Commentary on the Book of Exodus, Chapter 6:
The Lord responds to Moses’ concerns (Exodus 5:22-23) by indicating that the time has now come for Him to act on behalf of His people. In words reminiscent of His initial appearance to Moses (Exodus 3), God explains that He will force Pharaoh to drive the Hebrews from Egypt. He gives Moses words for the Hebrews which recall God’s long history with and plans for them. God’s upcoming actions will bring judgment against Egypt and will do more than simply allow the Hebrews to take a week from work to go worship. God will, in fact, lead His people out of Egypt and into the land He promised their ancestors! God’s intimacy with this generation of Hebrews is revealed, for they will know Him through these upcoming miraculous actions and not just from their family history. We are reminded of this history with a genealogy that outlines the tribal line of Levi to Aaron and Moses. We are also reminded of Moses’ continued concerns of his own ability to fulfill God’s expectations.
The Book of Exodus, Chapter 6:
1 But the Lord said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will send them out, yes, with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land.”
God Promises Deliverance
2 And God said to Moses, “I am the Lord. 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them. 4 I also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they dwelt as sojourners. 5 Moreover I have heard the groaning of the sons of Israel whom the Egyptians hold in bondage and I have remembered my covenant. 6 Say therefore to the sons of Israel, ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment, 7 and I will take you for my people, and I will be your God; and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; I will give it to you for a possession. I am the Lord.’ ” 9 Moses spoke thus to the sons of Israel; but they did not listen to Moses, because of their broken spirit and their cruel bondage.
10 And the Lord said to Moses, 11 “Go in, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the sons of Israel go out of his land.” 12 But Moses said to the Lord, “Behold, the sons of Israel have not listened to me; how then shall Pharaoh listen to me, who am a man of uncircumcised lips?” 13 But the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, and gave them a charge to the sons of Israel and to Pharaoh king of Egypt to bring the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt.
The Genealogy of Moses and Aaron
14 These are the heads of their fathers’ houses: the sons of Reuben, the first-born of Israel: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi; these are the families of Reuben. 15 The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman; these are the families of Simeon. 16 These are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, the years of the life of Levi being a hundred and thirty-seven years. 17 The sons of Gershon: Libni and Shimei, by their families. 18 The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, the years of the life of Kohath being a hundred and thirty-three years. 19 The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their generations. 20 Amram took to wife Jochebed his father’s sister and she bore him Aaron and Moses, the years of the life of Amram being one hundred and thirty-seven years. 21 The sons of Izhar: Korah, Nepheg, and Zichri. 22 And the sons of Uzziel: Mishael, Elzaphan, and Sithri. 23 Aaron took to wife Elisheba, the daughter of Amminadab and the sister of Nahshon; and she bore him Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 24 The sons of Korah: Assir, Elkanah, and Abiasaph; these are the families of the Korahites. 25 Eleazar, Aaron’s son, took to wife one of the daughters of Putiel; and she bore him Phinehas. These are the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites by their families.
26 These are the Aaron and Moses to whom the Lord said: “Bring out the sons of Israel from the land of Egypt by their hosts.” 27 It was they who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt about bringing out the sons of Israel from Egypt, this Moses and this Aaron.
Moses and Aaron Obey God’s Commands
28 On the day when the Lord spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt, 29 the Lord said to Moses, “I am the Lord; tell Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say to you.” 30 But Moses said to the Lord, “Behold, I am of uncircumcised lips; how then shall Pharaoh listen to me?”

1 Respondió el Señor a Moisés:
–Ahora verás lo que voy a hacer al
Faraón; pues obligado por mano fuerte
los dejará salir, y por mi mano fuerte incluso
los expulsará de su país.
