Genesis 10
Commentary on the Book of Genesis, Chapter 10:
Chapter 9 ended by revealing there will be strife among the descendants of Noah’s three sons. Chapter 10 lists the nations born from these sons. Japheth’s family comes first, and since they do not impact biblical history, they move offstage. Ham’s descendants are a who’s who list of nations that become enemies of God’s chosen people. Ham’s son Canaan is the one from whom the Canaanites are descended, and they are the inhabitants of the land God will later promise to Abraham, a descendant of the final son of Noah, Shem. By the end of chapter 10, family relationships have been established among all the known peoples of the Ancient Near East.

Nations Descended from Noah
1 These are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem,
Ham, and Japheth; sons were
born to them after the flood.
2 The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. 3 The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. 4 The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. 5 From these the coastland peoples spread. These are the sons of Japheth n in their lands, each with his own language, by their families, in their nations.
6 The sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan. 7 The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan. 8 Cush became the father of Nimrod; he was the first on earth to be a mighty man. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, and Accad, all of them in the land of Shinar. 11 From that land he went into Assyria, and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, and 12 Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. 13 Egypt became the father of Ludim, Anamim,
Lehabim, Naphtuhim, 14 Pathrusim, Casluhim (whence came the Philistines), and Caphtorim.
15 Canaan became the father of Sidon his first-born, and Heth, 16 and the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites, 17 the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites, 18 the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Afterward the families of the Canaanites spread abroad. 19 And the territory of the Canaanites extended from Sidon, in the direction of Gerar, as far as Gaza, and in the direction of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. 20 These are the sons of Ham, by their families, their languages, their lands, and their nations.
21 To Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, children were born. 22 The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram. 23 The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. 24 Arpachshad became the father of Shelah; and Shelah became the father of Eber. 25 To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided, and his brother’s name was Joktan. 26 Joktan became the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 Obal, Abima-el, Sheba, 29 Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan. 30 The territory in which they lived extended from Mesha in the direction of Sephar to the hill country of the east. 31 These are the sons of Shem, by their families, their languages, their lands, and their nations.
32 These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, in their nations; and from these the nations spread abroad on the earth after the flood.

10 1 Ésta es la descendencia de los hijos
de Noé, Sem, Cam y Jafet, a
quienes les nacieron hijos después del
diluvio:
2 Hijos de Jafet: Gómer, Magog, Maday,
Yaván, Tubal, Mésec y Tirás. 3 Hijos
de Gómer: Ascanaz, Rifat y Togarmá.
4 Hijos de Yaván: Elisá, Tarsis, Quitim
y Dodanim. 5 Sus descendientes fueron
poblando las islas de los gentiles en sus
diversos países, cada uno en su nación
según su lengua y linaje.
6 Hijos de Cam: Cus, Misraim, Put y
Canaán. 7 Hijos de Cus: Sebá, Javilá, Sabtá,
Ramá y Sabtecá. Hijos de Ramá:
Sabá y Dedán.
8 Cus engendró a Nimrod, que fue el
primero que alcanzó fama de aguerrido
en la tierra. 9 Él fue un aguerrido cazador
delante del Señor. Por eso se suele
decir: «Como Nimrod, aguerrido cazador
delante del Señor». 10 Al principio
formaban parte de su reino Babel, Érec,
Acad y Calné, en el país de Sinar. 11 De
este país salió Asur, que edificó Nínive,
Rejobot–Ir, Cálaj 12 y Resen, entre Nínive
y Cálaj: aquélla es la gran ciudad.
13 Misraim engendró a los luditas,
anamitas, lehabitas, naftujitas, 14 patrusitas,
caslujitas y caftoritas, de donde proceden
los filisteos.
15 Canaán engendró a Sidón, su primogénito,
y a Het; 16 al jebuseo, al amorreo
y al guirgaseo, 17 al jeveo, al arqueo
y al sineo; 18 al arvadeo, al semareo y al
jamateo. Más tarde se dispersaron las
estirpes cananeas. 19 El territorio de los
cananeos abarcaba desde Sidón, en dirección
a Guerar, hasta Gaza; y en dirección
a Sodoma, Gomorra, Admá y Seboim,
hasta Lasa.
20 Hasta aquí, los hijos de Cam, según
sus linajes y lenguas, por sus países
y naciones.
21 También le nacieron hijos a Sem,
antepasado de todos los hijos de Éber
y hermano mayor de Jafet. 22 Hijos de
Sem: Elam, Asur, Arpacsad, Lud y
Aram. 23 Hijos de Aram: Us, Jul, Guéter
y Mas.
Arpacsad engendró a Sélaj, y Sélaj
engendró a Éber. 25 A Éber le nacieron
dos hijos: uno se llamaba Péleg porque
en sus días se dividió la tierra; su hermano
se llamaba Yoctán. 26 Yoctán engendró
a Almodad, Sélef, Jesarmávet, Yéraj,
27 Adoram, Uzal, Diclá, 28 Obal, Abimael,
Sebá, 29 Ofir, Javilá y Yobab. Todos estos
fueron los hijos de Yoctán. 30 Ellos habitaron
desde Mesá, en dirección a Sefar,
hasta los montes de oriente.
31 Hasta aquí, los hijos de Sem, según
sus linajes y lenguas, por sus países
y naciones.
32 Éstos son los linajes de los hijos de
Noé, según sus genealogías y naciones.
A partir de ellos se extendieron los pueblos
por la tierra después del diluvio
