The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Jackson County is the first RSVP to be established in Michigan. The 40 year-old nonprofit organization has compiled a cookbook with recipes from its volunteers. The cookbook is a fundraiser with the profits to be used for its volunteer programs, which last year included transportation for 45 veterans to 462 medical appointments, traveling 11,099 miles. Also, transportation for senior citizens included 2,274 trips, 1,655 volunteer hours and 39,866 miles. Seniors must be 60 years old and volunteers must be 55 years old.
Some of the recipes in the RSVP cookbook include: fruit salsa, cheeseburger soup, guess again salad, zippy potatoes, Scottish eggs and millionaire pie. Of course, the best recipe is the RSVP volunteer. Ingredients include: kindness, love, sincerity, enthusiasm, perseverance and a good sense of humor.
To order the $10 cookbook or to volunteer to drive senior citizens to medical appointment, please contact Catholic Charities of Jackson at 517.782.4616.