2 Habló Dios a Moisés y le dijo:
–Yo soy el Señor. 3 Me manifesté
a Abrahán, a Isaac y a Jacob como
El–Saday, pero no les di a conocer mi
nombre, que es «Señor». 4 Y establecí
mi alianza con ellos, para darles el
país de Canaán, el país por el que peregrinaron
y en el que habitaron como
extranjeros. 5 Asimismo, he escuchado
el gemido de los hijos de Israel esclavizados
por los egipcios y he recordado
mi alianza. 6 Por eso, di a los hijos
de Israel: «Yo soy el Señor; os sacaré
de las opresiones de los egipcios, os libraré
de su servidumbre y os redimiré
con brazo extendido y grandes castigos.
7 Os constituiré en pueblo mío y
seré vuestro Dios, y sabréis que yo soy
el Señor, vuestro Dios, que os saca de
las opresiones de los egipcios. 8 Os introduciré
en la tierra que con mano alzada
juré dar a Abrahán, a Isaac y a Jacob.
Y os la daré en propiedad. Yo, el
Señor».
Moisés dijo esto a los hijos de Israel,
pero ellos no le escucharon por el desánimo
y por su pesada esclavitud.
10 El Señor habló a Moisés diciendo:
11 –Ve a decir al Faraón, rey de Egipto,
que deje salir de su tierra a los hijos
de Israel.
12 Pero Moisés replicó ante el Señor:
–Si los hijos de Israel no me escuchan,
¿cómo me va a escuchar el Faraón,
a mí que soy torpe de palabra?
13 Entonces el Señor habló a Moisés y
a Aarón y les dio instrucciones para los
hijos de Israel y para el Faraón, rey de
Egipto, a fin de sacar a los hijos de Israel
del país de Egipto. Éstos son los jefes según sus familias.
Hijos de Rubén, primogénito de
Israel: Henoc, Palú, Jesrón y Carmí; son las
familias de Rubén. 15 Hijos de Simeón: Yemuel,
Yamín, Ohad, Yaquín, Sójar y Saúl, hijo de la
cananea; son las familias de Simeón.
16 Éstos son los nombres de los hijos
de Leví, por generaciones: Guersón,
Quehat y Merarí; los años de vida de
Leví fueron ciento treinta y siete.
17 Hijos de Guersón: Libní y Semeí,
según sus familias. 18 Hijos de Quehat:
Amram, Yishar, Hebrón y Uziel; los
años de vida de Quehat fueron ciento
treinta y tres. 19 Hijos de Merarí: Majlí
y Musí. Hasta aquí las familias de Leví,
por generaciones.
20 Amram tomó por esposa a Yoquébed,
su tía, de la que le nacieron
Aarón y Moisés; los años de vida de
Amram fueron ciento treinta y siete.
21 Hijos de Yishar: Coré, Néfeg y Zicrí.
22 Hijos de Uziel: Misael, Elisafán y
Sitrí. 23 Aarón tomó por esposa a Isabel,
hija de Aminadab, y hermana de Najsón,
de la que le nacieron Nadab, Abihú,
Eleazar e Itamar. 24 Hijos de Coré: Asir,
Elcaná y Abiyasaf. Éstos forman las familias
de los coreítas.
25 Eleazar, hijo de Aarón, tomó por
esposa a una de las hijas de Putiel y de
ella le nació Pinjás.
Éstos son los jefes de los levitas según
sus familias.
26 Éstos son, Aarón y Moisés, a quienes
dijo el Señor: «Sacad a los hijos de
Israel del país de Egipto a la manera de
un ejército». 27 Ellos son los que hablaron
al Faraón, rey de Egipto para sacar
de Egipto a los hijos de Israel. Éstos son
Moisés y Aarón.
28 Ahora bien, el día que el Señor habló
a Moisés en el país de Egipto, 29 dijo
el Señor a Moisés:
–Yo soy el Señor. Di al Faraón, rey
de Egipto, todo lo que yo te diga.
30 Pero Moisés replicó ante el Señor:
–Mira, que soy torpe de palabra,
¿cómo me va a escuchar el Faraón?
