Commentary on the Gospel of St. Matthew Chapter 26:
Having concluded “all” of his teachings (vs. 1), Jesus introduces what is to happen, making another prediction of his crucifixion through the lens of the Jewish feast of Passover (vs. 2). While the chief priests and elders are gathered in Jerusalem plotting (vs. 3-4), Jesus is just outside of Jerusalem, in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper (vs. 6-13). Here a woman lavishly expends her resources on Jesus in an anointing, immediately followed by Judas accepting his payment for handing over Jesus (vs. 12-14). Matthew then continues with Jesus leading the celebration of the Passover, as the head-of-household would (vs. 20-29). After the meal, back on the Mount of Olives, Jesus speaks to Peter directly (vs. 34, and again in the garden, vs 40) as he had done earlier to Judas (vs. 23-25). Matthew highlights the parallel tracks of Peter and Judas, who both turn away from Jesus in this chapter. Late at night, in the garden of Gethsemane, we see Jesus at prayer, echoing the themes of the “Our Father” (6:9-15), which Jesus will embody in his obedience to God’s will--choosing to embrace his arrest not as a helpless victim, but as the fulfillment of Israel’s Scriptures (vs. 54, 56). At a gathering of the Temple leaders, Jesus is asked (in words reminiscent of Peter’s confession of faith in 16:16) if he is the Messiah, the Son of God (vs. 63) and charged with blasphemy

The Conspiracy to Kill Jesus
1 When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, 2 You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of man will be delivered up to be crucified.”
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 4 and took counsel together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. 5 But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be a tumult among the people.”
The Anointing at Bethany
6 Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, 7 a woman came up to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head, as he sat at table. 8 But when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? 9 For this ointment might have been sold for a large sum, and given to the poor.” 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. 12 In pouring this ointment on my body she has done it to prepare me for burial. 13 Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
14 Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.
The Passover with the Disciples
17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He said, “Go into the city to such a one, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.
20 When it was evening, he sat at table with the twelve disciples; 21 and as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they were very sorrowful, and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” 23 He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me, will betray me. 24 The Son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Judas, who betrayed him, said, “Is it I, Master?” He said to him, “You have said so.”
The Institution of the Last Supper
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a chalice, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you; 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I shall not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
Peter’s Denial Foretold
30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night; for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.” 33 Peter declared to him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” 34 Jesus said to him, “Truly, I say to you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” 35 Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And so said all the disciples.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, “My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” 43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”
The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
47 While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the Twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I shall kiss is the man; seize him.” 49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Hail, Master!” And he kissed him. 50 Jesus said to him, “Friend, why are you here?” Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. 51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest, and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” 55 At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. 56 But all this has taken place, that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
Jesus before the High Priest
57 Then those who had seized Jesus led him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with the guards to see the end. 59 Now the chief priests and the whole council sought false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, 60 but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward 61 and said, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.’ ” 62 And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?” 63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, hereafter you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest tore his robes, and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. Why do we still need witnesses? You have now heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your judgment?” They answered, “He deserves death.” 67 Then they spat in his face, and struck him; and some slapped him, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you?”
Peter Denies Jesus
69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. And a maid came up to him, and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you mean.” 71 And when he went out to the porch, another maid saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.” 73 After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you are also one of them, for your accent betrays you.” 74 Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the cock crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, “Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

Cuando terminó Jesús todos estos discursos, les dijo a sus discípulos:
Sabéis que dentro de dos días será la Pascua, y el Hijo del Hombre será entregado para que lo crucifiquen.
Entonces se reunieron los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo en el palacio del sumo sacerdote, que se llamaba Caifás, y acordaron apoderarse de Jesús con engaño y darle muerte.
Pero decían: Que no sea durante la fiesta, para que no se produzca alboroto entre el pueblo.
Unción de Betania y traición de Judas Iscariote
Se encontraba Jesús en Betania, en casa de Simón el leproso, cuando se acercó a él una mujer que llevaba un frasco de alabastro con perfume de gran valor y, mientras estaba recostado a la mesa, se lo derramó por la cabeza. Al ver esto los discípulos se indignaron y dijeron: ¿A qué viene este despilfarro? Se podía haber vendido por mucho dinero y darlo a los pobres.
