Commentary on the Book of Revelation, Chapter 18:

An angel sings of the fall of God’s great earthly enemy, Babylon. Those who were exploiting her sin to advance their own goals mourn her loss but do not offer to help her. Her destruction comes quickly, and there is an appeal for any faithful still with her to flee. While Babylon had appeared to be thriving during her union with evil and sin (17:3-6), she is now broken down, dark, silent, and without joy.

The Book of Revelation, Chapter 18:

The Fall of Babylon

1 After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority; and the earth was made bright with his splendor. 2 And he called out with a mighty voice, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great!
It has become a dwelling place of demons,
a haunt of every foul spirit,
a haunt of every foul and hateful bird;
3 for all nations have drunk the wine of her impure passion,
and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her,
and the merchants of the earth have grown rich with the wealth of her wantonness.”
4 Then I heard another voice from heaven saying,
“Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues; 5 for her sins are heaped high as
heaven,
and God has remembered her iniquities.
6 Render to her as she herself has rendered,
and repay her double for her deeds;
mix a double draught for her in the cup she mixed.
7 As she gloriﬁed herself and
played the wanton,
so give her a like measure of torment and mourning.
Since in her heart she says, ‘A queen I sit,
I am no widow, mourning I shall never see,’
8 so shall her plagues come in a single day,
pestilence and mourning and famine,
and she shall be burned with ﬁre;
for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.”
9 And the kings of the earth, who committed fornication and were wanton with her, will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning; 10 they will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say,
“Alas! alas! you great city, you mighty city, Babylon!
In one hour has your judgment come.”
11 And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo any more, 12 cargo of gold, silver, jewels and pearls, ﬁne linen, purple, silk and scarlet, all kinds of scented wood, all articles of ivory, all articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble, 13 cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, ﬁne ﬂour and wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls.
14 “The fruit for which your soul longed has gone from you,
and all your delicacies and your splendor are lost to you, never to be found again!”
15 The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud,
16 “Alas, alas, for the great city
that was clothed in ﬁne linen,
in purple and scarlet, adorned with gold, with
jewels, and with pearls!
17 In one hour all this wealth has been laid waste.”
And all shipmasters and sea faring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off 18 and cried out as they saw the smoke of her burning,
“What city was like the great city?”
19 And they threw dust on their heads, as they wept and mourned, crying out,
“Alas, alas, for the great city where all who had ships at sea grew rich by her
wealth!
In one hour she has been laid waste.
20 Rejoice over her, O heaven,
O saints and apostles and prophets,
for God has given judgment for you against her!”
21 Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying,
“So shall Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence,
and shall be found no more; 22 and the sound of harpists and minstrels, of ﬂute players
and trumpeters,
shall be heard in you no more;
and a craftsman of any craft shall be found in you no more;
and the sound of the millstone shall be heard in you no more;
23 and the light of a lamp
shall shine in you no more; and the voice of bridegroom
and bride
shall be heard in you no more;
for your merchants were the great men of the earth,
and all nations were deceived by your sorcery.
24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints,
and of all who have been
slain on earth.”

*Daily Lectio Divina Question:

This chapter describes an ancient city of sin, Babylon, from which "All the nations have drunk the wine of her impure passions." (v.3) Further, it talks about all the commodities that were traded in that city of sin, even "...slaves, that is, human souls." (v.13) Think about ways that various sin in your life is currently rendering you a slave--bitterness, resentment, unforgiveness, lust, idle talk. Are you like the kings and merchants in this chapter who grieve to see the source of your sin destroyed, or are you like the saints who are admonished to "Rejoice" (v.20) because "God has given judgement for you"(v.20) against that source of sin? Ask the Holy Spirit to help you cast off slavery to sin and take up instead son or daughter-ship in God.

