Commentary on The Gospel According to St. John, Chapter 15
Jesus’ discourse to the disciples continues as He utilizes an Old Testament image: God’s people as a grape vine. The disciples are to bear good fruit by remaining united to Jesus. This fruit bearing is possible through Jesus’ word and serves to glorify the Father. Jesus explains the importance of the fruit of love, and He commands them to love as He does. The distinction between the world that does not believe and those who do believe is raised, pointing to future persecutions of the faithful. The Spirit, however, will help the disciples in their time of trial.

Jesus the True Vine
1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch of mine that bears no fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 This I command you, to love one another.
The World’s Hatred
18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me be fore it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all this they will do to you on my account, because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 He who hates me hates my Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 It is to fulfil the word that is written in their law, ‘They hated me without a cause.’ 26 But when the Counselor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me; 27 and you also are witnesses, because you have been with me from the beginning.

15 1 »Yo soy la vid verdadera y mi Padre
es el labrador. 2 Todo sarmiento
que en mí no da fruto lo corta, y todo
el que da fruto lo poda para que dé más
fruto. 3 Vosotros ya estáis limpios por la
palabra que os he hablado. 4 Permaneced
en mí y yo en vosotros. Como el sarmiento
no puede dar fruto por sí mismo
si no permanece en la vid, así tampoco
vosotros si no permanecéis en mí. 5 Yo
soy la vid, vosotros los sarmientos. El que
permanece en mí y yo en él, ése da mucho
fruto, porque sin mí no podéis hacer
nada. 6 Si alguno no permanece en mí
es arrojado fuera, como los sarmientos,
y se seca; luego los recogen, los arrojan
al fuego y arden. 7 Si permanecéis en mí
y mis palabras permanecen en vosotros,
pedid lo que queráis y se os concederá.
8 En esto es glorificado mi Padre, en que
deis mucho fruto y seáis discípulos míos.
9 »Como el Padre me amó, así os he
amado yo. Permaneced en mi amor. 10 Si
guardáis mis mandamientos, permaneceréis
en mi amor, como yo he guardado
los mandamientos de mi Padre y
permanezco en su amor. 11 Os he dicho
esto para que mi alegría esté en vosotros
y vuestra alegría sea completa. 12 Éste es
mi mandamiento: que os améis los unos
a los otros como yo os he amado. 13 Nadie
tiene amor más grande que el de dar
uno la vida por sus amigos. 14 Vosotros
sois mis amigos si hacéis lo que os mando.
15 Ya no os llamo siervos, porque el
siervo no sabe lo que hace su señor; a
vosotros, en cambio, os he llamado amigos,
porque todo lo que oí de mi Padre
os lo he hecho conocer. 16 No me habéis
elegido vosotros a mí, sino que yo os
he elegido a vosotros, y os he destinado
para que vayáis y deis fruto, y vuestro
fruto permanezca, para que todo lo
que pidáis al Padre en mi nombre os lo
conceda. 17 Esto os mando: que os améis
los unos a los otros.
18 »Si el mundo os odia, sabed que
antes que a vosotros me ha odiado
a mí.
19 Si fuerais del mundo, el mundo os
amaría como cosa suya; pero como no
sois del mundo, sino que yo os escogí
del mundo, por eso el mundo os odia.
20 Acordaos de las palabras que os he dicho:
no es el siervo más que su señor.
Si me han perseguido a mí, también a
vosotros os perseguirán. Si han guardado
mi doctrina, también guardarán la
vuestra. 21 Pero os harán todas estas cosas
a causa de mi nombre, porque no
conocen al que me ha enviado. 22 Si no
hubiera venido y les hubiera hablado,
no tendrían pecado. Pero ahora no tienen
excusa de su pecado.
23 »El que me odia a mí, también odia
a mi Padre. 24 Si no hubiera hecho ante
ellos las obras que ningún otro hizo, no
tendrían pecado; sin embargo, ahora las
han visto y me han odiado a mí, y también
a mi Padre. 25 Pero tenía que cumplirse
la palabra que estaba escrita en su
Ley: Me odiaron sin motivo.
26 »Cuando venga el Paráclito que yo
os enviaré de parte del Padre, el Espíritu
de la verdad que procede del Padre, Él
dará testimonio de mí. 27 También vosotros
daréis testimonio, porque desde el
principio estáis conmigo.
