Commentary on the Book of Genesis, Chapter 19:
Our scene shifts to the city of Sodom, one of the sinful cities that may be destroyed (18:20). Lot lives there, and similar to his uncle Abraham in chapter 18, he meets two angels disguised as men and offers them hospitality. The need for hospitality becomes clear when all the men of the town ask to have sex with the visitors and threaten violence if their desires are not met. The men’s refusal to be dissuaded from their plan proves the complaints about Sodom (18:20-21) are true, so God’s judgment comes. The angels save Lot and those of his family who are willing to obey. Lot’s daughters believe all of humanity has been destroyed, so, in similar events to those after the Flood (9:20-25), they have an incestuous relationship with their drunken father, and their resulting descendants are distant relatives and often enemies of the Jews.

The Immorality of Sodom
1 The two angels came to Sodom in the evening; and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and bowed himself with his face to the earth, 2 and said, “My lords, turn aside, I pray you, to your servant’s house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise up early and go on your way.” They said, “No; we will spend the night in the street.” 3 But he urged them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house; and he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. 4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house; 5 and they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.” 6 Lot went out of the door to the men, shut the door after him, 7 and said, “I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. 8 Behold, I have two daughters who have not known man; let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please; only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.”
9 But they said, “Stand back!” And they said, “This fellow came to sojourn, and he would play the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them.” Then they pressed hard against the man Lot, and drew near to break the door. 10 But the men put forth their hands and brought Lot into the house to them, and shut the door. 11 And they struck with blindness the men who were at the door of the house, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves groping for the door.
Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed
12 Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or any one you have in the city, bring them out of the place; 13 for we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.” 14 So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, “Up, get out of this place; for the Lord is about to de-stroy the city.” But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting.
15 When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city.” 16 But he lingered; so the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him forth and set him outside the city. 17 And when they had brought them forth, they said, “Flee for your life; do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley; flee to the hills, lest you be consumed.” 18 And Lot said to them, “Oh, no, my lords; 19 behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life; but I cannot flee to the hills, lest the disaster overtake me, and I die. 20 Behold, yonder city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there—is it not a little one?
—and my life will be saved!”
21 He said to him, “Behold, I grant you this favor also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken. 22 Make haste, escape there; for I can do nothing till you arrive there.” Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. 23 The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar.
24 Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; 25 and he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 26 But Lot’s wife behind him looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. 27 And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord; 28 and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the valley, and beheld, and behold, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace.
29 So it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.
The Shameful Origin of the Moabites and Ammonites
30 Now Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the hills with his two daughters, for he was afraid to dwell in Zoar; so he dwelt in a cave with his two daughters. 31 And the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is not a man on earth to come in to us after the manner of all the earth. 32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve offspring through our father.” 33 So they made their father drink wine that night; and the first-born went in, and lay with her father; he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. 34 And on the next day, the first-born said to the younger, “Behold, I lay last night with my father; let us make him drink wine tonight also; then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve offspring through our father.” 35 So they made their father drink wine that night also; and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. 36 Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father. 37 The first-born bore a son, and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day. 38 The younger also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites to this day.

Lord, help me to not drag my feet like Lot when you're calling me onward, or get distracted by the turmoil in the world around me like his wife. Are there ways I've gotten stuck looking at the past with regret, or at the present without hope? Grant that I may look at every situation in my life through the lens of faith, knowing that you work all things to the good for those who love you.

