Commentary on the Book of Genesis, Chapter 24:
Abraham knows Isaac’s future must be planned, and he wants his son to marry within the extended family. With a great show of wealth and a multitude of prayers, a servant departs for Nahor where Abraham’s brother lives. The servant stops at a well, and Isaac’s cousin Rebekah displays abundant hospitality, an action that answers a prayer the servant had made. Typical of important events in salvation history, we read the events as they take place, and then we read them again as they are explained. Isaac sees Rebekah at the well of seeing (16:14), and the two are married, preparing us to see God work through the next generation.

The Marriage of Isaac and Rebekah
1 Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years; and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. 2 And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his house, who had charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh, 3 and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell, 4 but will go to my country and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” 5 The servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman may not be willing to follow me to this land; must I then take your son back to the land from which you came?” 6 Abraham said to him, “See to it that you do not take my son back there. 7 The Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my birth, and who spoke to me and swore to me, ‘To your descendants I will give this land,’ he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. 8 But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be free from this oath of mine; only you must not take my son back there.” 9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter.
10 Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed, taking all sorts of choice gifts from his master; and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor. 11 And he made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time when women go out to draw water. 12 And he said, “O Lord, God of my master Abraham, grant me success today, I beg you, and show mercy to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. 14 Let the maiden to whom I shall say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who shall say, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels’—let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I shall know that you have shown mercy to my master.”
15 Before he had done speaking, behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her water jar upon her shoulder. 16 The maiden was very fair to look upon, a virgin, whom no man had known. She went down to the spring, and filled her jar, and came up. 17 Then the servant ran to meet her, and said, “Please give me a little water to drink from your jar.” 18 She said, “Drink, my lord”; and she quickly let down her jar upon her hand, and gave him a drink. 19 When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw for your camels also, until they have done drinking.” 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw, and she drew for all his camels. 21 The man gazed at her in silence to learn whether the Lord had prospered his journey or not.
22 When the camels had done drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing a half shekel, and two bracelets for her arms weighing ten gold shekels, 23 and said, “Tell me whose daughter you are. Is there room in your father’s house for us to lodge in?” 24 She said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 She added, “We have both straw and food enough, and room to lodge in.” 26 The man bowed his head and worshiped the Lord, 27 and said, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his mercy and his faithfulness toward my master. As for me, the Lord has led me in the way to the house of my master’s kinsmen.”
28 Then the maiden ran and told her mother’s household about these things. 29 Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban; and Laban ran out to the man, to the spring. 30 When he saw the ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s arms, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, “Thus the man spoke to me,” he went to the man; and behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring. 31 He said, “Come in, O blessed of the Lord; why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.” 32 So the man came into the house; and Laban ungirded the camels, and gave him straw and food for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 Then food was set before him to eat; but he said, “I will not eat until I have told my errand.” He said, “Speak on.”
34 So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant. 35 The Lord has greatly blessed my master, and he has become great; he has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, menservants and maidservants, camels and donkeys. 36 And Sarah my master’s wife bore a son to my master when she was old; and to him he has given all that he has. 37 My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell; 38 but you shall go to my father’s house and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son.’ 39 I said to my master, ‘Perhaps the woman will not follow me.’ 40 But
he said to me, ‘The Lord, before whom I walk, will send his angel with you and prosper your way; and you shall take a wife for my son from my kindred and from my father’s house; 41 then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my kindred; and if they will not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.’
42 “I came today to the spring, and said, ‘O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, if now you will prosper the way which I go, 43 behold, I am standing by the spring of water; let the young woman who comes out to draw, to whom I shall say, “Please give me a little water from your jar to drink,” 44 and who will say to me, “Drink, and I will draw for your camels also,” let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master’s son.’