Pero Jesús, que se dió cuenta, les dijo: ¿Por qué molestáis a esta mujer? Ha hecho una obra buena conmigo, plorque a los pobres los tenéis siempre con vosotros, pero a mí no siempre me tenéis. Al derramar ela sobre mi cuerpo este perfume, lo ha hecho para preparar mi sepultura. En verdad os digo: donde quiera que se predique este Evangelio, en todo el mundo, también lo que ella ha hecho se contará en memoria suya.
Entonces, uno de los doce, el que se llamaba Judas Iscariote, fue donde los príncipes de los sacerdotes a decirles: ¿Qué me queréis dar a cambio de que os lo entregue? Ellos le ofrecieron treinta monedas de plata. Desde entonces buscaba la ocasión propicia para entregárselo.
Preparación de la Última Cena y Anuncio de la traición de Judas
El primer día de los Ácimos se acercaron los discípulos a Jesús y le dijeron: ¿Dónde quieres que te preparemos la cena de Pascua?
Jesús respondió:
Ir a la ciudad a casa de tal persona, y comunicadle: "El Maestro dice: "Mi tiempo está cerca; voy a celebrar en tu casa la Pascua con mis discípulos". Los discípulos hicierion tal y como les había mandado Jesús, y prepararon la Pascua. Al anochecer se recostó a la mesa con los doce. Y cuado estaban cenando, dijo:
En verdad os digo que uno de vosotros me va a entregar.Y, muy entristecidos, comenzaron a decirle cada uno: ¿Acaso soy yo, Señor? Pero él repondió: El que moja la mano conmigo en el plato, ese me va a entregar. Ciertamente le Hijo del Hombre se va, según está escrito sobre él; pero ¡ay de aquel hombre por quien es entregado el Hijo del Hombre! Más le valdría a ese hombre o haber nacido.
Tomando la palabra Judas, el que iba a entregarlo, dijo: ¿Acaso soy yo Rabbí?
Tú lo has dicho, le respondió
Institución de la Sagrada Eucaristía
Mientras cenaban, Jesús tomó pan y, despues de pronunciar la bendición, lo partió y se lo dió a sus discípulos y dijo: Tomad y comed, esto es mi cuerpo. Y tomando el cáliz y habiendo dado gracias, se lo dió diciendo: Bebed todos de él; porque esta es mi sangre de la nueva alianza, que es derramada por muchos para remisión de los pecados. Os aseguro que desde ahora no beberé de ese fruto de la vid hasta aquél día en que lo beba con vosotros de nuevo, en el Reino de mi Padre.
Predicción del abandono de sus discípulos
Después de recitar el himno, salieron hacia el Monte de los Olivos. Entonces les dijo Jesús:
Todos vosotros os escandalizaréis esta noche por mi causa, pues escrito está: Heriré al pastor y se dispersarán las ovejas del rebaño.
Pero, después de que haya resucitado iré, iré delante de vosotros a Galilea. Pedro le respondió: Aunque todos se escandalicen por tu causa, yo nunca me escandalizaré. Jesús le replicó:
En verdad te digo que esta misma noche, antes de que cante el gallo, me habrás negado tres veces.
Pedro contestó: Aunque tenga que morir contigo, jamás te negaré. Todos los discípulos dijeron lo mismo.
Oración y agonía de Jesús en el huerto
Entonces llega Jesús con ellos a un lugar llamado Getsemaní, y les dice a los discípulos: Sentaos aquí mientras me voy a orar. Y se llevó a Pedro y a los dis hijos de Zebedeo, y comenzó a entristecerse y a sentir angustia. Entonces les dice: Mi alma está triste hasta muerte. Quedaos aquí y velad conmigo.
Y adelantándose un poco, se postró rostro en tierra mientras oraba diciendo: Padre mío, si es posible, aleja de mí este caliz; pero que no sea tal como yo quiero, sino como tú quieres. Vuelve junto a sus discípulos y los encuentra dormidos; entonces le dice Pedro: ¿Ni siquiera habéis sido capaces de velar una hora conmigo? Velad y orad para no caer en la tentación; el espíritu está pronto, pero la carne es débil.
De nuevo se apartó, por segunda vez, y oró diciendo: Padre mío, si no es posible que esto pase sin que yo lo beba, hágase tu voluntad. al volver los encontró dormidos, pues sus ojos estaban cargados de sueño. Y, dejándolos, se apartó una vez más, y oró por tercera vez repitiendo las mismas palabras. Finalmente, va junto a sis discípulos y les dice: Ya podéis dormir y descansar...MIrad, ha llegado la hora, y el Hijo del Hombre va a ser entregado en manos de los pecadores. levantaos, vamos; ya llega el que me va a entregar.
