Commentary on the Letter of St. Paul to the Galatians, Chapter 3:
After warning the churches of Galatia about straying from the true gospel of Jesus Christ (Ch 1) and sharing how this gospel came to be revealed to him as true (Ch 2), Paul now dives into the theology of the gospel message of salvation in Jesus. Paul’s first line of appeal is to the believers’ experiences of the Holy Spirit. He challenges them to remember, “Did you receive the Spirit by works of the [Torah] law, or by hearing with faith?” (vs .2). The sending of the Spirit is a gift, not something that the followers of Jesus in Galatia earned--and so too is the on-going justification and redemption in Christ Jesus (vs. 11-13), an unearned gift, through faith. Paul also makes his appeal through the example of Abraham, who received his righteousness or justification due to belief, not Torah Law or circumcision (vs. 6). Paul concludes by explaining that the Law was like a temporary “custodian” or “legal guardian” of a child (vs. 25), but now, through baptism all believers are in Christ, true heirs and children of God the Father (vs. 26-29).

Law or Faith
O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law, or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun with the Spirit, are you now ending with the flesh? 4 Did you experience so many things in vain?—if it really is in vain. 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith?
6 Thus Abraham “believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.” 7 So you see that it is men of faith who are the sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So then, those who are men of faith are blessed with Abraham who had faith.
10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be every one who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no man is justified before God by the law; for “He who through faith is righteous shall live”; 12 but the law does not rest on faith, for “He who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed be every one who hangs on a tree”—14 that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
The Promise to Abraham
15 To give a human example, brethren: no one annuls even a man’s will, or adds to it, once it has been ratified. 16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offspring,” referring to many; but, referring to one, “And to your offspring,” which is Christ. 17 This is what I mean: the law, which came four hundred and thirty years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void. 18 For if the inheritance is by the law, it is no longer by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise.
The Purpose of the Law
19 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made; and it was ordained by angels through an intermediary. 20 Now an intermediary implies more than one; but God is one.
21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not; for if a law had been given which could make alive, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 22 But the Scripture consigned all things to sin, that what was promised to faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
23 Now before faith came, we were confined under the law, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. 24 So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.

1 ¡Oh gálatas insensatos! ¿Quién os fascinó
a vosotros, que habéis tenido ante
los ojos a Jesucristo en la cruz?
2 Sólo quiero saber de vosotros esto:
¿habéis recibido el Espíritu por las obras
de la Ley o por la obediencia a la fe?
3 ¿Tan insensatos sois? Habéis empezado
con el Espíritu, ¿y acabáis ahora en
la carne? 4 ¿En vano habéis vivido cosas
tan grandes? ¡Bien en vano sería! 5 Ahora
bien, el que os comunica el Espíritu
y obra milagros entre vosotros ¿lo hace
por virtud de las obras de la Ley o por la
obediencia a la fe?
6 Así, Abrahán creyó a Dios, y le fue
contado como justicia. 7 Por tanto, daos
cuenta de que quienes viven de la fe,
ésos son hijos de Abrahán. 8 La Escritura,
previendo que Dios justificaría a los
gentiles por la fe, anunció de antemano
a Abrahán: En ti serán bendecidas todas
las naciones. 9 Así pues, los que viven de
la fe son bendecidos con el fiel Abrahán.
10 Porque todos los que se apoyan en las
obras de la Ley están sujetos a maldición,
pues está escrito: Maldito todo el
que no persevere en el cumplimiento de
todo lo que está escrito en el libro de la
Ley. 11 Porque está claro que nadie es
justificado delante de Dios en virtud
de la Ley, ya que el justo vivirá de la fe;
12 pero la Ley no se funda en la fe, sino
que quien cumpla sus preceptos vivirá
por ellos. 13 Cristo nos rescató de la maldición
de la Ley, haciéndose maldición
por nosotros, pues está escrito: Maldito
todo el que esté colgado de un madero,
14 para que la bendición de Abrahán llegase
a los gentiles en Cristo Jesús, a fin
de que por medio de la fe recibiésemos
la promesa del Espíritu.
15 Hermanos, voy a utilizar un razonamiento
humano: nadie anula ni puede
añadir nada a un testamento legalmente
reconocido, a pesar de ser de un
hombre. 16 Pues bien, las promesas fueron
hechas a Abrahán y a su descendencia.
No dice: «Y a los descendientes»,
como si hablara de muchos, sino de uno
solo: Y a tu descendencia, que es Cristo.
17 Con esto quiero decir: el testamento
establecido antes por Dios con la forma
debida, no lo invalida la Ley, otorgada
cuatrocientos treinta años después, de
modo que la promesa quede anulada.
18 Porque si la herencia viene de la Ley,
entonces no viene de la promesa; sin
embargo, Dios se la concedió gratuitamente
a Abrahán por medio de la promesa.
19 ¿Para qué entonces la Ley? Fue añadida
pensando en las transgresiones, hasta
que viniese la descendencia a quien iba
dirigida la promesa, Ley que fue promulgada
por medio de ángeles con intervención
de un mediador.
20 Ahora bien, donde actúa uno solo
no cabe mediador, y Dios es uno solo.
21 Luego, ¿la Ley va en contra de las promesas
de Dios? ¡De ninguna manera!
Pues si se hubiera dado una ley capaz
de vivificar, entonces la justicia vendría
realmente de la Ley. 22 Pero la Escritura
encerró todas las cosas bajo el pecado,
para que la promesa fuese dada a los
creyentes por la fe en Jesucristo.
23 Antes de que llegara la fe, estábamos
bajo la custodia de la Ley, encerrados
en espera de la fe que debía ser revelada.
24 Por consiguiente, la Ley ha sido
nuestro pedagogo, que nos condujo a
Cristo, para que fuéramos justificados
por la fe; 25 pero cuando ha llegado la fe,
ya no estamos sujetos al pedagogo.
26 En efecto, todos sois hijos de Dios
por medio de la fe en Cristo Jesús. 27 Porque
todos los que fuisteis bautizados
en Cristo os habéis revestido de Cristo.
28 Ya no hay diferencia entre judío y
griego, ni entre esclavo y libre, ni entre
varón y mujer, porque todos vosotros
sois uno solo en Cristo Jesús. 29 Si vosotros
sois de Cristo, sois también descendencia
de Abrahán, herederos según la
promesa.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
"porque en Cristo Jesús todos son hijos de Dios por la fe". (Gálatas 3:26) Soy hijo o hija de Dios. Señor, ayúdame a meditar sobre cuánto me amas como tu hijo/hija.