45 “Before I had done speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her water jar on her shoulder; and she went down to the spring, and drew. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’ 46 She quickly let down her jar from her shoulder, and said, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels drink also.’ So I drank, and she gave the camels drink also. 47 Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the ring on her nose, and the brace- lets on her arms. 48 Then I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord, and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way to take the daughter of my master’s kinsman for his son. 49 Now then, if you will deal loyally and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.”
50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered, “The thing comes from the Lord; we cannot speak to you bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before you, take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has spoken.”
52 When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed himself to the earth before the Lord. 53 And the servant brought forth jewelry of silver and of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave to her brother and to her mother costly ornaments. 54 And he and the men who were with him ate and drank, and they spent the night there. When they arose in the morning, he said, “Send me back to my master.” 55 Her brother and her mother said, “Let the maiden remain with us a while, at least ten days; after that she may go.” 56 But he said to them, “Do not delay me, since the Lord has prospered my way; let me go that I may go to my master.” 57 They said, “We will call the maiden, and ask her.” 58 And they called Rebekah, and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will go.” 59 So they sent away Rebekah their sister and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said to her, “Our sister, be the mother of thousands of ten thousands; and may your descendants possess the gate of those who hate them!” 61 Then Rebekah and her maids arose, and rode upon the camels and followed the man; thus the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.
62 Now Isaac had come from Beer-lahai-roi, and was dwelling in the Negeb. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening; and he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, there were camels coming. 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she alighted from the camel, 65 and said to the servant, “Who is the man yonder, walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “It is my mas- ter.” So she took her veil and covered herself. 66 And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. 67 Then Isaac brought her into the tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

Abrahán era anciano, entrado en
años, y el Señor le había bendecido
en todo.
2 Abrahán dijo al siervo más viejo de
su casa, el que administraba todo cuanto
tenía:
–Pon tu mano bajo mi muslo, 3 que
te voy a hacer jurar por el Señor, Dios
del cielo y Dios de la tierra, que no buscarás
para mi hijo una esposa de las hijas
de los cananeos entre los que habito;
4 sino que irás a mi tierra, a mi patria, y
buscarás una esposa para mi hijo Isaac.
5 El siervo le contestó:
–Bien, pero si la mujer no quiere venir
conmigo a esta tierra, ¿he de hacer
entonces volver a tu hijo a la tierra de
donde saliste?
6 Abrahán le respondió:
–Guárdate de llevar allí a mi hijo. 7 El
Señor, Dios del cielo, que me sacó de la
casa de mi padre y de mi tierra natal, y
que me habló y me juró diciendo: «Yo
daré esta tierra a tu descendencia», Él
enviará a su ángel delante de ti, y encontrarás
allí una esposa para mi hijo. 8 Si
ella no quiere venir contigo, quedas desligado
de este juramento; pero a mi hijo,
no le lleves allí.
9 Entonces el siervo puso su mano
bajo el muslo de Abrahán y le prestó juramento
sobre estas cosas.
10 Después, el siervo tomó diez camellos
de su señor, y partió llevando con él
todo lo mejor de su señor; se puso en
camino y fue a Aram–Naharaim, la ciudad
de Najor.
11 Al atardecer, cuando salen las mujeres
a recoger agua, hizo arrodillar a
los camellos fuera de la ciudad junto al
pozo de agua. 12 Y dijo:
–Señor, Dios de mi amo Abrahán,
te ruego que me asistas hoy, y uses misericordia
con mi amo Abrahán. 13 Voy
a quedarme junto a la fuente del agua,
14 y cuando las hijas de la gente de la ciudad
salgan a sacar agua, entonces, la joven
a la que le diga: «Inclina tu cántaro,
por favor, para que pueda beber», y ella
me responda: «Bebe, y además, voy a
abrevar tus camellos», ésa has destinado
para tu siervo Isaac. Así conoceré que
has usado misericordia con mi amo.
15 Aún no había acabado él de hablar,
cuando salió Rebeca, hija de Betuel, el
hijo de Milcá, esposa de Najor, hermano
de Abrahán, con su cántaro al hombro.
