Commentary on the Gospel According to St. John, Chapter 7:
The challenge of how human knowledge can prevent belief is a theme through this chapter. At the start of the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus demonstrates that He will not be swayed by human expectations. After following His own plans, He explains He teaches for His Father’s glory, not His own. He uses the backdrop of the Festival’s water ritual to preach that anyone who thirsts can come to Him to drink, and this water represents the Spirit (see 4:10-14). He repeatedly pushes His audience to consider their perception of their knowledge of the faith and God. The highly educated Jewish leaders are not convinced and want to arrest him, but it is not His hour to die so they fail. Those who are not as educated in human knowledge are coming to believe.

The Unbelief of Jesus’ Brethren
1 After this Jesus went about in Galilee; he would not go about in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him. 2 Now the Jews’ feast of Tabernacles was at hand. 3 So his brethren said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples may see the works you are doing. 4 For no man works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For even his brethren did not believe in him. 6 Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify of it that its works are evil. 8 Go to the feast yourselves; I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” 9 So saying, he remained in Galilee.

10 But after his brethren had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. 11 The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” 12 And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.” 13 Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.
14 About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and taught. 15 The Jews marveled at it, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?” 16 So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me; 17 if any man’s will is to do his will, he shall know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. 18 He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. 19 Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?” 20 The people answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did one deed, and you all marvel at it. 22 Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man upon the sabbath. 23 If on the sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the sabbath I made a man’s whole body well? 24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”
Is This the Christ?
25 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? 26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? 27 Yet we know where this man comes from; and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.” 28 So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from?
But I have not come of my own accord; he who sent me is true, and him you do not know. 29 I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.” 30 So they sought to arrest him; but no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 Yet many of the people believed in him; they said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”
Officers Are Sent to Arrest Jesus
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd thus muttering about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. 33 Jesus then said, “I shall be with you a little longer, and then I go to him who sent me; 34 you will seek me and you will not find me; where I am you can not come.” 35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we shall not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”
Rivers of Living Water
37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, “If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink.
38 He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.’ ” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Division among the People
40 When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This is really the prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So there was a division among the people over him. 44 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.
The Authorities and the Woman Caught in Adultery
45 The officers then went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” 46 The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this man!” 47 The Pharisees answered them, “Are you led astray, you also? 48 Have any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? 49 But this crowd, who do not know the law, are accursed.” 50 Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, 51 “Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?” 52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet is to rise from Galilee.” 53 They went each each to his own house.

The ending of Chapter 7 describes the leaders arguing over how to handle the growing popularity of Jesus and it ends with the phrase, "They each went to his own house." Lord, are there areas of my life that need to be challenged by your example and your preaching? Give me the grace to let you change my life, rather than retreating inward and remaining in my own darkness.