Los dos ángeles llegaron a Sodoma
al atardecer; Lot estaba sentado
a la puerta de la ciudad. Cuando Lot
los vio, se levantó, salió a su encuentro y
los adoró rostro en tierra. 2 Les dijo:
–Por favor, señores míos, venid a
casa de vuestro siervo, pasad la noche,
y lavaos los pies; así podréis madrugar y
seguir vuestro camino.
Le contestaron:
–No. Pasaremos la noche en la plaza.
3 Él les insistió tanto que se fueron
con él y entraron a su casa; les preparó
un banquete, coció panes ácimos y
comieron. 4 Aún no se habían acostado,
cuando los hombres de la ciudad, hombres
de Sodoma, tanto jóvenes como
viejos, todo el pueblo a la vez, rodearon
la casa. 5 Llamaron a Lot y le preguntaron:
–¿Dónde están los hombres que entraron
anoche en tu casa? Sácanoslos
para que los conozcamos.
6 Lot salió hacia ellos a la entrada y
cerró la puerta tras él. 7 Les dijo:
–Por favor, hermanos míos, no cometáis
tal maldad. 8 Mirad, tengo dos
hijas que aún no han conocido varón,
voy a sacároslas y haced con ellas lo que
queráis; ahora bien, a estos hombres no
les hagáis nada, puesto que se han cobijado
bajo mi techo. 9 Le contestaron:
–¡Quítate de ahí!
Y añadieron:
–¿Uno que ha venido como extranjero
quiere hacer de juez? Ahora te trataremos
a ti peor que a ellos.
Y empujaron violentamente a Lot de
tal modo que estaban a punto de derribar
la puerta.
10 Pero los hombres alargaron la
mano, metieron a Lot junto a ellos dentro
de la casa y cerraron la puerta. 11 Y
deslumbraron a los que estaban a la entrada
de la casa, tanto pequeños como
mayores, de forma que no conseguían
encontrar la entrada.
12 Entonces los hombres le preguntaron
a Lot:
–¿A quién más tienes aquí? A yernos,
hijos e hijas, y a todos los que tengas
en la ciudad, sácalos de este lugar,
13 pues vamos a destruirlo, porque
es muy grande el clamor ante el Señor
contra sus habitantes, y nos ha enviado
a destruirlo.
14 Lot salió y habló con sus yernos,
los que iban a casarse con sus hijas, y les
dijo: –Levantaos, salid de este lugar porque
el Señor va a destruir la ciudad.
Pero a ellos les pareció que bromeaba.
15 Al amanecer, los ángeles apremiaron
a Lot diciéndole:
–Levántate, y llévate a tu mujer y a
tus dos hijas que se encuentran aquí, no
vaya a ser que perezcas en el castigo de
la ciudad.
16 Él se retardaba, y entonces aquellos
hombres los agarraron de la mano a
él, a su mujer y a sus dos hijas en un acto
de misericordia del Señor hacia él. 17 Le
sacaron y le colocaron fuera de la ciudad.
Y cuando los sacaron afuera, uno
le dijo:
–Huye, por tu vida; no mires atrás
ni te detengas en toda la vega; huye a la
montaña, pues si no, perecerás.
18 Lot les contestó:
–No, por favor, mi Señor; 19 he aquí
que tu siervo ha hallado gracia a tus
ojos, y ha sido grande la misericordia
que has tenido conmigo al salvarme la
vida; pero no podré huir hasta la montaña
sin que me alcance la desgracia y
muera. 20 Mira esa ciudad; está cerca
para refugiarme allí y es bien poca cosa;
huiré allí –bien poca cosa es– y salvaré
la vida.
21 Él le dijo:
–Mira, te acepto también esta petición
de no destruir la ciudad de la que
hablas; 22 date prisa, huye allí, pues no
puedo hacer nada hasta que llegues.
Por eso aquella ciudad se llamó Soar.
23 Salía el sol en el horizonte cuando
Lot llegó a Soar. 24 Entonces el Señor
hizo llover sobre Sodoma y Gomorra
azufre y fuego lanzados por el Señor
desde el cielo. 25 Destruyó aquellas ciudades
y toda la vega, con todos los habitantes
de las ciudades y las plantas del
suelo. 26 La mujer de Lot miró hacia atrás
y se convirtió en estatua de sal.
27 Abrahán se levantó de madrugada
y fue al lugar donde había estado con
el Señor. 28 Miró hacia Sodoma y Gomorra
y hacia toda la región de la vega, y
vio que subía de la tierra una humareda
como la de un horno. 29 Así, Dios, cuando
destruyó las ciudades de la vega, se
acordó de Abrahán y libró a Lot de la
catástrofe que arrasó las ciudades en las
que había habitado Lot.
Luego subió Lot desde Soar y se estableció
en la montaña con sus dos hijas,
pues tuvo miedo de vivir en Soar. Él y
sus dos hijas habitaban en una cueva. 31 Entonces
la mayor dijo a la más joven:
–Nuestro padre es anciano, y en la
región no hay un hombre que se una
con nosotras como es costumbre en
todo el mundo. 32 Vamos, hagamos beber
vino a nuestro padre, durmamos
con él y tendremos descendencia de
nuestro padre.
33 Aquella noche hicieron beber vino
a su padre, y la mayor fue y durmió con
su padre sin que él se diera cuenta de
cuando ella se acostó ni de cuando se
levantó. 34 Al día siguiente la hija mayor
dijo a la más joven:
–Mira, anoche dormí yo con mi padre;
hagámosle beber vino también esta
noche, vas y duermes tú con él; así tendremos
descendencia de nuestro padre.
35 Hiciéronle beber vino a su padre
también aquella noche, y la hija menor
fue y durmió con él sin que él se diera
cuenta de cuando ella se acostó ni de
cuando se levantó. 36 Así, las dos hijas de
Lot concibieron de su padre. 37 La mayor
dio a luz un hijo y le puso por nombre
Moab, pues se dijo: «Procede de mi
padre». Éste es el padre de los actuales
moabitas. 38 También la más joven
dio a luz un hijo y le puso por nombre
Amón, pues pensó: «Es hijo de mi
pueblo». Éste es el padre de los actuales
amonitas.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
Señor, ayúdame a no arrastrar mis pasos como Lot cuando me llamas a seguir adelante, ni a distraerme con la conmoción del mundo que me rodea al igual que su esposa. ¿Hay formas en las que me he quedado atascado mirando al pasado con arrepentimiento, o al presente sin esperanza? Haz que pueda mirar cada situación de mi vida a través de la lente de la fe, sabiendo que tú haces que todas las cosas sean buenas para los que te aman.
