Commentary on The Gospel According to St. John, Chapter 13:
John’s Gospel does not include the typical Last Supper scene; instead, we have a meal where Jesus prepares his disciples for the future. Jesus washes their feet, an act that only the lowest ranked servant would do. He explains that this is an example of the service they are to perform, and that their love will be a witness to others. Jesus speaks of His upcoming glory, but also of His departure. Finally, He reveals to Peter that Judas will betray Him, but also that Peter will deny Him.

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
1 Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 And during supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper, laid aside his garments, and tied a towel around himself. 5 Then he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter; and Peter said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not know now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part in me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but he is clean all over; and you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “You are not all clean.”
12 When he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant d is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. 18 I am not speaking of you all; I know whom I have chosen; it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19 I tell you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives any one whom I send receives me; and he who receives me receives him who sent me.”
Jesus Foretells His Betrayal
21 When Jesus had thus spoken, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was lying close to the breast of Jesus; 24 so Simon Peter beckoned to him and said, “Tell us who it is of whom he speaks.” 25 So lying thus, close to the breast of Jesus, he said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give this morsel when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, because Judas had the money box, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast”; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel, he immediately went out; and it was night.
The New Commandment
31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of man glorified, and in him God is glorified; 32 if God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now; but you shall follow afterward.” 37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the cock will not crow, till you have denied me three times.

We are told it is by knowing in advance the pattern of love that washes feet, is humbled, betrayed & crucified that we are able to believe that Jesus is Lord and so follow the pattern of the Master (v. 19). Lord, how does your resurrection help me to love even when it's painful?

1 La víspera de la fiesta de Pascua,
como Jesús sabía que había llegado
su hora de pasar de este mundo al Padre,
habiendo amado a los suyos que estaban
en el mundo, los amó hasta el fin.
2 Y mientras celebraban la cena,
cuando el diablo ya había sugerido en
el corazón de Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote,
que lo entregara, 3 como Jesús sabía
que todo lo había puesto el Padre en
sus manos y que había salido de Dios y
a Dios volvía, 4 se levantó de la cena, se
quitó el manto, tomó una toalla y se la
puso a la cintura. 5 Después echó agua
en una jofaina, y empezó a lavarles los
pies a los discípulos y a secárselos con
la toalla que se había puesto a la cintura.
6 Llegó a Simón Pedro y éste le dijo:
–Señor, ¿tú me vas a lavar a mí los
pies?
7 –Lo que yo hago no lo entiendes
ahora –respondió Jesús–. Lo comprenderás
después.
8 Le dijo Pedro:
–No me lavarás los pies jamás.
–Si no te lavo, no tendrás parte conmigo
–le respondió Jesús.
9 Simón Pedro le replicó:
–Entonces, Señor, no sólo los pies,
sino también las manos y la cabeza.
10 Jesús le dijo:
–El que se ha bañado no tiene necesidad
de lavarse más que los pies, porque
todo él está limpio. Y vosotros estáis
limpios, aunque no todos 11 –como sabía
quién le iba a entregar, por eso dijo: «No
todos estáis limpios».
12 Después de lavarles los pies se
puso el manto, se recostó a la mesa de
nuevo y les dijo:
–¿Comprendéis lo que he hecho
con vosotros? 13 Vosotros me llamáis el
Maestro y el Señor, y tenéis razón, porque
lo soy. 14 Pues si yo, que soy el Señor
y el Maestro, os he lavado los pies,
vosotros también debéis lavaros los pies
unos a otros. 15 Os he dado ejemplo para
que, como yo he hecho con vosotros,
también lo hagáis vosotros. 16 En verdad,
en verdad os digo: no es el siervo
más que su señor, ni el enviado más que
quien le envió. 17 Si comprendéis esto y
lo hacéis, seréis bienaventurados. 18 No
lo digo por todos vosotros: yo sé a quiénes
elegí; sino para que se cumpla la Escritura:
El que come mi pan levantó contra
mí su talón. 19 Os lo digo desde ahora,
antes de que suceda, para que cuando
ocurra creáis que yo soy. 20 En verdad,
en verdad os digo: quien recibe al que
yo envíe, a mí me recibe; y quien a mí
me recibe, recibe al que me ha enviado.
21 Cuando dijo esto Jesús se conmovió
en su espíritu, y declaró:
–En verdad, en verdad os digo que uno
de vosotros me va a entregar.
22 Los discípulos se miraban unos a
otros sin saber a quién se refería. 23 Estaba
recostado en el pecho de Jesús uno
de los discípulos, el que Jesús amaba.
24 Simón Pedro le hizo señas y le dijo:
–Pregúntale quién es ése del que habla.
25 Él, que estaba recostado sobre el
pecho de Jesús, le dice:
–Señor, ¿quién es?
26 Jesús le responde:
–Es aquel a quien dé el bocado que
voy a mojar.
Y después de mojar el bocado, se
lo da a Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote.
27 Entonces, tras el bocado, entró en él
Satanás. Y Jesús le dijo:
–Lo que vas a hacer, hazlo pronto.
28 Pero ninguno de los que estaban a
la mesa entendió con qué fin le dijo esto,
29 pues algunos pensaban que, como Judas
tenía la bolsa, Jesús le decía: «Compra lo
que necesitamos para la fiesta», o «da algo
a los pobres». 30 Aquél, después de tomar
el bocado, salió enseguida. Era de noche.
31 Cuando salió, dijo Jesús:
–Ahora es glorificado el Hijo del
Hombre y Dios es glorificado en él. 32 Si
Dios es glorificado en él, también Dios
le glorificará a él en sí mismo; y pronto
le glorificará.
33 »Hijos, todavía estoy un poco con
vosotros. Me buscaréis y como les dije
a los judíos: «Adonde yo voy, vosotros
no podéis venir», lo mismo os digo ahora
a vosotros. 34 Un mandamiento nuevo
os doy: que os améis unos a otros.
Como yo os he amado, amaos también
unos a otros. 35 En esto conocerán todos
que sois mis discípulos, si os tenéis amor
unos a otros.
36 Le dijo Simón Pedro:
–Señor, ¿adónde vas?
Jesús respondió:
–Adonde yo voy, tú no puedes seguirme
ahora, me seguirás más tarde.
37 Pedro le dijo:
–Señor, ¿por qué no puedo seguirte
ahora? Yo daré mi vida por ti.
38 Respondió Jesús:
–¿Tú darás la vida por mí? En verdad,
en verdad te digo que no cantará el
gallo sin que me hayas negado tres veces.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
Se nos dice que es conociendo de antemano el patrón de amor que lava los pies, es humillado, traicionado y crucificado que somos capaces de creer que Jesús es Señor y que entonces siganos el patrón del Maestro (v. 19). Señor, ¿Cómo me ayuda tu resurrección a a mar aún cuando es dolororso?