16 La joven era muy hermosa, era
virgen y no había conocido varón. Bajó
a la fuente, llenó su cántaro y volvió a
subir. 17 El siervo corrió a su encuentro
y le dijo:
–Por favor, déjame beber un poco
de agua de tu cántaro.
18 Ella contestó:
–Bebe, señor.
Y en seguida bajó el cántaro a las
manos y le dio de beber. 19 Cuando terminó
de darle a él de beber, le dijo:
–Voy a sacar agua también para tus
camellos, hasta que acaben de beber.
20 Rápidamente vació el cántaro en el
abrevadero y fue corriendo al pozo a sacar
más, y sacó para todos los camellos.
21 El hombre la miraba en silencio, hasta
saber si el Señor había dado éxito a
su viaje o no.
22 Cuando los camellos acabaron de
beber, el hombre le ofreció un anillo de
oro de medio siclo de peso para la nariz,
y dos pulseras de oro de diez siclos para
los brazos. 23 Y le preguntó:
–¿De quién eres hija? Dímelo, por
favor. ¿Tendremos sitio en casa de tu
padre para pasar la noche?
24 Ella le contestó:
–Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo que Milcá
dio a Najor.
25 Y añadió:
–En casa hay paja, forraje abundante
y sitio para pasar la noche.
26 Aquel hombre cayó de rodillas y
adoró al Señor, 27 diciendo:
–Bendito sea el Señor, Dios de mi
amo Abrahán, que no ha cesado de usar
misericordia y fidelidad con mi amo;
al ponerme en camino, el Señor me ha
conducido a casa del hermano de mi
amo.
28 La joven echó a correr y contó
todo esto en casa de su madre.
29 Rebeca tenía un hermano llamado
Labán, el cual salió corriendo hacia
el hombre que estaba fuera junto a
la fuente. 30 Así pues, al ver el anillo y
las pulseras en el brazo de su hermana,
y tras oír la explicación de su hermana
Rebeca contando lo que le había dicho
aquel hombre, fue hasta el hombre que
permanecía de pie junto a los camellos
cerca de la fuente 31 y le dijo:
–Ven, bendito del Señor. ¿Por qué
sigues fuera? He preparado la casa y sitio
para los camellos.
32 Entonces el hombre entró a la casa.
Labán desaparejó los camellos, les echó
paja y forraje, y trajo agua para que el
hombre y los que le acompañaban se lavasen
los pies. 33 Después le preparó de
comer; pero aquel hombre dijo:
–No comeré hasta que haya expuesto
lo que debo decir.
Labán le dijo:
–Habla.
34 Él empezó diciendo:
–Yo soy un siervo de Abrahán. 35 El
Señor ha bendecido abundantemente a
mi amo y lo ha hecho rico: le ha dado
ovejas y vacas, plata y oro, siervos y siervas,
camellos y asnos. 36 La mujer de mi
amo, Sara, ya en su vejez, le ha dado un
hijo al que ha entregado todo cuanto
posee. 37 Y mi amo me hizo jurar lo siguiente:
«No buscarás esposa para mi
hijo entre las hijas de los cananeos, en
cuya tierra habito; 38 sino que irás a mi
casa paterna, a mi familia, y buscarás
una esposa para mi hijo». 39 Y cuando yo
le dije a mi amo que pudiera ser que la
mujer no viniera conmigo, 40 él me dijo:
«El Señor, en cuya presencia he caminado,
enviará contigo a su ángel, que dará
éxito a tu viaje, y encontrarás para mi
hijo una esposa de mi familia y de mi
casa paterna. 41 Sólo quedarás desligado
de mi juramento cuando hayas llegado
a mi familia; aunque no te la den, también
quedarás desligado de mi juramento
». 42 Cuando he llegado hoy a la fuente
he dicho: «Señor, Dios de mi amo Abrahán,
si te dignas dar éxito al viaje que
he emprendido, 43 mira, yo me coloco
junto a la fuente de agua, y a la doncella
que suba a sacar agua le diré: “Por favor,
dame de beber un poco de agua de tu
cántaro”; 44 y si ella me contesta: “Bebe
tú, y además sacaré agua para tus camellos”;
ésa es la mujer que destina el Señor
para el hijo de mi amo».