Prendimiento de Jesús
Todavía estaba hablando, cuando llegó Judas, uno de los doce, acompañado de un gran tropel de gente con espadas y palos, enviados por los discípulos de los sacerdotes y por los ancianos del pueblo. El que lo entregó les había dado esta señal: "Al que yo bese, ese es: prendedlo" Y enseguida se acercó a Jesús y le dijo:
Salve, Rabbí, y le besó.
Pero Jesús le dijo: Amigo, ¡haz lo que has venido a hacer! Entonces se acercaron, hecharon mano a Jesús y lo apresaron. De pronto, uno de los que estaban con Jesús se llevó la mano a la espada, la desenvainó, e hirió al criado del sumo sacerdote, cortándole la oreja. Entonces le dijo Jesús: Vuelve tu espada a su sitio, porque todos los que recurren a al espada, a espada perecerán. ¿O piensas que no puedo acudir a mi Padre y al instante pondría a mi disposición más de doce legiones de ángeles? Entonces ¿cómo se van a cumplir las Escrituras, según las cuales tiene que suceder así?
En aquél momento le dijo Jesús a la gente: ¿Cómo contra un ladrón habéis salido con espadas y palos a aprenderme? Todos los días me sentaba a enseñar en el Templo, y no me prendisteis. Todo esto sucedió para que se cumplieran las escrituras de los Profetas.
Entonces todos los dicípulos lo abandonaron y huyeron.
Interrogatorio ante los príncipes de los sacerdotes
Los que habían prendido a Jesús le condujeron a casa de Caifás, el sumo sacerdote, donde se habían reunido los escribas y los ancianos. Pedro, por su parte, lo seguía de lejos hasta el palacio del sumo sacerdote; y, una vez dentro, se sentó con los sirvientes para ver el desenlace. Los príncipes de los sacerdotes y todo el sanedrín buscaban un falso testimonio contra Jesús para darle muerte; pero no lo encontraron a pesar de los muchos falsos testigos presentados. Por último, se presentaron dos que declararon: Este ha dicho "Yo puedo destruír el Templo de Dios y edificarlo de nuevo en tres días".
Y el sumo sacerdote se puso de pie para decirle: ¿No respondes nada? ¿Qué es lo que estos testifican contra ti? Pero Jesús permanecía en silencio. Entonces el sumo sacerdote le dijo: Te conjuro por Dios vivo que nos digas si tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios.
Tú lo has dicho, le respondió Jesús. Además os digo que en adelante veréis al Hijo del Hombre sentado a la diestra del Poder y venir sobre las nubes del cielo. Entonces el sumo sacerdote se rasgó las vestiduras diciendo: ¡Ha blasfemado! ¿Qué necesidad tenemos ya de testigos? Ya lo veis, acabáis de oíor la blasfemia. ¿Qué os parece?
Es reo de muerte, respondierone llos. Entonces comenzaron a escupirle en la cara y a darle bofetadas. Los que le abofeteaban decían: Profetízanos, Cristo, ¿quién es el que te ha pegado?
Las negaciones de Pedro
Pedro estaba sentado fuera, en el atrio; se el acercó una sirvienta y le dijo: Tú también estabas con Jesús el Galileo. Peero el lo negó delante de todos: Al salir al portal le vió otra, y les dijo a los que estaban allí: Este estaba con Jesús el Nazareno. De nuevo lo negó con juramento: No conozco a ese hombre. Un poco después se aceraron los que estaban allí y le dijeron a Pedro: Desde luego tú también eres de ellos, porque tu acento lo manifiesta. Entonces empezó a imprecar y a jurar: ¡No conozco a ese hombre! Y al momento cantó un gallo. Y Pedro se acordó de las palabras que Jesús le había dicho: "Antes de que cante el gallo, me habrás negado tres veces". Y saliío afuera y lloró amargamente.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
"Padre mío, si no es posible que esto pase sin que yo lo beba, hágase tu voluntad" (v. 39) Señor, ¿cómo se sientió decir sí a la voluntad del Padre, cando estabas siendo llamado a dar tu vida en la Cruz?
