Commentary on the Gospel According to St. Luke, Chapter 11:
Jesus continues his journey to Jerusalem where he will accomplish his “exodus” (9:31), a victory that liberates captives and opens the promised land. Along the way, Jesus teaches his disciples about prayer (vs. 1-13). The source of Jesus’ power and authority is challenged. Jesus replies with the logical response that casting out demons would certainly be an odd way to be on the same side as Evil (vs. 17-19) and that he is actually the “one stronger” than Evil who will rescue ones held captive by sin, gathering God’s family (vs. 21-23). There is no neutral ground, we cannot have an empty “house,” instead each of us is gathering and unifying, “full of light,” or scattering and dividing (vs. 23-26, 33-36). As in 10:13-16, Jesus laments those who are not recognizing his identity and responding to his message (vs. 32), the Pharisees who are hypocrites and resist inner conversion of heart (vs. 37-44) and the scholars of the Torah Law who obscure the meaning of God’s Scripture (vs. 44-52).

The Lord’s Prayer
1 He was praying in a certain place, and when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2 And he said to them, “When you pray, say:
“Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread; 4 and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive every one who is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation.”
Perseverance in Prayer
5 And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; 6 for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything’? 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him any thing because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him whatever he needs. 9 And I tell you, Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Jesus and Be-elzebul
14 Now he was casting out a demon that was mute; when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. 15 But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons”; 16 while others, to test him, sought from him a sign from heaven. 17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and house falls upon house. 18 And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. 19 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. 20 But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace; 22 but when one stronger than he assails him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted, and divides his spoil. 23 He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.
The Return of the Unclean Spirit
24 “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he passes through waterless places seeking rest; and finding none he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when he comes he finds it swept and put in order. 26 Then he goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”
True Blessedness
27 As he said this, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked!” 28 But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
The Sign of Jonah
29 When the crowds were in creasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the men of Nineveh, so will the Son of man be to this generation. 31 The queen of the South will arise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.
The Light of the Body
33 “No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a bushel, but on a stand, that those who enter may see the light. 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is sound, your whole body is full of light; but when it is not sound, your body is full of darkness. 35 Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”
Jesus Denounces the Hypocrisy of the Pharisees and Lawyers
37 While he was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him; so he went in and sat at table. 38 The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner. 39 And the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but in side you are full of extortion and wickedness. 40 You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But give for alms those things which are within; and behold, everything is clean for you.
42 “But woe to you Pharisees! for you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God; these you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! for you love the best seat in the synagogues and salutations in the market places. 44 Woe to you! for you are like graves which are not seen, and men walk over them without knowing it.”
45 One of the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying this you reproach us also.” 46 And he said, “Woe to you lawyers also! for you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you your selves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 Woe to you! for you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. 48 So you are witnesses and consent to the deeds of your fathers; for they killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 There fore also the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’ 50 that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it shall be required of this generation. Woe to you lawyers! for you have taken away the key of knowledge; you did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”
53 As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard, and to provoke him to speak of many things, 54 lying in wait for him, 52 to catch him in something he might say.

"Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”" (Lk 11: 35-36). Estaba haciendo oración en
cierto lugar. Y cuando terminó,
le dijo uno de sus discípulos:
–Señor, enséñanos a orar, como
Juan enseñó a sus discípulos.
2 Él les respondió:
–Cuando oréis, decid:
Padre,
santificado sea tu Nombre,
venga tu Reino;
3 sigue dándonos cada día nuestro
pan cotidiano;
4 y perdónanos nuestros pecados,
puesto que también nosotros perdonamos
a todo el que nos debe;
y no nos pongas en tentación.
5 Y les dijo:
–¿Quién de vosotros que tenga un
amigo y acuda a él a medianoche y le
diga: «Amigo, préstame tres panes,
6 porque un amigo mío me ha llegado de
viaje y no tengo qué ofrecerle», 7 le responderá
desde dentro: «No me molestes,
ya está cerrada la puerta; los míos y
yo estamos acostados; no puedo levantarme
a dártelos»? 8 Os digo que, si no se
levanta a dárselos por ser su amigo, al
menos por su impertinencia se levantará
para darle cuanto necesite.
9 »Así pues, yo os digo: pedid y se os
dará; buscad y encontraréis; llamad y se
os abrirá; 10 porque todo el que pide, re
cibe; y el que busca, encuentra; y al que
llama, se le abrirá.
11 »¿Qué padre de entre vosotros, si
un hijo suyo le pide un pez, en lugar
de un pez le da una serpiente? 12 ¿O si
le pide un huevo, le da un escorpión?
13 Pues si vosotros, siendo malos, sabéis
dar a vuestros hijos cosas buenas,
¿cuánto más el Padre del cielo dará el
Espíritu Santo a los que se lo pidan?
14 Estaba expulsando un demonio que
era mudo. Y cuando salió el demonio,
habló el mudo y la multitud se quedó admirada;
15 pero algunos de ellos dijeron:
–Expulsa los demonios por Beelzebul,
el príncipe de los demonios.
16 Y otros, para tentarle, le pedían
una señal del cielo. 17 Pero él, que conocía
sus pensamientos, les replicó:
–Todo reino dividido contra sí mismo
queda desolado y cae casa contra
casa. 18 Si también Satanás está dividido
contra sí mismo, ¿cómo se sostendrá su
reino? Puesto que decís que expulso los
demonios por Beelzebul. 19 Si yo expulso
los demonios por Beelzebul, vuestros
hijos ¿por quién los expulsan? Por
eso, ellos mismos serán vuestros jueces.
