Commentary on the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians, Chapter 3:
Still in the introduction to the main body of this letter to the Corinthians, Paul continues to reflect on the problem of division impacting the community of believers in Corinth. Paul echoes his concerns (1:10-17) of the Church being divided between allegiance to different leaders, a situation of cliques, jealousy, and unhealthy comparison of different leaders (vs. 2-4). Paul sets the foundation for unity by explaining the mystery of the Church, God’s call to gather and form using the images of agriculture (vs 5-9), constructing a building (vs. 10-15), and the assertion that even the individual believer is “God’s temple” (vs. 16). The foundation of unity for all those who believe in Jesus as Lord is Jesus Christ himself, the foundation (vs. 11, 23).

On Dissension in the Corinthian Church
1 But I, brethren, could not address you as spiritual men, but as men of the flesh, as infants in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk, not solid food; for you were not ready for it; and even yet you are not ready, 3 for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving like ordinary men? 4 For when one says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,”
are you not merely men?
5 What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is any thing, but only God who gives the growth. 8 He who plants and he who waters are equal, and each shall receive his wages according to his labor. 9 For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.
10 According to the commission of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and another man is building upon it. Let each man take care how he builds upon it. 11 For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw—13 each man’s work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14 If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.
16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 17 If any one destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and that temple you are.
18 Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” 20 and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.” 21 So let no one boast of men. For all things are yours, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future, all are yours; 23 and you are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.

3 1 Por mi parte, hermanos, no pude hablaros
como a espirituales, sino como a carnales,
como a niños en Cristo.
2 Os di a beber leche, no alimento sólido,
pues todavía no podíais soportarlo;
ni siquiera ahora podéis, 3 pues sois
todavía carnales. Porque mientras haya
entre vosotros envidias y discordias,
¿no continuáis siendo carnales y comportándoos
a lo humano?
4 Porque cuando uno de vosotros
dice: «Yo soy de Pablo»; y otro: «Yo, de
Apolo», ¿no procedéis a lo humano?
5 ¿Qué es Apolo? ¿Qué es Pablo? Ministros,
por medio de los cuales habéis
creído; cada uno según el Señor le ha
concedido. 6 Yo planté, Apolo regó, pero
es Dios quien dio el crecimiento; 7 de tal
modo que ni el que planta es nada, ni el
que riega, sino el que da el crecimiento,
Dios. 8 El que planta y el que riega son
una misma cosa; pero cada uno recibirá
su propia recompensa según su trabajo.
9 Porque nosotros somos colaboradores
de Dios; vosotros sois campo de Dios,
edificación de Dios.
10 Según la gracia de Dios que me
ha sido dada, yo puse los cimientos
como sabio arquitecto, y otro edifica sobre
ellos. Cada uno mire cómo edifica,
11 pues nadie puede poner otro cimiento
distinto del que está puesto, que es Jesucristo.
12 Si alguien edifica sobre este cimiento
con oro, plata, piedras preciosas,
madera, heno o paja, 13 la obra de cada
uno quedará al descubierto. Pues el Día
la pondrá de manifiesto, porque se revelará
con fuego, y el fuego probará el valor
de la obra de cada uno. 14 Si la obra
que uno edificó permanece, recibirá el
premio; 15 si su obra arde, sufrirá daño;
sin embargo, él se salvará, pero como a
través del fuego. 16 ¿No sabéis que sois
templo de Dios y que el Espíritu de Dios
habita en vosotros? 17 Si alguno destruye
el templo de Dios, Dios le destruirá a él;
porque el templo de Dios, que sois vosotros,
es santo.
18 Nadie se engañe: si alguno de vosotros
se tiene por sabio según el mundo,
que se haga necio para llegar a ser
sabio. 19 Pues la sabiduría de este mundo
es necedad delante de Dios. Porque
está escrito:
Él atrapa a los sabios en su astucia.
20 Y en otro lugar:
El Señor conoce los pensamientos de
los sabios,
y sabe que son vanos.
21 Por tanto, que nadie se gloríe en
los hombres; porque todas las cosas son
vuestras: 22 ya sea Pablo o Apolo o Cefas;
ya sea el mundo, la vida o la muerte; ya
sea lo presente o lo futuro; todas las cosas
son vuestras, 23 vosotros sois de Cristo,
y Cristo de Dios.

Pues nadie puede poner otro cimiento distinto del que está puesto, que es Jesucristo (v. 11). Señor, ¿hay algún Apolo, un Pablo o Cefas a quién me he dado o me he dado completamente a tí?
