Commentary on the Book of Exodus, Chapter 8:
Despite the first plague, Pharaoh refuses to let God’s people go for a week to worship their God, so the Lord strikes His second blow against Egypt and frogs swarm the land. Pharaoh’s magicians are able to replicate the event, which only exacerbates the problem! Pharaoh is ready to relent, but only if the Lord removes the frogs. God grants Pharaoh’s request at the exact time Pharoah indicated. Once freed of the frog problem, however, Pharaoh retracts his agreement. In response, the Lord, without warning, brings gnats to the land. Pharaoh’s magicians cannot replicate this miracle and they attribute it to God. The fourth plague of flies in some ways mirrors the first (Exodus 7:14-24) with a morning meeting, a plea, a warning, and a desire for Pharaoh to know the Lord. What is different in this plague and going forward is that the region of Goshen, where the Hebrews live, is not affected. This more obviously demonstrates the Lord’s power in protecting His own people as He battles with Pharoah. Pharaoh offers to let the people go worship, but, once again, when the plague is lifted, he hardens his heart and refuses to keep his word.
The Second Plague: Frogs
1 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Let my people go, that they may serve me. 2 But if you refuse to let them go, behold, I will plague all your country with frogs; 3 the Nile shall swarm with frogs which shall come up into your house, and into your bedchamber and on your bed, and into the houses of your servants and of your people, and into your ovens and your kneading bowls; 4 the frogs shall come up on you and on your people and on all your servants.” ’ ” 5 And the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your rod over the rivers, over the canals, and over the pools, and cause frogs to come upon the land of Egypt!’ ” 6 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt; and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. 7 But the magicians did the same by their secret arts, and brought frogs upon the land of Egypt.
8 Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron, and said, “Entreat the Lord to take away the frogs from me and from my people; and I will let the people go to sacrifice to the Lord.” 9 Moses said to Pharaoh, “Be pleased to command me when I am to entreat, for you and for your servants and for your people, that the frogs be destroyed from you and your houses and be left only in the Nile.” 10 And he said, “Tomorrow.” Moses said, “Be it as you say, that you may know that there is no one like the Lord our God. 11 The frogs shall depart from you and your houses and your servants and your people; they shall be left only in the Nile.” 12 So Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh; and Moses cried to the Lord concerning the frogs, as he had agreed with Pharaoh. 13 And the Lord did according to the word of Moses; the frogs died out of the houses and courtyards and out of the fields. 14 And they gathered them together in heaps, and the land stank. 15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was a respite, he hardened his heart, and would not listen to them; as the Lord had said.
The Third Plague: Gnats
16 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your rod and strike the dust of the earth, that it may become gnats throughout all the land of Egypt.’” 17 And they did so; Aar- on stretched out his hand with his rod, and struck the dust of the earth, and there came gnats on man and beast; all the dust of the earth became gnats throughout all the land of Egypt. 18 The magicians tried by their secret arts to bring forth gnats, but they could not. So there were gnats on man and beast. 19 And the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them; as the Lord had said.
The Fourth Plague: Swarms of Flies
20 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Rise up early in the morning and wait for Pharaoh, as he goes out to the water, and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Let my people go, that they may serve me. 21 Else, if you will not let my people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and your servants and your people, and into your houses; and the houses of the Egyptians shall be filled with swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they stand. 22 But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where my people dwell, so that no swarms of flies shall be there; that you may know that I am the Lord in the midst of the earth. 23 Thus I will put a division between my people and your people. By tomorrow shall this sign be.” ’ ” 24 And the Lord did so; there came great swarms of flies into the house of Pharaoh and into his servants’ houses, and in all the land of Egypt the land was ruined by reason of the flies.
25 Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron, and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God within the land.” 26 But Moses said, “It would not be right to do so; for we shall sacrifice to the Lord our God offerings abominable to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice offerings abominable to the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not stone us? 27 We must go three days’ journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord our God as he will command us.” 28 So Pharaoh said, “I will let you go, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away. Make entreaty for me.” 29 Then Moses said, “Behold, I am going out from you and I will pray to the Lord that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, tomorrow; only let not Pharaoh deal falsely again by not letting the people go to sacrifice to the Lord.” 30 So Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord. 31 And the Lord did as Moses asked, and removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people; not one remained. 32 But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also, and did not let the people go.

–Di a Aarón: «Extiende tu mano
con el bastón sobre los canales, los ríos
y los estanques, y haz que las ranas surjan
sobre el país de Egipto».
2 Aarón extendió la mano sobre las
aguas de Egipto, y subieron las ranas e
invadieron el país de Egipto. 3 Pero los
hechiceros de Egipto hicieron lo mismo
con sus encantamientos; e hicieron surgir
ranas por el país de Egipto. 4 El Faraón
llamó a Moisés y a Aarón y les dijo:
–Pedid al Señor que aleje de mí y de
mi pueblo las ranas y dejaré salir al pueblo
para que ofrezca sacrificios al Señor.
5 Respondió Moisés al Faraón:
–Indícame cuándo he de pedir por
ti, por tus siervos y por tu pueblo para
alejar las ranas de ti y de tu casa, y que
queden solamente en el Nilo.