Apocalipsis 18

1 Después de esto vi a otro ángel que
bajaba del cielo, con gran poder, y la
tierra quedó iluminada con su claridad. 2 Y
gritó con fuerte voz:
–¡Cayó, cayó la gran Babilonia y se
convirtió en morada de demonios, en
guarida de todo espíritu impuro y en
refugio de toda bestia inmunda y odiosa,
3 porque todas las naciones bebieron
del vino del furor de su lujuria, los reyes
de la tierra han fornicado con ella, y con
su desenfrenado lujo se han enriquecido
los mercaderes de la tierra!
4 Y oí otra voz del cielo que decía:
–Salid de ella, pueblo mío, para que
no seáis cómplices de sus pecados ni
participéis de sus castigos. 5 Porque sus
pecados llegaron hasta el cielo y se acordó
Dios de sus iniquidades. 6 Devolved
con arreglo a lo que ella dio; pagadle el
doble de lo que merecen sus obras; y en
la copa que os preparó, preparadle el
doble. 7 Tanto como se jactó y se entregó
a los placeres, dadle eso mismo en tormento
y llanto, porque dice en su corazón:
«Estoy sentada como una reina, no
soy viuda y jamás veré el llanto». 8 Por
eso en un solo día llegarán sus plagas, la
muerte, el llanto y el hambre, y será quemada
con fuego, porque poderoso es el
Señor Dios que la ha juzgado. 9 Entonces
los reyes de la tierra que fornicaron
y se entregaron a los placeres con ella,
cuando vean el humo de su incendio,
llorarán y se lamentarán por ella. 10 Se
alejarán de ella por el miedo a sus tormentos,
y dirán:
«¡Ay, ay de la gran ciudad,
Babilonia, la ciudad fuerte:
en una sola hora ha llegado tu condena!
»
11 »Los comerciantes de la tierra lloran
y gimen por ella, porque ya nadie
compra sus mercancías: 12 ni oro, plata,
piedras preciosas o perlas; ni lino, púrpura,
seda o escarlata; toda madera olorosa,
todo objeto de marfil y todos los
enseres de madera preciosa, de bronce,
de hierro y mármol; 13 canela, especias
aromáticas y perfumes, mirra, incienso;
vino, aceite, flor de harina y trigo; bestias
de carga, ovejas, caballos y carros;
esclavos y vidas humanas. 14 Todos los
frutos que tu alma apetecía se apartaron
de ti, y todo lo rico y espléndido pereció
para ti, y jamás lo volverás a encontrar.
15 »Los traficantes en estos negocios,
que se habían enriquecido a costa
de ella, se mantendrán lejos por miedo
a sus tormentos, y, llorando y gimiendo,
16 dirán:
«¡Ay, ay de la gran ciudad,
la que vestía de lino, púrpura y escarlata,
adornada con oro, piedras preciosas
y perlas:
17 en una sola hora han sido arrasadas
tantas riquezas!»
»Todos los pilotos y todos los navegantes,
los marineros y cuantos bregan
en la mar se quedaron lejos, 18 y gritaban
al ver el humo de su incendio: «¿Quién
igualaba a la gran ciudad?»
19 »Echaron polvo sobre sus cabezas
y gritaron llorando y gimiendo:
«¡Ay, ay de la gran ciudad,
con cuya opulencia se enriquecieron
todos los armadores de barcos:
en una sola hora ha sido arrasada!»
20 »Alégrate por ella, ¡oh cielo!, y los
santos, los apóstoles y los profetas, porque
Dios ha confirmado vuestra sentencia
contra ella.
21 Un ángel poderoso levantó una
piedra como una gran muela de molino
y la arrojó al mar diciendo:
–Con tal ímpetu será arrojada Babilonia,
la gran ciudad, y ya nunca más
se la encontrará. 22 La música de los citaristas
y de los cantores, de los flautistas
y la de los que tocan la trompeta ya
no se oirá más en ti. Ningún artesano de
ningún oficio se encontrará en ti jamás,
ni el rumor de la muela del molino se
oirá nunca en ti. 23 No lucirá jamás en ti
la luz de la lámpara, ni se oirá ya más la
voz del esposo y de la esposa, porque tus
mercaderes eran los magnates de la tierra,
y todas las gentes se extraviaron con
tus hechicerías. 24 Y en ella se encontró
la sangre de los profetas y de los santos,
y de todos los inmolados en la tierra.

Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy

Este capítulo describe una antigua ciudad de pecado, Babilonia, de la que "todas las naciones han bebido el vino de sus pasiones impuras". (v.3) Además, habla de todas las mercancías que se comerciaban en esa ciudad de pecado, incluso " ...esclavos, es decir, almas humanas". (v.13) Piensa en las formas en que varios pecados en tu vida te están convirtiendo en un esclavo: la amargura, el resentimiento, la falta de perdón, la lujuria, la charla ociosa. ¿Eres como los reyes y mercaderes en este capítulo que se afligen al ver la fuente de tu pecado destruida, o eres como los santos que son amonestados a "Alegrarse" (v.20) porque "Dios ha dado juicio por ti" (v.20) contra esa fuente de pecado? Pídele al Espíritu Santo que te ayude a desechar la esclavitud del pecado y a tomar en su lugar la condición de hijo o hija de Dios.
