Commentary on the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, Chapter 25:
After speaking to kings, Jeremiah now speaks to the whole nation. He recaps how God has sent prophets to the people to preach repentance, but the people have stubbornly refused to listen and thus are bringing harm on themselves. We hear more explicitly that this harm will come via King Nabuchadrezzar (AKA Nebuchadnezzar) of Babylon, and although he is a pagan foreigner, God describes him as “my servant” because he will enact God’s judgment. For seventy years the Israelites will have to serve Babylon, and then God will bring his judgement against Babylon. Using the image of a cup of wrath, God goes on to explain that He can bring this judgment against any and all nations.

The Babylonian Captivity Foretold
The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah (that was the first year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon), 2 which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: 3 “For twenty-three years, from the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, to this day, the word of the Lord has come to me, and I have spoken persistently to you, but you have not listened. 4 You have neither listened nor inclined your ears to hear, although the Lord persistently sent to you all his servants the prophets, 5 saying, ‘Turn now, every one of you, from his evil way and wrong doings, and dwell upon the land which the Lord has given to you and your fathers from of old and for ever; 6 do not go after other gods to serve and worship them, or provoke me to anger with the work of your hands. Then I will do you no harm.’ 7 Yet you have not listened to me, says the Lord, that you might provoke me to anger with the work of your hands to your own harm.
8 “Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: Because you have not obeyed my words, 9 behold, I will send for all the tribes of the north, says the Lord, and for Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these nations round about; I will utterly destroy them, and make them a horror, a hissing, and an everlasting reproach. 10 Moreover, I will banish from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the grinding of the millstones and the light of the lamp. 11 This whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. 12 Then after seventy years are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, says the Lord, making the land an everlasting waste.
13 I will bring upon that land all the words which I have uttered against it, everything written in this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations. 14 For many nations and great kings shall make slaves even of them; and I will recompense them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.”
The Cup of the Lord’s Wrath
15 Thus the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. 16 They shall drink and stagger and be crazed because of the sword which I am sending among them.”
17 So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand, and made all the nations to whom the Lord sent me drink it: 18 Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and princes, to make them a desolation and a waste, a hissing and a curse, as at this day; 19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his princes, all his people, 20 and all the foreign folk among them; all the kings of the land of Uz and all the kings of the land of the Philistines (Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod); 21 Edom, Moab, and the sons of Ammon; 22 all the kings of Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the islands across the sea; 23 Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all who cut the corners of their hair; 24 all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the mixed tribes that dwell in the desert; 25 all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media; 26 all the kings of the north, far and near, one after another, and all the kingdoms of the world which are on the face of the earth. And after them the king of Babylon shall drink.
27 “Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Drink, be drunk and vomit, fall and rise no more, because of the sword which I am sending among you.’
28 “And if they refuse to accept the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: You must drink! 29 For behold, I begin to work evil at the city which is called by my name, and shall you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, says the Lord of hosts.’
30 “You, therefore, shall prophesy against them all these words, and say to them:
‘The Lord will roar from on high,
and from his holy habitation utter his voice;
he will roar mightily against his fold,
and shout, like those who tread grapes,
against all the inhabitants of the earth.
31 The clamor will resound to the ends of the earth,
for the Lord has an indictment against the nations;
he is entering into judgment with all flesh,
and the wicked he will put to the sword,
says the Lord.’
32 “Thus says the Lord of hosts:
Behold, evil is going forth from nation to nation,
and a great tempest is stirring from the farthest parts of the earth!
33 “And those slain by the Lord on that day shall extend from one end of the earth to the other. They shall not be lamented, or gathered, or buried; they shall be dung on the surface of the ground.
34 “Wail, you shepherds, and cry,
and roll in ashes, you lords of the flock,
for the days of your slaughter and dispersion have come,
and you shall fall like choice rams.
35 No refuge will remain for the shepherds,
nor escape for the lords of the flock.
36 Listen, the cry of the shepherds,
and the wail of the lords of the flock!
For the Lord is despoiling their pasture,
37 and the peaceful folds are devastated,
because of the fierce anger
of the Lord.
38 Like a lion he has left his den, for their land has become a waste
because of the sword of the oppressor,
and because of his fierce anger.”

1 Palabra que fue dirigida a Jeremías
acerca del pueblo de Judá el año
cuarto de Yoyaquim, hijo de Josías, rey de
Judá, que es el año primero de Nabucodonosor,
rey de Babilonia. 2 El profeta Jeremías
la comunicó a todo el pueblo de Judá
y a todos los habitantes de Jerusalén, diciéndoles:
3 –Desde el año trece de Josías, hijo
de Amón, rey de Judá, hasta el día de
hoy, esto es, durante veintitrés años, se
me viene dirigiendo la palabra del Señor.
Os he ido hablando continuamente,
pero no me habéis escuchado. 4 El
Señor os envió continuamente a sus
siervos, los profetas, pero no escuchasteis,
ni prestasteis atención para escuchar,
5 cuando os decían: «Convertíos
cada uno de vuestro mal camino y de
la maldad de vuestras obras, y habitaréis
en la tierra que os dio el Señor a vosotros
y a vuestros padres por los siglos de
los siglos. 6 No andéis tras otros dioses
dándoles culto y postrándoos ante ellos,
y no me enojéis con las obras de vuestras
manos, y no os haré daño. 7 Pero no
me escuchasteis –oráculo del Señor–,
antes bien, me enojasteis con las obras
de vuestras manos, para desgracia vuestra
».
