Overview of Isaiah 65: Reward for the chosen of the Lord, New heavens and a new earth
The plea in 64:1 (“O that [you] would rend the heavens and come down”) is answered by God in this chapter… those who did not seek God, find him (v. 1), and those to whom God makes himself known, choose to reject him, opting instead for idolatry (vv. 2–5). God will judge [according to their choices](vv. 6–7). But he will also show mercy and not destroy the juice of the grape, the “remnant” of his true servants… (vv. 8–16).
The salvation that God will bring about will be so generous that it will call for a new creation (vv. 17–25): “new heavens and a new earth” that will erase the memory of former things (v. 17); a new Jerusalem where there shall be no more weeping but only joy and delight (vv. 18–23). In that time God will respond immediately when the people invoke him (v. 24). Even wild animals will become meek—all except the serpent, to which the primeval curse will still apply (v. 25).

1 I was ready to be sought by those who did not ask for me;
I was ready to be found by those who did not seek me.
I said, “Here am I, here am I.”
to a nation that did not call on my name.
2 I spread out my hands all the day
to a rebellious people,
who walk in a way that is not good,
following their own devices;
3 a people who provoke me
to my face continually,
sacrificing in gardens
and burning incense upon bricks;
4 who sit in tombs,
and spend the night in secret places;
who eat swine’s flesh,
and broth of abominable things is in their vessels;
5 who say, “Keep to yourself,
do not come near me, for I am set apart from you.”
These are a smoke in my nostrils,
a fire that burns all the day.
6 Behold, it is written before me:
“I will not keep silent, but I will repay,
yes, I will repay into their bosom
7 their iniquities and their fathers’ iniquities together,
ays the LORD;
because they burned incense upon the mountains
and reviled me upon the hills,
I will measure into their bosom
payment for their former doings.”
8 Thus says the LORD:
“As the wine is found in the cluster,
and they say, ‘Do not destroy it,
for there is a blessing in it,’
so I will do for my servants’ sake,
and not destroy them all.
9 I will bring forth descendants from Jacob,
and from Judah inheritors of my mountains;
my chosen shall inherit it,
and my servants shall dwell there.
10 Sharon shall become a pasture for flocks,
and the Valley of Achor a place for herds to lie down,
for my people who have sought me.
11 But you who forsake the LORD,
who forget my holy mountain,
who set a table for Fortune
and fill cups of mixed wine for Destiny;
12 I will destine you to the sword,
and all of you shall bow down to the slaughter;
because, when I called, you did not answer,
when I spoke, you did not listen,
but you did what was evil in my eyes,
and chose what I did not delight in.”
13 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:
“Behold, my servants shall eat,
but you shall be hungry;
behold, my servants shall drink,
but you shall be thirsty;
behold, my servants shall rejoice,
but you shall be put to shame;
14 behold, my servants shall sing for gladness of heart,
but you shall cry out for pain of heart,
and shall wail for anguish of spirit.
15 You shall leave your name to my chosen for a curse,
and the Lord God will slay you;
but his servants he will call by a different name.
16 So that he who blesses himself in the land
shall bless himself by the God of truth,
and he who takes an oath in the land
shall swear by the God of truth;
because the former troubles are forgotten
and are hidden from my eyes.
17 “For behold, I create new heavens
and a new earth;
and the former things shall not be remembered
or come into mind.
18 But be glad and rejoice for ever
in that which I create;
for behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing,
and her people a joy.
19 I will rejoice in Jerusalem,
and be glad in my people;
no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping
and the cry of distress.
20 No more shall there be in it
an infant that lives but a few days,
or an old man who does not fill out his days,
for the child shall die a hundred years old,
and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed.
21 They shall build houses and inhabit them;
they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22 They shall not build and another inhabit;
they shall not plant and another eat;
for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be,
and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
23 They shall not labor in vain,
or bear children for calamity;
for they shall be the offspring of the blessed of the LORD,
and their children with them.
24 Before they call I will answer,
while they are yet speaking I will hear.
25 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together,
the lion shall eat straw like the ox;
and dust shall be the serpent’s food.
They shall not hurt or destroy
in all my holy mountain,
says the LORD.”

1 Me dejé encontrar por quienes
no preguntaban,me hallaron los
que no me buscaban.
Dije: “¡Aquí estoy, aquí estoy!”,
a una nación que no invocaba mi
Nombre.
