St Mary Charlotte scores big on the National MEAN

Father David Rosenberg, pastor of St. Mary Parish in Charlotte, is thrilled with the results for the Nation MEAN RIT scores in math, reading, language and science. Father Rosenberg and Principal Mandy Wildern, who both started at the school last year, felt the students could improve their scores.St. Mary has 72 students, grades K-6. Grades 2-6 were tested. Father Rosenberg said the children scored in the top percentile nationally in math, reading, language and science in all grades – out of 5.1 million students from 13,000 schools – with more than 2,700 school districts in all 50 states participating.
Wildern said, “The Lansing Diocese is requiring its schools to be part of the Northwest Evaluation Association. This is an additional tool to use. I look at data all the time.” She added that she is impressed with the teachers and parents who partner together. The test gives teachers the opportunity to work with students and to set goals. Father Rosenberg stated, “Where is your focus? … The children should be the focus."
The parish has 600 families … 80 more families have become parishioners since Father Rosenberg became pastor.  And he has also started the Kids of the Cross program at the parish. This program enables the children to help the parish. They pray, they do corporal works; they assist the Knights of Columbus and others. It allows the children not only to be more active in their parish but to feel that they can make an important difference.