8 »Por eso, así dice el Señor de los
ejércitos: «Puesto que no escuchasteis
mis palabras, 9 Yo envío a buscar a todas
las gentes del norte –oráculo del Señor–,
y a Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia,
vasallo mío, los haré venir contra
este país, contra sus habitantes y contra
todas las naciones de su alrededor. Los
destinaré al exterminio, y haré de ellos
un espanto, un escarnio y una ruina
perpetua. 10 Haré cesar entre ellos la voz
de alegría y la voz de gozo, la voz de la
novia y la voz del novio, el rumor de las
piedras de molino y la luz de la lámpara.
11 Este país entero se convertirá en ruina,
en espanto. Estas naciones servirán
al rey de Babilonia setenta años.
12 »Pero cuando se cumplan los setenta
años, castigaré al rey de Babilonia,
a esa nación –oráculo del Señor–, por
su iniquidad, y a la tierra de los caldeos,
y los convertiré en perenne desolación.
13 Haré recaer sobre aquella tierra todas
las palabras que pronuncié contra ella
y cuanto ha profetizado Jeremías contra todas las naciones y está escrito en
el presente libro. 14 A saber, que naciones
numerosas y grandes reyes los sojuzgarán
a su vez a ellos, y que Yo los juzgaré
con arreglo a sus acciones y a las obras
de sus manos».
15 Así me ha dicho el Señor, Dios de
Israel:
–Toma de mi mano esta copa de
vino del furor y házsela beber a todas
las naciones a las que te envíe. 16 Que beban,
se tambaleen y enloquezcan ante la
espada que envíe entre ellos.
17 Yo tomé la copa de la mano del Señor
y se la hice beber a todas las naciones
donde me había enviado el Señor:
18 a Jerusalén y a las ciudades de Judá,
a sus reyes y a sus nobles, para convertirlos
en desolación, espanto, escarnio
y maldición, tal como sucede hoy, 19 al
faraón, rey de Egipto, a sus servidores,
a sus nobles y a todo su pueblo, 20 a todas
las gentes mezcladas, a todos los reyes
del país de Us, a todos los reyes del
país de los filisteos –a Ascalón, Gaza,
Ecrón y los restos de Asdod–, 21 a Edom
y Moab y los hijos de Amón, 22 a todos
los reyes de Tiro, a todos los reyes de
Sidón y a todos los reyes de las islas de
allende el Mar, 23 a Dedán, Tema y Buz y
a todos los de sienes rapadas, 24 a todos
los reyes de Arabia y a todos los reyes de
las gentes mezcladas que habitan el desierto,
25 a todos los reyes de Zimrí, a todos
los reyes de Elam y a todos los reyes
de Media, 26 a todos los reyes del norte,
los próximos y los lejanos, uno tras otro,
y a todos los reinos que hay sobre la faz
de la tierra. Y el rey de Sesac beberá después
de ellos.
27 –Les dirás:
«Esto dice el Señor de los ejércitos,
Dios de Israel: “Bebed, embriagaos
y vomitad, caed para no levantaros ya
ante la espada que Yo envío entre vosotros”.
28 Y si rehusaran tomar la copa de
tu mano para beber, les dirás: “Esto dice
el Señor de los ejércitos: Bebed inexorablemente.
29 Porque si en la ciudad que
lleva mi Nombre empiezo Yo a hacer el
mal, ¿vosotros vais a quedar impunes?
No quedaréis impunes, porque Yo conmino
la espada contra todos los habitantes
de la tierra” –oráculo del Señor
de los ejércitos–.
30 »Y tú les profetizarás todas estas
palabras, diciéndoles:
«El Señor ruge desde lo alto,
lanza su voz desde su morada santa,
ruge fuerte contra su majada,
canta a gritos, como los que pisan
uva,
contra todos los habitantes de la tierra.
31El estruendo llega al extremo de la
tierra,
porque el Señor llama a juicio a las
naciones,
hace justicia a toda carne,
entrega los impíos a la espada»
–oráculo del Señor–.
32Esto dice el Señor de los ejércitos:
«Mirad que una desgracia salta
de pueblo a pueblo,
un torbellino surge
de los extremos de la tierra.
33 »Aquel día habrá víctimas del Señor
de un cabo al otro de la tierra. No
se les hará duelo, no serán recogidas ni
enterradas, servirán de estiércol sobre la
superficie del campo.
34Gemid, pastores, gritad,
revolcaos en el polvo, mayorales del
rebaño,
que se cumplieron los días de vuestra
matanza
y vuestra dispersión:
caeréis como carneros escogidos.
35Se acabó el refugio para los pastores
y la escapatoria para los mayorales
del rebaño.
36¡Gritos de lamento de los pastores!
¡Ulular de los mayorales del rebaño!
Porque el Señor arrasa su pastizal.
37Las praderas pacíficas callan
ante el furor de la ira del Señor.
38Como león joven, abandonó su
guarida,
para convertir la tierra de ellos en
desolación,
en presencia de la espada devastadora,
en presencia del furor de su ira».
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
El Señor dice, "no... provoquen mi ira con las obras de sus manos." Estamos hechos para ser trabajadores en la viña del Señor, ´pero alguns trabajos son contrarios al plan de Dios. Señor, ayúdame a discernir tu voluntad en todas mis obras.