2 Extendía mis manos todo el día
a un pueblo rebelde,
que anda por un camino que no es
bueno
en pos de sus antojos,
3 un pueblo que me provoca a la ira
en la cara, de continuo,
que hace sacrificios en los huertos
y quema incienso sobre los adobes.
4 Que se asientan entre tumbas
y pasan la noche en cavernas,
que comen carne de cerdo
y caldos inmundos en sus platos.
5 Que dicen: “Apártate,
no te acerques a mí, que para ti soy
santo”.
Esas cosas son humo irritante para
mi nariz,
fuego encendido todo el día.
6 Está escrito en mi presencia:
“No me callaré, sino que les daré su
merecido;
daré en su regazo lo merecido
7 por vuestras culpas y las culpas de
vuestros padres,
todas juntas –dice el Señor–,
que quemaron incienso en los montes
y me ultrajaron en las colinas.
Les tasaré sus obras pasadas
y pondré en su regazo la recompensa”.
Recompensa de los elegidos
8 Así dice el Señor:
Como cuando está el jugo en el racimo
se dice: “No lo eches a perder,
que tiene bendición”,
así haré Yo en atención de mis siervos,
para no echarlo todo a perder.
9 De Jacob haré salir la simiente,
y de Judá, el que herede mis montañas.
Mis elegidos las heredarán,
mis siervos habitarán allí.
10 El Sarón servirá de pastizal para las
ovejas
y el valle de Acor, de establo de vacas
para mi pueblo, para los que me han
buscado.
11 Pero a vosotros, los que abandonasteis
al Señor,
los que olvidasteis mi monte santo,
los que preparasteis mesa para Gad,
los que llenasteis copas para Mení,
12 a vosotros os destino la espada;
todos vosotros os arrodillaréis para
el matadero,
porque llamé y no respondisteis,
hablé y no escuchasteis,
sino que hicisteis el mal ante mis
ojos
y elegisteis lo que me disgustaba».
13 Por eso, así dice el Señor Dios:
Mirad: mis siervos comerán
pero vosotros pasaréis hambre;
mis siervos beberán
pero vosotros pasaréis sed;
mis siervos se alegrarán
pero vosotros os avergonzaréis;
14 mis siervos cantarán con corazón
alegre,
pero vosotros gritaréis con corazón
dolorido,
y daréis alaridos con espíritu quebrantado.
15 Y dejaréis vuestro nombre
para mis elegidos con la maldición:
“¡Que te mate el Señor Dios!”,
pero a sus siervos los llamará con
otro nombre.
16 Quien desee ser bendecido en la
tierra
será bendecido por el Dios del
Amén,
y quien preste juramento en la tierra
jurará por el Dios del Amén,
porque las angustias pasadas serán
olvidadas,
y quedarán ocultas a mis ojos.
Los cielos nuevos y la tierra nueva
17 Porque he aquí que
Yo creo unos cielos nuevos y una
tierra nueva.
Las cosas pasadas no serán recordadas,
ni vendrán a la memoria.
18 Al contrario, alegraos y regocijaos
eternamente
de lo que Yo voy a crear,
pues voy a crear a Jerusalén para el
gozo,
y a su pueblo para la alegría.
19 Me gozaré en Jerusalén
y me alegraré en su pueblo,
y no se oirán más en ella
voces de llanto ni clamor de gemidos.
20 Ya no habrá allí niño que viva pocos
días,
ni anciano que no colme sus días,
pues se considerará que era joven
el que muera centenario,
y a quien no llegue a los cien años
se le tendrá por maldito.
21 Edificarán casas y las habitarán,
plantarán viñas y comerán de sus
frutos.
22 No edificarán, y habitará otro,
no plantarán, y comerá otro,
pues los días de mi pueblo serán
como los días del árbol,
y de las obras de sus manos disfrutarán
mis elegidos.
23 No trabajarán en vano,
ni aguardará la ansiedad a los hijos
que engendren,
pues serán un linaje de benditos del
Señor,
y sus vástagos lo mismo que ellos.
24 Sucederá que antes de que me invoquen
Yo responderé;
apenas hablen
Yo los escucharé.
25 El lobo y el cordero pastarán juntos,
y el león, como el buey, comerá paja,
pero la serpiente se alimentará del
polvo.
No harán mal ni causarán daño
en todo mi monte santo
–dice el Señor–.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina para el día de hoy
El Señor creará un nuevo cielo y una nueva tierra. Imagina cómo sería vivir en un sitio sin llanto, sin muerte, sin trabajo fútil. ¿Cómo será Señor, vivir esa vida de alegría contigo?