20 Pero si yo expulso los demonios por el
dedo de Dios, es que el Reino de Dios
ha llegado a vosotros.
21 »Cuando uno que es fuerte y está
bien armado custodia su palacio, sus
bienes están seguros; 22 pero si llega otro
más fuerte y le vence, le quita las armas
en las que confiaba y reparte su botín.
23 »El que no está conmigo está contra
mí, y el que no recoge conmigo, desparrama.
24 »Cuando el espíritu impuro ha salido
de un hombre, vaga por lugares áridos
en busca de descanso, pero al no
encontrarlo dice: «Me volveré a mi casa,
de donde salí». 25 Y al llegar la encuentra
bien barrida y en orden. 26 Entonces va,
toma otros siete espíritus peores que él,
y entrando se instalan allí, con lo que la
situación última de aquel hombre resulta
peor que la primera.
27 Mientras él estaba diciendo todo
esto, una mujer de en medio de la multitud,
alzando la voz, le dijo:
–Bienaventurado el vientre que te
llevó y los pechos que te criaron.
28 Pero él replicó:
–Bienaventurados más bien los que
escuchan la palabra de Dios y la guardan.
29 Habiéndose reunido una gran muchedumbre,
comenzó a decir:
–Esta generación es una generación
perversa; busca una señal y no se le dará
otra señal que la de Jonás. 30 Porque, así
como Jonás fue señal para los habitantes
de Nínive, del mismo modo lo será
también el Hijo del Hombre para esta
generación. 31 La reina del Sur se levantará
en el Juicio contra los hombres de
esta generación y los condenará: porque
vino de los confines de la tierra para oír
la sabiduría de Salomón, y daos cuenta
de que aquí hay algo más que Salomón.
32 Los hombres de Nínive se levantarán
en el Juicio contra esta generación y la
condenarán: porque ellos se convirtieron
ante la predicación de Jonás, y daos
cuenta de que aquí hay algo más que Jonás.
33 »Nadie que ha encendido una lámpara
la pone en un sitio oculto ni debajo
de un celemín, sino sobre un candelero,
para que los que entren vean la luz. 34 La
lámpara del cuerpo es tu ojo. Cuando tu
ojo es sencillo, todo tu cuerpo también
está iluminado. Pero cuando tu ojo es
malicioso, también tu cuerpo queda en
tinieblas. 35 Mira, por tanto, no sea que
la luz que hay en ti sea tinieblas. 36 Y si
todo tu cuerpo está iluminado, sin que
haya en él parte alguna oscura, todo él
estará iluminado como cuando la lámpara
te ilumina con su resplandor.
37 Cuando terminó de hablar, cierto
fariseo le rogó que comiera en su
casa. Entró y se puso a la mesa. 38 El fariseo
se quedó extrañado al ver que Jesús no se
había lavado antes de la comida. 39 Pero el
Señor le dijo:
–Así que vosotros, los fariseos, limpiáis
por fuera la copa y el plato, pero
vuestro interior está lleno de rapiña y
de maldad. 40 ¡Insensatos! ¿Acaso quien
hizo lo de fuera no ha hecho también lo
de dentro? 41 Dad, más bien, limosna de
lo que guardáis dentro, y así todo será
puro para vosotros. 42 Pero, ¡ay de vosotros,
fariseos, que pagáis el diezmo de
la menta, de la ruda y de todas las legumbres,
pero despreciáis la justicia y el
amor de Dios! ¡Hay que hacer esto sin
descuidar lo otro!
43 »¡Ay de vosotros, fariseos, porque
apetecéis los primeros asientos en las sinagogas
y que os saluden en las plazas!
44 »¡Ay de vosotros, que sois como
sepulcros disimulados, sobre los que
pasan los hombres sin saberlo!
45 Entonces, cierto doctor de la Ley,
tomando la palabra, le replica:
–Maestro, diciendo tales cosas nos
ofendes también a nosotros.
46 Pero él dijo:
–¡Ay también de vosotros, los doctores
de la Ley, porque imponéis a los
hombres cargas insoportables, pero vosotros ni con uno de vuestros dedos las
tocáis!
47 »¡Ay de vosotros, que edificáis los
sepulcros de los profetas, después que
vuestros padres los mataron! 48 Así pues,
sois testigos de las obras de vuestros padres
y consentís en ellas, porque ellos
los mataron, y vosotros edificáis sus sepulcros.
49 Por eso dijo la sabiduría de
Dios: «Les enviaré profetas y apóstoles,
y a algunos los matarán y perseguirán,
50 para que se pida cuentas a esta generación
de la sangre de todos los profetas
derramada desde la creación del mundo,
51 desde la sangre de Abel hasta la
sangre de Zacarías, asesinado entre el
altar y el Templo». Sí, os lo aseguro: se le
pedirán cuentas a esta generación.
52 »¡Ay de vosotros, doctores de la
Ley, porque os habéis apoderado de la
llave de la sabiduría! Vosotros no habéis
entrado y a los que querían entrar se lo
habéis impedido.
53 Cuando salió de allí, los escribas y
fariseos comenzaron a atacarle con furia
y a acosarle a preguntas sobre muchas
cosas, 54 acechándole para cazarle
en alguna palabra.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
"Por tanto tengan cuidado para que la luz en ustedes no sea oscuridad. Si su cuerpo entero está lleno de luz y no tiene ninguna parte de oscuridad, será completamente brillante, como cuando una lámpara con sus rayos te dá luz.”" (Lc 11: 35-36). ¿En qué aspectos de mi vida espiritual necesito crecer aún y a qué cosas necesito renunciar en mi vida para que todo mi cuerpo pueda estar lleno de luz y ser santo?
