Commentary on the Gospel According to St. Luke, Chapter 3:
Decades have passed and Jesus, true God and true man (2:40, 52; 3:38) and his kinsman, John, are now adults. The “word of God” comes to John as a prophet, who begins to “prepare the way,” fulfilling what the prophet Isaiah had written, specifically that “all flesh” (including Gentiles) would “see the salvation of God” (vs. 2-6). Crowds flock to John as he preaches good news to the people (vs. 18) and he tells them not to assume their religious heritage is an entitlement, but to “bear good fruit,” something even the seemingly irreligious tax collections and soldiers can do (vs. 8-14). After people, including Jesus, were baptized (vs. 21), Jesus experiences a time of intimate connection with God the Father and Holy Spirit in prayer (vs. 22). Luke’s genaology emphasizes Jesus’ importance for all people--He is a descendent of Adam, the Son of God for all humanity (vs. 38).

The Preaching of John the Baptist
1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2 in the highpriesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness; 3 and he went into all the region about the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
5 Every valley shall be filled,
and every mountain and hill shall be brought low,
and the crooked shall be made straight,
and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
6 and all flesh shall see the
salvation of God.”
7 He said therefore to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruits that befit repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 9 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10 And the multitudes asked him, “What then shall we do?” 11 And he answered them, “He who has two coats, let him share with him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.” 12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” 13 And he said to them, “Collect no more than is appointed you.” 14 Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Rob no one by violence or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.”
15 As the people were in expectation, and all men questioned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he were the Christ, 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into his granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
18 So, with many other exhortations, he preached good news to the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, 20 added this to them all, that he shut up John in prison.
The Baptism of Jesus
21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form, as a dove, and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

de la región de Traconítide, y Lisanias tetrarca

Anás y Caifás, vino la palabra de Dios sobre
Juan, el hijo de Zacarías, en el desierto.
3 Y recorrió toda la región del Jordán
predicando un bautismo de penitencia
para remisión de los pecados, 4 tal como
está escrito en el libro de los oráculos
del profeta Isaías:
Voz del que clama en el desierto:
«Preparad el camino del Señor,
haced rectas sus sendas.
5 Todo valle será rellenado,
y todo monte y colina allanados;
los caminos torcidos serán rectos,
y los caminos escarpados serán llanos.
6 Y todo hombre verá la salvación de
Dios».
7 Y decía a las muchedumbres que
acudían para que los bautizara:
–Raza de víboras, ¿quién os ha enseñado
a huir de la ira que va a venir?
8 Dad, por tanto, frutos dignos de penitencia,
y no empecéis a decir entre vosotros:
«Tenemos por padre a Abrahán».
Porque os aseguro que Dios puede hacer
surgir de estas piedras hijos de Abrahán.
9 Además, ya está el hacha puesta
junto a la raíz de los árboles. Por tanto,
todo árbol que no da buen fruto se corta
y se arroja al fuego.
10 Las muchedumbres le preguntaban:
–Entonces, ¿qué debemos hacer?
11 Él les contestaba:
–El que tiene dos túnicas, que le dé
al que no tiene; y el que tiene alimentos,
que haga lo mismo.
12 Llegaron también unos publicanos
para bautizarse y le dijeron:
–Maestro, ¿qué debemos hacer?
13 Y él les contestó:
–No exijáis más de lo que se os ha
señalado.
14 Asimismo le preguntaban los soldados:
–Y nosotros, ¿qué tenemos que hacer?
Y les dijo:
–No hagáis extorsión a nadie, ni denunciéis
con falsedad, y contentaos con
vuestras pagas.
15 Como el pueblo estaba expectante
y todos se preguntaban en su interior si
acaso Juan no sería el Cristo, 16 Juan salió
al paso diciéndoles a todos:
–Yo os bautizo con agua; pero viene
el que es más poderoso que yo, a quien
no soy digno de desatarle la correa de
las sandalias: él os bautizará en el Espíritu
Santo y en fuego. 17 Él tiene el bieldo
en su mano, para limpiar su era y recoger
el trigo en su granero, y quemará la
paja con un fuego que no se apaga.
18 Con estas y otras muchas exhortaciones
anunciaba al pueblo la buena
nueva.
19 Pero el tetrarca Herodes, al ser reprendido
por él a causa de Herodías, la
mujer de su hermano, y por todas las
maldades que había cometido Herodes,
20 añadió esta otra a las demás: metió a
Juan en la cárcel.
21 Se estaba bautizando todo el pueblo.
Y cuando Jesús fue bautizado,
mientras estaba en oración, se abrió el
cielo 22 y bajó el Espíritu Santo sobre él
en forma corporal, como una paloma. Y
se oyó una voz que venía del cielo:
–Tú eres mi Hijo, el Amado, en ti me
he complacido.
Tenía Jesús al comenzar unos treinta
años, y era, según se pensaba, hijo de
José, hijo de Helí,
24 hijo de Matat, hijo de Leví, hijo
de Melquí, hijo de Jannaí, hijo de José,
25 hijo de Matatías, hijo de Amós, hijo
de Naúm, hijo de Eslí, hijo de Nangaí,
26 hijo de Maaz, hijo de Matatías, hijo
de Semeín, hijo de Josec, hijo de Jodá,
27 hijo de Joanán, hijo de Resá, hijo de
Zorobabel, hijo de Salatiel, hijo de Neri,

Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
"Maestro, qué hemos de hacer?" es la pregunta que hacen repetidamente a Juan el Bautista aquéllos condenados por la palabra de Dios pronunciada a través de él. Señor, yo también te pregunto con sinceridad...¿Qué quieres que haga (en alguna área de mi vida)?
