Commentary on The Gospel According to St. John, Chapter 21:
The last chapter of John’s Gospel reveals Jesus moving His disciples forward in their mission. They back in the work of life – fishing without success. Jesus appears, leads them to a great catch of fish, and shares breakfast with them. Afterwards, Jesus and Peter have a talk about Peter’s future role caring for Jesus’ flock (see 10:1-18). Peter will follow in Jesus’ footsteps, even to death that brings glory to God. The author of the Gospel concludes his work by pointing out Jesus did far more than what this one book, or all the books of the world, could contain, thus giving us one last reason to believe.

Jesus Appears to Disciples by the Sea of Tiberias
1 After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he revealed himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat; but that night they caught nothing.
4 Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any fish?” They answered him, “No.” 6 He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, for the quantity of fish. 7 That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his clothes, for he was stripped for work, and sprang into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.
9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
Peter Is Given a Command
15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 A second time he said to him, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you fastened your own and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will fasten your belt for you and carry you where you do not wish to go.” 19 (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him, “Follow me.”
Jesus and the Beloved Disciple
20 Peter turned and saw following them the disciple whom Jesus loved, who had lain close to his breast at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!” 23 The saying spread abroad among the brethren that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?”
24 This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true.
25 But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

We have just completed the Gospel of St. John. Hopefully the many signs Jesus demonstrated in these passages have not only helped us to grow in greater understanding of who Jesus is, but also helped us to see where His glory has been made manifest in our own lives. What are some of the instances, or “signs” in my life where I didn’t have to question who it was because I “realized it was the Lord?” (Jn. 21:25)

1 Después volvió a aparecerse Jesús a
sus discípulos a orillas del mar de Tiberíades.
Se apareció así: 2 estaban juntos
Simón Pedro y Tomás –el llamado Dídimo–,
Natanael –que era de Caná de Galilea–, los
hijos de Zebedeo y otros dos de sus discípulos.
3 Les dijo Simón Pedro:
–Voy a pescar.
Le contestaron:
–Nosotros también vamos contigo.
Salieron y subieron a la barca. Pero
aquella noche no pescaron nada.
4 Cuando ya amaneció, se presentó
Jesús en la orilla, pero sus discípulos no
se dieron cuenta de que era Jesús. 5 Les
dijo Jesús:
–Muchachos, ¿tenéis algo de comer?
–No –le contestaron.
6 Él les dijo:
–Echad la red a la derecha de la barca
y encontraréis.
La echaron, y casi no eran capaces
de sacarla por la gran cantidad de peces.
7 Aquel discípulo a quien amaba Jesús le
dijo a Pedro:
–¡Es el Señor!
Al oír Simón Pedro que era el Señor
se ató la túnica, porque estaba desnudo,
y se echó al mar. 8 Los otros discípulos
vinieron en la barca, pues no estaban lejos
de tierra, sino a unos doscientos codos,
arrastrando la red con los peces.
9 Cuando descendieron a tierra vieron
unas brasas preparadas, un pez encima
y pan. 10 Jesús les dijo:
–Traed algunos de los peces que habéis
pescado ahora.
11 Subió Simón Pedro y sacó a tierra
la red llena de ciento cincuenta y tres
peces grandes. Y a pesar de ser tantos
no se rompió la red. 12 Jesús les dijo:
–Venid a comer.
Ninguno de los discípulos se atrevía
a preguntarle: «¿Tú quién eres?», pues
sabían que era el Señor.
13 Vino Jesús, tomó el pan y lo distribuyó
entre ellos, y lo mismo el pez.
14 Ésta fue la tercera vez que Jesús se apareció
a sus discípulos, después de resucitar
de entre los muertos.
15 Cuando acabaron de comer, le dijo
Jesús a Simón Pedro:
–Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas más
que éstos?
Le respondió:
–Sí, Señor, tú sabes que te quiero.
Le dijo:
–Apacienta mis corderos.
16 Volvió a preguntarle por segunda
vez:
–Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas?
Le respondió:
–Sí, Señor, tú sabes que te quiero.
Le dijo:
–Pastorea mis ovejas.
17 Le preguntó por tercera vez:
–Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me quieres?
Pedro se entristeció porque le preguntó
por tercera vez: «¿Me quieres?»,
y le respondió:
–Señor, tú lo sabes todo. Tú sabes
que te quiero.
Le dijo Jesús:
–Apacienta mis ovejas. 18 En verdad,
en verdad te digo: cuando eras más joven
te ceñías tú mismo y te ibas adonde
querías; pero cuando envejezcas extenderás
tus manos y otro te ceñirá y llevará
adonde no quieras 19 –esto lo dijo
indicando con qué muerte había de glorificar
a Dios.
Y dicho esto, añadió:
–Sígueme.
20 Se volvió Pedro y vio que le seguía
aquel discípulo que Jesús amaba,
el que en la cena se había recostado en
su pecho y le había preguntado: «Señor,
¿quién es el que te va a entregar?» 21 Y
Pedro, al verle, le dijo a Jesús:
–Señor, ¿y éste qué?
22 Jesús le respondió:
–Si yo quiero que él permanezca
hasta que yo vuelva, ¿a ti qué? Tú sígueme.
23 Por eso surgió entre los hermanos
el rumor de que aquel discípulo no moriría.
Pero Jesús no le dijo que no moriría,
sino: «Si yo quiero que él permanezca
hasta que yo vuelva, ¿a ti qué?»
24 Éste es el discípulo que da testimonio
de estas cosas y las ha escrito, y sabemos
que su testimonio es verdadero.
25 Hay, además, otras muchas cosas que
hizo Jesús y que, si se escribieran una
por una, pienso que ni aun el mundo
podría contener los libros que se tendrían
que escribir.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
Juan 21:25. Acabamos de completar el Evangelio según San Juan. Esperemos que las muchas señales que Jesús realizó en estos pasajes hayan ayudado no solo para hacernos crecer en una mayor comprensión en quién es Jesús, pero también para ver dónde su gloria ha sido manisfestada en nuestras vidas. Cuáles son las instancias o "señales" en mi vida donde nunca tuve que cuestionarme quién era, pues yo "me di cuenta que era el Señor" (Juan 21:25)
