Commentary on the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians Chapter 2:
Before diving deeper into addressing the internal divisions that are hurting the Church at Corinth, Paul reflects on his own past ministry in Corinth. His message was “to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified” (vs. 2). From this fundamental truth--that Jesus rescues us through the cross--comes the power of God, working in us, and all other wisdom revealed through the Holy Spirit (vs. 3-13). The Spirit allows us to know the gifts of grace God bestows on us and to interpret spiritual truths (vs. 10-13)--truly to “have the mind of Christ” (vs. 15) which will be necessary to discern how to navigate and bring unity to difficult situations of division within the Church at Corinth.

Proclaiming Christ Crucified
1 When I came to you, brethren, I did not come proclaiming to you the testimony c of God in lofty words or wisdom. 2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness and in much fear and trembling; 4 and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.
The True Wisdom of God
6 Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. 7 But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glorification. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him,” 10 God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For what person knows a man’s thoughts except the spirit of the man which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. 13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who possess the Spirit.
14 The unspiritual man does not receive the gifts of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 15 The spiritual man judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. 16 “For who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

2 1 Y yo, hermanos, cuando vine a vosotros,
no vine a anunciaros el misterio de Dios
con elocuencia o sabiduría sublimes, 2 pues
no me he preciado de saber otra cosa entre
vosotros sino a Jesucristo, y a éste, crucificado.
3 Y me he presentado ante vosotros
débil, y con temor y mucho temblor, 4 y
mi mensaje y mi predicación no se han
basado en palabras persuasivas de sabiduría,
sino en la manifestación del Espíritu
y del poder, 5 para que vuestra fe no
se fundamente en la sabiduría humana,
sino en el poder de Dios.
6 Ahora bien, enseñamos sabiduría
entre los perfectos, pero una sabiduría
no de este mundo ni de los gobernantes
de este mundo que son pasajeros; 7 sino
que enseñamos la sabiduría de Dios,
misteriosa, escondida, que Dios predestinó,
antes de los siglos, para nuestra
gloria. 8 Sabiduría que ninguno de los
gobernantes de este mundo ha conocido,
porque, de haberla conocido, nunca
habrían crucificado al Señor de la gloria;
9 sino que, según está escrito: Ni ojo
vio, ni oído oyó, ni pasó por el corazón
del hombre, las cosas que preparó Dios
para los que le aman.
10 A nosotros, en cambio, Dios nos
lo reveló por medio del Espíritu, porque
el Espíritu todo lo escudriña, incluso
las profundidades de Dios. 11 Pues
¿qué hombre sabe lo que hay en el hombre,
sino el espíritu del hombre que está
en él? Así también, las cosas de Dios
nadie las ha conocido sino el Espíritu
de Dios. 12 Pero nosotros no hemos recibido
el espíritu del mundo, sino el Espíritu
que viene de Dios, para que conozcamos
los dones que Dios nos ha
concedido; 13 y enseñamos estas cosas
no con palabras aprendidas por sabiduría
humana, sino con palabras aprendi-
das del Espíritu, expresando las cosas
espirituales con palabras espirituales.
14 El hombre no espiritual no percibe las
cosas del Espíritu de Dios, pues son necedad
para él y no puede conocerlas,
porque sólo se pueden enjuiciar según
el Espíritu. 15 Por el contrario, el hombre
espiritual juzga de todo, y a él nadie es
capaz de juzgarle.
16 Porque ¿quién conoció la mente del
Señor,
para darle lecciones?
Pues bien, nosotros tenemos la
mente de Cristo.
