Commentary on the Gospel According to St. Mark, Chapter 4:
Jesus begins teaching a large crowd from a boat on the Sea of Galilee. He taught them “many things in parables” (vs. 2), and afterward the Twelve and some other close disciples asked Jesus about the parables (vs. 10). Jesus interprets the parables for them (vs. 11-20), and goes to teach more using images and parables (vs. 21-32). A unifying theme is the importance of seeking to grow--that life in the Kingdom is not meant to be without effort, a disciple is not called to stagnate. That evening, Jesus and the disciples cross the Sea of Galilee, an opportunity for the authority Jesus wields over the spiritual realm (1:25) to be manifest in the created realm (vs. 39).

The Parable of the Sower
1 Again he began to teach be side the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea; and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land. 2 And he taught them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: 3 “Lis ten! A sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it had not much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil; 6 and when the sun rose it was scorched, and since it had no root it withered away. 7 Other seed fell among thorns and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. 8 And other seeds fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixty fold and a hundredfold.” 9 And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
Explanation of the Parable
10 And when he was alone, those who were about him with the Twelve asked him concerning the parables. 11 And he said to them, “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables; 12 so that they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand; lest they should turn again, and be forgiven.” 13 And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14 The sower sows the word. 15 And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown; when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word which is sown in them. 16 And these in like manner are the ones sown upon rocky ground, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy; 17 and they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. 18 And others are the ones sown among thorns; they are those who hear the word, 19 but the cares of the world, and the delight in riches, and the desire for other things, enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 20 But those that were sown upon the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.”
A Lamp Is Not Hidden
21 And he said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a bushel, or under a bed, and not on a stand? 22 For there is nothing hidden, except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret, except to come to light. 23 If any man has ears to hear, let him hear.” 24 And he said to them, “Take heed what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. 25 For to him who has will more be given; and from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”
A Parable about Seeds
26 And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed upon the ground, 27 and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he knows not how. 28 The earth produces of itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
30 And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”
The Use of Parables
33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; 34 he did not speak to them without a par able, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.
Jesus Calms a Storm on the Sea
35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them, just as he was, in the boat. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great storm of wind arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care if we perish?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?” 41 And they were filled with awe, and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?”

1 De nuevo comenzó a enseñar al lado
del mar. Y se reunió en torno a él una
muchedumbre tan grande, que tuvo que
subir a sentarse en una barca, en el mar,
mientras toda la muchedumbre permanecía
en tierra, en la orilla. 2 Les explicaba con
parábolas muchas cosas, y les decía en su
enseñanza:
3 –Escuchad: salió el sembrador a
sembrar. 4 Y ocurrió que, al echar la semilla,
parte cayó junto al camino, y vinieron
los pájaros y se la comieron. 5 Parte
cayó en terreno pedregoso, donde no
había mucha tierra, y brotó pronto, por
no ser hondo el suelo; 6 pero cuando salió
el sol se agostó, y se secó porque no tenía raíz. 7 Otra parte cayó entre espinos;
crecieron los espinos y la ahogaron, y no
dio fruto. 8 Y otra cayó en tierra buena, y
comenzó a dar fruto: crecía y se desarrollaba;
y producía el treinta por uno, el sesenta
por uno y el ciento por uno.
9 Y decía:
–El que tenga oídos para oír, que
oiga.
10 Y cuando se quedó solo, los que le
acompañaban junto con los doce le preguntaron
por el significado de las parábolas.
11 Y les decía:
–A vosotros se os ha concedido el
misterio del Reino de Dios; en cambio,
a los que están fuera todo se les anuncia
con parábolas,
12 de modo que los que miran miren
y no vean,
y los que oyen oigan pero no entiendan,
no sea que se conviertan y se les perdone.
13 Y les dice:
–¿No entendéis esta parábola? ¿Y
cómo podréis entender las demás parábolas?
14 El que siembra, siembra la palabra.
15 Los que están junto al camino
donde se siembra la palabra son aquellos
que, en cuanto la oyen, al instante
viene Satanás y se lleva la palabra sembrada
en ellos. 16 Los que reciben la semilla
sobre terreno pedregoso son aquellos
que, cuando oyen la palabra, al momento
la reciben con alegría, 17 pero no tienen
en sí raíz, sino que son inconstantes;
y después, al venir una tribulación
o persecución por causa de la palabra,
enseguida tropiezan y caen. 18 Hay otros
que reciben la semilla entre espinos: son
aquellos que han oído la palabra, 19 pero
las preocupaciones de este mundo, la seducción
de las riquezas y los apetitos de
las demás cosas les asedian, ahogan la
palabra y queda estéril. 20 Y los que han
recibido la semilla sobre la tierra buena
son aquellos que oyen la palabra, la reciben
y dan fruto: el treinta por uno, el sesenta
por uno y el ciento por uno. 21 Y les decía:
–¿Acaso se enciende la lámpara para
ponerla debajo de un celemín o debajo de la
cama? ¿No se pone sobre un candelero?
22 Pues no hay cosa escondida que
no vaya a saberse, ni secreto que no acabe
por hacerse público. 23 Si alguno tiene
oídos para oír, que oiga.
24 Y les decía:
–Prestad atención a lo que oís. Con
la medida con que midáis se os medirá y
hasta se os dará de más. 25 Porque al que
tiene se le dará; y al que no tiene incluso
lo que tiene se le quitará.
26 Y decía:
–El Reino de Dios viene a ser como
un hombre que echa la semilla sobre la
tierra, 27 y, duerma o vele noche y día, la
semilla nace y crece, sin que él sepa cómo.
28 Porque la tierra produce fruto ella sola:
primero hierba, después espiga y por fin
trigo maduro en la espiga. 29 Y en cuanto
está a punto el fruto, enseguida mete la
hoz, porque ha llegado la siega.
30 Y decía:
–¿A qué se parecerá el Reino de
Dios?, o ¿con qué parábola lo compararemos?
31 Es como un grano de mostaza
que, cuando se siembra en la tierra, es la
más pequeña de todas las semillas que
hay en la tierra; 32 pero, una vez sembrado,
crece y llega a hacerse mayor que todas
las hortalizas, y echa ramas grandes,
hasta el punto de que los pájaros del cielo
pueden anidar bajo su sombra.
33 Y con muchas parábolas semejantes
les anunciaba la palabra, conforme a
lo que podían entender; 34 y no les solía
hablar nada sin parábolas. Pero a solas,
les explicaba todo a sus discípulos.
35 Aquel día, llegada la tarde, les dice:
–Crucemos a la otra orilla.
36 Y, despidiendo a la muchedumbre,
le llevaron en la barca tal como estaba.
Y le acompañaban otras barcas. 37 Y se
levantó una gran tempestad de viento,
y las olas se echaban encima de la barca,
hasta el punto de que la barca ya se
inundaba. 38 Él estaba en la popa durmiendo sobre un cabezal. Entonces le
despiertan, y le dicen:
–Maestro, ¿no te importa que perezcamos?
39 Y, puesto en pie, increpó al viento
y dijo al mar:
–¡Calla, enmudece!
Y se calmó el viento y sobrevino una
gran calma. 40 Entonces les dijo:
–¿Por qué os asustáis? ¿Todavía no
tenéis fe?
41 Y se llenaron de gran temor y se
decían unos a otros:
–¿Quién es éste, que hasta el viento
y el mar le obedecen?
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
Jesús enseñó en parábolas, que no todos entendieron, pero "a sus propios discípulos les explicó todo" (v.33). Ora hoy con una de estas parábolas y pídele al Señor que te muestre un significado más profundo del que hayas tenido en el pasado.
