Rite of Election

Chrism Mass
May 27, 2027 (Holy Thursday) – Chrism Mass

On Holy Thursday morning priests, deacons, and representatives from the parishes of the diocese will join Bishop Boyea at the Chrism Mass.

During the Mass Bishop Boyea will consecrate the holy oils: the Oil of the Sick; the Oil of Catechumens (converts to the Catholic faith); and the Sacred Chrism used for anointing during the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Holy orders (ordination of priests).

After the Chrism Mass, the oils will be made available to the parish representatives who will take them back to their parishes for use during the Easter Vigil and throughout the year.
Easter Vigil
May 27, 2027 (Saturday) – The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night
- The “entire celebration of the Easter Vigil takes place at night”; based on local twilight, the 2026 Easter Vigil should not begin before 9:00 pm
- “‘The entire celebration of the Easter Vigil takes place at night. It should not begin before nightfall; it should end before daybreak on Sunday.’ This rule is to be taken according to its strictest sense.”

- After the time of sunset is ascertained, “another 45 minutes or one hour should be added to that time in order to determine the approximate time of nightfall.”

Mandatory Use of Anointing of the Sick Ritual Book
May 28, 2027 – Easter Sunday
- Mandatory use of the Order of the Anointing of the Sick and of Their Pastoral Care is required.
Catechumens – Rite for Entrance Into the Catechumenate
May 16, 2027 (Sunday) – Pentecost Sunday
- Unbaptized adults should celebrate the Rite for Entrance into the Catechumenate before this date so as to be a catechumen from “at least the Easter time of one year until the beginning of the Easter Time of the next year” (Nation Statutes, Norm 4).