6 Y contestó:
–Mañana.Entonces dijo el Señor a Moisés:
–Mira, yo te hago como un dios
ante el Faraón; Aarón, tu hermano, será
tu profeta. 2 Tú le transmitirás todo lo
que yo te ordene y Aarón, tu hermano,
le hablará al Faraón para que deje salir
de su país a los hijos de Israel. 3 Yo endureceré
el corazón del Faraón, pero
multiplicaré mis signos y prodigios en
el país de Egipto. 4 El Faraón no os escuchará,
pero yo extenderé mi mano contra
Egipto y sacaré del país de Egipto a
mis ejércitos, a mi pueblo, los hijos de
Israel, mediante severos castigos. 5 Y así
Egipto sabrá que yo soy el Señor, cuando
extienda mi mano contra Egipto y saque
a los hijos de Israel de en medio de ellos.
6 Moisés y Aarón así lo hicieron;
como el Señor les había ordenado, lo
hicieron. 7 Cuando hablaron al Faraón,
Moisés tenía ochenta años y Aarón
ochenta y tres.
8 Habló el Señor a Moisés y a Aarón
diciendo:
9 –Cuando el Faraón os diga: «Haced
algún prodigio que os acredite», tú dirás
a Aarón: «Toma tu bastón y arrójalo
ante el Faraón»; y se convertirá en una
serpiente.
10 Moisés y Aarón llegaron ante el Faraón
e hicieron tal como les había mandado
el Señor: Aarón arrojó su bastón
delante del Faraón y de sus servidores,
Moisés replicó:
–Se hará como dices, para que sepas
que no hay otro como el Señor, nuestro
Dios. 7 Las ranas se alejarán de ti, de tu
casa, de tus siervos y de tu pueblo; y se
quedarán solamente en el Nilo.
8 Salieron, pues, Moisés y Aarón de
la presencia del Faraón. Moisés invocó
al Señor por lo de las ranas como había
convenido con el Faraón. 9 El Señor
hizo lo que Moisés pedía; y murieron
las ranas de las casas, de los patios y de
los campos. 10 Las recogieron en grandes
montones, de modo que el país quedó
apestado. 11 Pero el Faraón, al ver que
había un respiro, endureció su corazón
y no les escuchó, como había predicho
el Señor.
12 Dijo después el Señor a Moisés:
–Di a Aarón: «Extiende tu bastón y
golpea el polvo de la tierra y se convertirá
en mosquitos sobre todo el país de
Egipto».
13 Así lo hicieron. Aarón extendió su
mano con el bastón, golpeó el polvo de
la tierra y se convirtió en mosquitos sobre
los hombres y los animales; todo el
polvo de la tierra se convirtió en mosquitos
sobre todo el país de Egipto.
14 Los hechiceros intentaron igualmente
hacer salir mosquitos con sus encantamientos,
pero no pudieron. Hubo,
pues, mosquitos sobre los hombres y los
animales.
15 Los hechiceros dijeron al Faraón:
–Es el dedo de Dios.
Pero el Faraón endureció su corazón
y no les escuchó, como había predicho
el Señor.
16 Dijo después el Señor a Moisés:
–Levántate temprano y preséntate
al Faraón. Cuando salga hacia el río, le
dirás: «Así dice el Señor: Deja salir a mi
pueblo para que me dé culto. 17 Si tú no
dejas salir a mi pueblo, yo haré salir tábanos
contra ti, contra tus siervos, contra
tu pueblo y contra tu casa; se llenarán
de tábanos las casas de los egipcios
y hasta el suelo que pisan. 18 Pero exceptuaré
en ese día el país de Gosen donde
habita mi pueblo, de suerte que allí
no habrá tábanos para que sepas que
yo soy el Señor en medio de la tierra.
19 Haré así distinción entre mi pueblo
y tu pueblo; mañana mismo sucederá
este signo».
20 El Señor lo cumplió: una enorme
cantidad de tábanos sobrevino sobre la
casa del Faraón, sobre sus siervos y sobre
todo el país de Egipto; y el país quedó
infestado de tábanos.
21 Llamó entonces el Faraón a Moisés
y a Aarón y les dijo:
–Id y ofreced sacrificios a vuestro
Dios, dentro de mi país.
22 Pero Moisés respondió:
–No es posible hacerlo; porque el
sacrificio que ofrecemos al Señor, nuestro
Dios, es abominable a los egipcios;
y si ofrecemos ante sus ojos los sacrificios
que les son abominables, nos lapidarán.
23 Tenemos que hacer tres jornadas
de camino en el desierto y ofrecer
sacrificios al Señor, nuestro Dios, como
nos ha indicado.
24 Y dijo el Faraón:
–Os dejaré marchar para que ofrezcáis
sacrificios al Señor, vuestro Dios,
en el desierto, sólo con la condición de
que no os alejéis demasiado. Y rogad
por mí.
25 Dijo Moisés:
–En cuanto salga de tu presencia rogaré
al Señor y mañana mismo los tábanos
se alejarán del Faraón, de sus
siervos y de su pueblo, sólo con la condición
de que el Faraón no siga engañando
para impedir que el pueblo salga
a ofrecer sacrificios al Señor.
26 Salió Moisés de la presencia del Faraón
e imploró al Señor. 27 El Señor actuó
conforme a la petición de Moisés y
los tábanos se alejaron del Faraón, de
sus siervos y de su pueblo sin quedar ni
uno. 28 Pero el Faraón endureció su corazón
también esta vez y no dejó salir
al pueblo.
