliam the son of Ahithophel of Gilo, 35 Hezro of Carmel, Paarai the Arbite, 36 Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani the Gadite, 37 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai of Be-eroth, the armor-bearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah, 38 Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite, 39 Uriah the Hittite: thirty-seven in all.

David:
–Oráculo de David, hijo de Jesé,
oráculo del varón elevado a lo más
alto,
del ungido del Dios de Jacob,
del dulce cantor de Israel.
2 El espíritu del Señor habla por mí
y sus palabras están en mi lengua.
3 Ha hablado el Dios de Jacob;
me ha dicho la Roca de Israel:
«El justo, el que gobierna a los hombres,
el que gobierna con temor de Dios,
4 es como la luz de la mañana
al salir el sol
en una mañana sin nubes,
que hace brillar después de la lluvia
la hierba de la tierra».
5 Así está mi casa ante Dios,
porque ha hecho conmigo
una alianza eterna,
bien dispuesta y afianzada.
¿No es Él quien hace germinar
mi salvación y mis deseos?
6 Pero los malvados son como espinos
que se tiran
y nadie los agarra con la mano:
7 quien los toca usa un hierro
o el asta de una lanza,
para que ardan por completo en el
fuego.
8 Éstos son los nombres de los héroes
de David:
Isbaal, el tajquemonita, primero de
los Tres, que blandió una lanza contra
ochocientos y los mató de una sola vez.
9 Después de él, Eleazar, hijo de
Dodó, el ajohita, otro de los Tres. Estaba
con David en Pas-Damim cuando los
filisteos se congregaron allí para la batalla.
Los israelitas se retiraban, 10 pero él
les hizo frente y estuvo abatiendo filisteos
hasta que se le agarrotó la mano y
se le quedó pegada a la espada. El Se-
ñor concedió aquel día una gran victoria
y el pueblo se volvió con Eleazar,
sólo para apoderarse del botín.
11 Después de él, Samá, hijo de Agué,
el hararita. Los filisteos se habían reunido
en Lejí, donde había un campo plantado
todo de lentejas. El pueblo huía
ante los filisteos, 12 pero Samá les hizo
frente en medio del campo, lo defendió
y se batió con los filisteos. El Señor concedió
una gran victoria.
13 Estos Tres de entre los Treinta bajaron
en tiempo de la siega y se acercaron
a David en la cueva de Adulam,
mientras una banda de filisteos acampaba
en el valle de Refaím. 14 David estaba
en la zona fortificada, pero un destacamento
de filisteos se apostaba en
Belén. 15 Entonces David manifestó este
deseo:
–¡Quién me diera de beber agua del
pozo de Belén, que está junto a la puerta!
16 Los Tres se abrieron paso a través
del campo filisteo, sacaron agua del
pozo que hay junto a la puerta de Belén
y se la llevaron a David. Él no quiso beberla,
sino que la derramó ante el Señor
17 diciendo:
–Lejos de mí, Señor, hacer tal cosa.
Sería como beber la sangre de estos
hombres que han arriesgado su vida
yendo allí.
Y no quiso beberla. Estas hazañas
las hicieron estos Tres.
18 Abisay, hermano de Joab, hijo de
Seruyá, era el primero de los Treinta.
Él es quien blandió la lanza contra trescientos
hombres, los mató y adquirió
fama entre los Treinta. 19 Fue el más glorioso
de los Treinta y el primero de todos;
pero no alcanzó la gloria de los Tres
primeros.
20 Después venía Benaías, hijo de Yoyadá,
oriundo de Causeel, hombre valeroso
y célebre por sus hazañas, que
mató a los dos hijos de Ariel de Moab
y, en un día de nieve, bajó a una cisterna
y allí mató un león. 21 Mató también
a un egipcio que era de enorme estatura:
éste tenía una lanza en su mano, pero
Benaías se acercó a él con un bastón, le
arrancó de su mano la lanza y con ella
lo mató. 22 Estas hazañas realizó Benaías,
hijo de Yoyadá, y adquirió fama entre
los Treinta. 23 Fue el más glorioso de los
Treinta, pero no alcanzó la gloria de los
Tres primeros. David lo puso al frente
de su guardia personal.
24 De los Treinta era también Asael,
hermano de Joab; Eljanán, hijo de Dodó
de Belén; 25 Samá, el jarodita; Elicá, el jarodita;
26 Jeles, el peleteo; Irá, hijo de
Iqués de Tecoa; 27 Abiézer de Anatot; Sibecay,
el jusatita; 28 Salmón, el ajohita;
Maray, el natufita; 29 Jeleb, hijo de Baaná,
el natufita; Itay, hijo de Ribay, de Guibeá
de Benjamín; 30 Benaías, el piratonita;
Hiday de Najale-Gaas; 31 Abialbón
de Arabá; Azmávet de Bajurim; 32 Eliajbá,
el saalbonita; Yasán de Gun; 33 Jonatán,
hijo de Samá, de Arar; Ajiam, hijo
de Sarar, de Arar; 34 Elifélet, hijo de Ajasbay,
de Maacá; Eliam, hijo de Ajitófel,
el guilonita; 35 Jesray de Carmel; Paaray
de Arab; 36 Yigal, hijo de Natán, de
Sobá; Bení de Gad; 37 Sélec, el amonita;
Najray de Beerot, escudero de Joab, hijo
de Seruyá; 38 Irá de Yatir; Guerab de Yatir;
39 y Urías, el hitita.
En total treinta y siete.