1 Después de esto caminaba Jesús por
Galilea, pues no quería andar por Judea,
ya que los judíos le buscaban para matarle.
2 Pronto iba a ser la fiesta judía de los
Tabernáculos. 3 Entonces le dijeron sus
hermanos:
–Márchate de aquí y vete a Judea,
para que también tus discípulos vean
las obras que haces, 4 porque nadie hace
algo a escondidas si quiere ser conocido.
Puesto que haces estas cosas, muéstrate
al mundo.
5 Ni siquiera sus hermanos creían en
él. 6 Entonces, Jesús les dijo:
–Mi tiempo aún no ha llegado, pero
vuestro tiempo siempre está a punto.
7 El mundo no puede odiaros, pero a mí
me odia porque doy testimonio de él,
de que sus obras son malas. 8 Vosotros
subid a la fiesta; yo no subo a esta fiesta
porque mi tiempo aún no se ha cumplido.
9 Él dijo eso y se quedó en Galilea.
10 Pero una vez que sus hermanos subieron
a la fiesta, entonces él también subió,
no públicamente sino como a escondidas.
11 Los judíos le buscaban durante la
fiesta y decían:
–¿Dónde está ése?
12 Y la gente hacía muchos comentarios
sobre él. Unos decían:
–Es bueno.
Otros, en cambio:
–No, engaña a la gente.
13 Sin embargo, nadie hablaba abiertamente
de él por miedo a los judíos.
14 Mediada ya la fiesta, subió Jesús al
Templo y se puso a enseñar. 15 Los judíos
quedaron admirados y comentaban:
–¿Cómo sabe éste de letras sin haber
estudiado?
16 Entonces Jesús les respondió y
dijo:
–Mi doctrina no es mía sino del que
me ha enviado. 17 Si alguno quiere hacer
su voluntad conocerá si mi doctrina
es de Dios, o si yo hablo por mí mismo.
18 El que habla por sí mismo busca
su propia gloria; pero el que busca la
gloria del que le envió, ése es veraz y no
hay injusticia en él. 19 ¿No os dio Moisés
la Ley? Sin embargo, ninguno de vosotros
la cumple. ¿Por qué queréis matarme?
20 Respondió la multitud:
–Estás endemoniado; ¿quién te
quiere matar?
21 Jesús les contestó:
–Yo hice una sola obra y todos os
habéis extrañado. 22 Puesto que os dio
Moisés la circuncisión –aunque no es de
Moisés sino de los Patriarcas–, incluso
el sábado circuncidáis a un hombre. 23 Si
un hombre recibe la circuncisión el sábado
para no quebrantar la Ley de Moisés,
¿os indignáis contra mí porque he
curado por completo a un hombre en
sábado? 24 No juzguéis por las apariencias,
sino juzgad con recto juicio.
25 Entonces, algunos de Jerusalén decían:
–¿No es éste al que intentan matar?
26 Pues mirad cómo habla con toda libertad
y no le dicen nada. ¿Acaso habrán
reconocido las autoridades que éste es el
Cristo? 27 Sin embargo sabemos de dónde
es éste, mientras que cuando venga el
Cristo nadie conocerá de dónde es.
28 Jesús enseñando en el Templo clamó:
–Me conocéis y sabéis de dónde soy;
en cambio, yo no he venido de mí mismo,
pero el que me ha enviado, a quien
vosotros no conocéis, es veraz. 29 Yo le
conozco, porque de Él vengo y Él mismo
me ha enviado.
30 Intentaban detenerle, pero nadie le
puso las manos encima porque aún no
había llegado su hora.
31 Muchos de la multitud creyeron en
él y decían:
–Cuando venga el Cristo, ¿hará más
signos que los que hace éste?
32 Al oír los fariseos que la multitud
comentaba esto de él, los príncipes de
los sacerdotes y los fariseos enviaron alguaciles
para prenderle. 33 Entonces Jesús
les dijo:
–Aún estaré entre vosotros un poco
de tiempo, luego me iré al que me ha enviado.
34 Me buscaréis y no me encontraréis,
porque donde yo estoy vosotros no
podéis venir.
35 Se dijeron los judíos:
–¿A dónde se irá éste que no podamos
encontrarle? ¿Se irá tal vez a los
dispersos entre los griegos y enseñará a
los griegos? 36 ¿Qué significan estas palabras
que ha dicho: «Me buscaréis y no
me encontraréis», y «donde yo estoy vosotros
no podéis venir»?
37 En el último día, el más solemne
de la fiesta, estaba allí Jesús y clamó:
–Si alguno tiene sed, venga a mí; y
beba 38 quien cree en mí. Como dice la
Escritura, de sus entrañas brotarán ríos
de agua viva.
39 Se refirió con esto al Espíritu que
iban a recibir los que creyeran en él,
pues todavía no había sido dado el Espíritu,
ya que Jesús aún no había sido glorificado.
40 De entre la multitud que escuchaba
estas palabras, unos decían:
–Éste es verdaderamente el profeta.
41 Otros:
–Éste es el Cristo.
En cambio, otros replicaban:
–¿Acaso el Cristo viene de Galilea?
42 ¿No dice la Escritura que el Cristo viene
de la descendencia de David y de Belén,
la aldea de donde era David?
43 Se produjo entonces un desacuerdo
entre la multitud por su causa. 44 Algunos
de ellos querían prenderle, pero
nadie puso las manos sobre él.
45 Volvieron los alguaciles a los príncipes
de los sacerdotes y fariseos, y éstos
les dijeron:
–¿Por qué no lo habéis traído?
46 Respondieron los alguaciles:
–Jamás habló así hombre alguno.
47 Les replicaron entonces los fariseos:
–¿También vosotros habéis sido engañados?
48 ¿Acaso alguien de las autoridades
o de los fariseos ha creído en él?
49 Pero esta gente, que desconoce la Ley,
son unos malditos.
50 Nicodemo, aquel que ya había ido
antes adonde Jesús y que era uno de
ellos, les dijo:
51 –¿Es que nuestra Ley juzga a un
hombre sin haberle oído antes y conocer
lo que ha hecho?
52 Le respondieron:
–¿También tú eres de Galilea? Investiga
y te darás cuenta de que ningún
profeta surge de Galilea.
53 Y se volvió cada uno a su casa.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
El final del capítulo 7 describe a los líderes argumentando acerca de cómo manejar la popularidad creciente de Jesús y termina con la frase, "Ambos fueron a su propia casa." Señor, ¿hay áreas en mi vida que necesitan ser desafiadas por tu ejemplo y tu predicación? Dame la gracia de dejarte cambiar mi vida, en vez de encerrarme en mí mismo(a) y permanecer en mi propia oscuridad.
