According to the 2015 Kids Count, the number of children ages 0-17 investigated for suspected abuse in Jackson County has increased an alarming 71% from 3,402 in 2011 to 5,813 in 2014. Jackson County is in the top 10 counties of confirmed child abuse cases of the 83 counties in Michigan. The JCCAC impacts the Jackson community in a very positive manner by helping child abuse investigators across all disciplines provide a more comprehensive and coordinated response. In 2015, more than 200 children were interviewed at the Jackson County Child Advocacy Center. Approximately 90% of these cases involved allegations of sexual abuse. A child-friendly setting, the center provides children and their caregivers a safe place to get the services they need to begin the healing process. The JCCAC provides forensic interviews to children ages 3-18. These interviews, conducted by highly-trained interviewers, ensure that children are able to tell their story without being led or influenced by an adult. Often, this is the only time a child has felt safe enough to tell what has happened to them. Crisis counseling is provided to non-offending care givers on-sight and referrals are made for long term healing and support. JCCAC also provides free training about sexual abuse prevention and identifying perpetrator behaviors to parent groups, community groups and organizations that work with children, helping to provide a safer community for all.
