**Bible Commentary:
The discourse, or sermon, on the mount takes up three full chapters of St Matthew’s Gospel—chapters 5–7. It is the first of the five great discourses of Jesus which appear in this Gospel and contains a considerable amount of our Lord’s teaching.
It is difficult to reduce [the Sermon on the Mount] to one single theme, but the various teachings it contains could be said to deal with these five points: 1) the attitude a person must have for entering the Kingdom of heaven (the Beatitudes, the salt of the earth, the light of the world, Jesus and his teaching, the fullness of the Law); 2) uprightness of intention in religious practices (here the Our Father would be included); 3) trust in God’s fatherly providence; 4) how God’s children should behave towards one another (not judging one’s neighbour, respect for holy things, the effectiveness of prayer and the golden rule of charity); 5) the conditions for entering the Kingdom (the narrow gate, false prophets, and building on rock).
Concerning Almsgiving
1 “Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
2 “Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. 3 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Concerning Prayer
5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
7 “And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this:
Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread;
12 And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
13 And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; 15 but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Concerning Fasting
16 “And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Concerning Treasures
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
The Sound Eye
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light; 23 but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
Serving Two Masters
24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
Do Not Be Anxious
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.
34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day’s own trouble be sufficient for the day.

1 Guardaos de hacer vuestra justicia
delante de los hombres con el fin de
que os vean; de otro modo no tendréis recompensa
de vuestro Padre que está en los
cielos.
2 Por lo tanto, cuando des limosna
no lo vayas pregonando, como hacen
los hipócritas en las sinagogas y en las
calles, con el fin de que los alaben los
hombres. En verdad os digo que ya recibieron
su recompensa. 3 Tú, por el contrario,
cuando des limosna, que tu mano
izquierda no sepa lo que hace tu mano
derecha, 4 para que tu limosna quede en
lo oculto; de este modo, tu Padre, que ve
en lo oculto, te recompensará.
5 Cuando oréis, no seáis como los
hipócritas, que son amigos de orar
puestos de pie en las sinagogas y en las
esquinas de las plazas, para exhibirse
delante de los hombres; en verdad os
digo que ya recibieron su recompensa.
6 Tú, por el contrario, cuando te pongas
a orar, entra en tu aposento y, con
la puerta cerrada, ora a tu Padre, que
está en lo oculto; y tu Padre, que ve en
lo oculto, te recompensará. 7 Y al orar
no empleéis muchas palabras como los
gentiles, que piensan que por su locuacidad
van a ser escuchados. 8 Así pues,
no seáis como ellos, porque bien sabe
vuestro Padre de qué tenéis necesidad
antes de que se lo pidáis. 9 Vosotros, en
cambio, orad así:
Padre nuestro, que estás en los cielos,
santificado sea tu Nombre;
10 venga tu Reino;
hágase tu voluntad,
como en el cielo, también en la tierra;
11 danos hoy nuestro pan cotidiano;
12 y perdónanos nuestras deudas,
como también nosotros perdonamos
a nuestros deudores;
13 y no nos pongas en tentación,
sino líbranos del mal.
14 Porque si les perdonáis a los
hombres sus ofensas, también os perdonará
vuestro Padre celestial. 15 Pero
si no perdonáis a los hombres, tampoco
vuestro Padre os perdonará vuestros
pecados.
16 Cuando ayunéis no os finjáis tristes
como los hipócritas, que desfiguran
su rostro para que los hombres noten
que ayunan. En verdad os digo que ya
recibieron su recompensa. 17 Tú, en cambio,
cuando ayunes, perfuma tu cabeza
y lávate la cara, 18 para que no adviertan
los hombres que ayunas, sino tu Padre,
que está en lo oculto; y tu Padre, que ve
19 No amontonéis tesoros en la tierra,
donde la polilla y la herrumbre los corroen
y donde los ladrones socavan y los
roban. 20 Amontonad en cambio tesoros en
el cielo, donde ni la polilla ni la herrumbre
corroen, y donde los ladrones no socavan
ni roban. 21 Porque donde está tu tesoro allí
estará tu corazón.
22 La lámpara del cuerpo es el ojo.
Por eso, si tu ojo es sencillo, todo tu
cuerpo estará iluminado. 23 Pero si tu
ojo es malicioso, todo tu cuerpo estará
en tinieblas. Y si la luz que hay en ti es
tinieblas, ¡qué grande será la oscuridad!
24 Nadie puede servir a dos señores,
porque o tendrá odio a uno y amor al
otro, o prestará su adhesión al primero
y menospreciará al segundo: no podéis
servir a Dios y a las riquezas.
25 Por eso os digo: no estéis preocupados
por vuestra vida: qué vais a comer;
o por vuestro cuerpo: con qué os
vais a vestir. ¿Es que no vale más la vida
que el alimento, y el cuerpo más que el
vestido? 26 Mirad las aves del cielo: no
siembran, ni siegan, ni almacenan en
graneros, y vuestro Padre celestial las
alimenta. ¿Es que no valéis vosotros
mucho más que ellas? 27 ¿Quién de vosotros,
por mucho que cavile, puede añadir
un solo codo a su estatura? 28 Y sobre
el vestir, ¿por qué os preocupáis? Fijaos
en los lirios del campo, cómo crecen; no
se fatigan ni hilan, 29 y yo os digo que ni
Salomón en toda su gloria pudo vestirse
como uno de ellos. 30 Y si a la hierba
del campo, que hoy es y mañana se echa
al horno, Dios la viste así, ¿cuánto más
a vosotros, hombres de poca fe? 31 Así
pues, no andéis preocupados diciendo:
¿qué vamos a comer, qué vamos a beber,
con qué nos vamos a vestir? 32 Por
todas esas cosas se afanan los paganos.
Bien sabe vuestro Padre celestial que de
todo eso estáis necesitados.
33 Buscad primero el Reino de Dios
y su justicia, y todas estas cosas se os
añadirán. 34 Por tanto, no os preocupéis
por el mañana, porque el mañana traerá
su propia preocupación. A cada día le
basta su contrariedad.