45 No había terminado de hablar conmigo
mismo, cuando salió Rebeca con
su cántaro al hombro, bajó a la fuente y
sacó agua. Entonces le dije: «Dame de
beber, por favor». 46 Y en seguida bajó el
cántaro, y me contestó: «Bebe, y además
abrevaré tus camellos». Yo bebí y ella
abrevó también los camellos. 47 Entonces
le pregunté: «¿De quién eres hija?»;
y me contestó: «Soy hija de Betuel, el
hijo que Milcá dio a Najor». Entonces le
puse un anillo en la nariz y pulseras en
los brazos. 48 Luego caí de rodillas y adoré
al Señor; y bendije al Señor Dios de
mi amo Abrahán, porque me había conducido
por el camino acertado para encontrar
a la hija del hermano de mi amo
para su hijo. 49 Ahora, pues, si tenéis a
bien usar de misericordia y lealtad hacia
mi amo, decídmelo; y si no, decídmelo
también, para tirar a derecha o a
izquierda.
50 Labán y Betuel le contestaron:
–Todo esto viene del Señor, y nosotros
no podemos decirte ni bien
ni mal. 51 Ante ti está Rebeca, tómala
contigo y vete: que sea la esposa del
hijo de tu amo, tal como ha dispuesto
el Señor.
52 Cuando el siervo de Abrahán escuchó
sus palabras, se postró en tierra ante
el Señor. 53 Después sacó objetos de plata
y de oro, y vestidos, y se los entregó
a Rebeca; y también dio valiosos regalos
a su hermano y a su madre. 54 Después,
él y los hombres que le acompañaban
comieron y bebieron, y pasaron
allí la noche.
Cuando a la mañana siguiente se levantaron,
dijo:
–Permitidme volver a mi amo.
55 Pero el hermano y la madre de Rebeca
dijeron:
–Que se quede la joven al menos
diez días con nosotros, después irá.
56 Él les contestó:
–No me hagáis retrasarme, ya que el
Señor ha dado éxito a mi viaje; permitidme
que vaya a mi amo.
57 Ellos respondieron:
–Llamemos a la joven y preguntémosle
su parecer.
58 Llamaron a Rebeca y le preguntaron:
–¿Quieres ir con este hombre?
Ella respondió:
–Iré con él.
59 Entonces dejaron partir a su hermana
Rebeca y a su nodriza, junto con
el siervo de Abrahán y sus hombres. 60 Y
bendijeron a Rebeca diciéndole:
–Tú eres nuestra hermana,
que crezcas por millares y millares,
que domine tu descendencia
las ciudades de sus enemigos.
61 Rebeca y sus doncellas se levantaron,
montaron en los camellos y siguieron
al hombre. El siervo tomó consigo a
Rebeca y partió.
62 Isaac había vuelto del pozo de Lajay–
Roy y habitaba en la región del Négueb.
63 Un atardecer salió Isaac al campo
a distraerse, y al alzar la vista vio que
venían camellos. 64 También Rebeca alzó
la vista y, al ver a Isaac, se bajó del camello
65 y preguntó al siervo:
–¿Quién es aquel hombre que viene
por el campo a nuestro encuentro?
El siervo respondió:
–Es mi amo.
Entonces ella tomó el velo y se cubrió.
66 El siervo contó a Isaac todo lo
que había hecho 67 e Isaac condujo a Rebeca
a la tienda de Sara, su madre; la
tomó consigo y la hizo su esposa. Isaac
la amó, y así se consoló de la muerte de
su madre.
