Today is the Feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian who, according to tradition, were twin brothers and also medical doctors. Together, they suffered martyrdom in early 4th century Syria during the Roman persecution of the Emperor Diocletian.
Providentially, the Diocese of Lansing is blessed with twin brothers who are also priests. Father Gary Koenigsknecht is the pastor of Saint Joseph in Howell while Father Todd Koenigsknecht is the pastor of Sacred Heart & St. Mary on the Lake Manitou Beach. The two are pictured above. Father Todd on the left. Father Gary on the right. As it happens, their younger brother, Father Randy Koenigsknecht, was ordained this year and is now Parochial Vicar of Saint John the Evangelists in Jackson.
So what does today's feast day of martyred twins mean to the priestly twins of this diocese? Fathers Gary and Todd write:
The world is always watching to see how our words and actions point to Christ. We are all teachers, be it for good or for ill! We first discovered these twin saints during our studies in Rome while visiting their patronal Church in the Roman Forum. The people of the Roman Empire discovered these twin saints after Cosmas and Damian began offering their medical services for free, bringing many to faith! Their witness teaches us that Jesus will use everything, particularly our gifts and talents, if we lay them at His disposal. While we have little experience with medicine, it is inspiring for us as twin priests to see how Saints Cosmas and Damian were striving together for a life of holiness.
You cannot help but wonder as we celebrate their feast about the conversations they shared to live with such radical generosity. How often did they encourage each other to trust in Christ when resources were tight or persecution was mounting? What strength they must have given each other as they approached the martyr’s crown! Like those holy brothers encouraged and convicted each other, we are grateful for the gift of our brotherhood in blood and in Christ. May we all live generously the call Jesus places in our life and never forget the encouragement we are meant to provide one another.
Saints Cosmas and Damian, pray for us!
