Commentary on the Book of Revelation, Chapter 7:
Six seals have been opened on God’s scroll and disaster is coming to earth. We pause in this chapter to learn who will be able to stand before these approaching events (6:17). An angel carries God’s seal in order to seal 12,000 people from each of the twelve the Jewish tribes. This Old Testament imagery is fulfilled in New Testament terms as John sees in Heaven more people than can be numbered who have come from all nations. They wear robes that, through tribulation, have been washed in the Blood of the Lamb, rendering the robes white. We see this same use of white robes and being sealed in the sacrament of Baptism. This multitude in Heaven worships the Lamb and God on His Throne.

The 144,000 of Israel Sealed
1 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree. 2 Then I saw an other angel ascend from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, 3 saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God upon their foreheads.” 4 And I heard the number of the sealed, a hundred and forty-four thousand sealed, out of every tribe of the sons of Israel, 5 twelve thousand sealed out of the tribe of Judah, twelve thousand of the tribe of Reuben, twelve thousand of the tribe of Gad, 6 twelve thou sand of the tribe of Asher, twelve thousand of the tribe of Naphtali, twelve thousand of the tribe of Manasseh, 7 twelve thousand of the tribe of Simeon, twelve thou sand of the tribe of Levi, twelve thousand of the tribe of Issachar, 8 twelve thousand of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve thousand of the tribe of Joseph, twelve thou sand sealed out of the tribe of Benjamin.
The Multitude from Every Nation
9 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no man could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits upon the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 And all the angels stood round the throne and round the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.”
13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” 14 I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore are they before the throne of God,
and serve him day and night within his temple;
and he who sits upon the throne will shelter them with his presence.
16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more;
the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat.
17 For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd,
and he will guide them to springs of living water;
and God will wipe away every
tear from their eyes.”
*Daily Lectio Divina Question:
"For the Lamb...will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of Living Water." (v.17) Who is the Lamb who is also the Shepherd? Meditate on the paradox of the Lamb being the Shepherd. BONUS: What is "Living Water?" What impact and significance does this "Living Water" hold on my life?

1 Después de esto vi a cuatro ángeles de
pie sobre los cuatro ángulos de la tierra,
que retenían los cuatro vientos de la tierra
para que no soplara el viento ni sobre la tierra
ni sobre el mar ni sobre árbol alguno.
2 Y vi a otro ángel que subía del
oriente, y llevaba el sello de Dios vivo.
Con voz fuerte gritó a los cuatro ángeles
a los que se les había encargado hacer
daño a la tierra y al mar, 3 diciéndoles:
–¡No hagáis daño a la tierra, ni al
mar, ni a los árboles, hasta que hayamos
sellado en la frente a los siervos de nuestro
Dios!
4 Y oí el número de los sellados: ciento
cuarenta y cuatro mil sellados de todas
las tribus de los hijos de Israel. 5 De
la tribu de Judá, doce mil sellados; de la
tribu de Rubén, doce mil; de la tribu de
Gad, doce mil; 6 de la tribu de Aser, doce
mil; de la tribu de Neftalí, doce mil; de
la tribu de Manasés, doce mil; 7 de la
tribu de Simeón, doce mil; de la tribu
de Leví, doce mil; de la tribu de Isacar,
doce mil; 8 de la tribu de Zabulón, doce
mil; de la tribu de José, doce mil; de la
tribu de Benjamín, doce mil sellados.
9 Después de esto, en la visión, apareció
una gran multitud que nadie podía
contar, de todas las naciones, tribus,
pueblos y lenguas, de pie ante el trono
y ante el Cordero, vestidos con túnicas
blancas, y con palmas en las manos,
10 que gritaban con fuerte voz:
–¡La salvación viene de nuestro
Dios, que se sienta sobre el trono, y del
Cordero!
11 Y todos los ángeles estaban de pie
alrededor del trono, de los ancianos y
de los cuatro seres vivos, y cayeron sobre
sus rostros ante el trono y adoraron
a Dios, 12 diciendo:
–Amén. La bendición, la gloria, la
sabiduría, la acción de gracias, el honor,
el poder y la fortaleza pertenecen
a nuestro Dios por los siglos de los siglos.
Amén.
13 Entonces uno de los ancianos intervino
y me dijo:
–Éstos que están vestidos con túnicas
blancas, ¿quiénes son y de dónde
han venido?
14 –Señor mío, tú lo sabes –le respondí
yo.
Y me dijo:
–Éstos son los que vienen de la gran
tribulación, los que han lavado sus túnicas
y las han blanqueado con la sangre
del Cordero. 15 Por eso están ante el
trono de Dios y le sirven día y noche en
su templo, y el que se sienta en el trono
habitará en medio de ellos. 16 Ya no
pasarán hambre, ni tendrán sed, no les
agobiará el sol, ni calor alguno, 17 pues
el Cordero, que está en medio del trono,
será su pastor, que los conducirá a las
fuentes de las aguas de la vida, y Dios enjugará
toda lágrima de sus ojos.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
"Porque el Cordero... será su pastor, y los guiará a fuentes de Agua Viva". (v.17) ¿Quién es el Cordero que también es el Pastor? Medita sobre la paradoja de que el Cordero sea el Pastor. EXTRA: ¿Qué es el "Agua Viva"? ¿Qué impacto y significado tiene esta "Agua Viva" en mi vida?
