Commentary on the Book of Exodus, Chapter 28:
Having explained the physical location and materials of worship, God turns His attention to the priests who will celebrate the prescribed ritual and sacrifice. Aaron will be the first high priest, and the priesthood will be an inherited position for his sons. Like the Tabernacle and its furnishings, God focuses attention to the details regarding the quality of materials and design used in making the priestly vestments. As the high priest, Aaron will also wear a breastplate with jewels to represent the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel, a special robe called an ephod, and a special turban to remind everyone that he is holy, which means set apart, for the LORD. It is clear the priests may not be naked, which is another way to prevent the improper sexual practices of pagan cultures from infiltrating the worship of the true God.
The Book of Exodus, Chapter 28:
Holy Garments for the Priests
28 “Then bring near to you Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the sons of Israel, to serve me as priests—Aaron and Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 2 And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty. 3 And you shall speak to all who have ability, whom I have endowed with an able mind, that they make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him for my priesthood. 4 These are the garments which they shall make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a coat of checker work, a turban, and a sash; they shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother and his sons to serve me as priests.
The Ephod
5 “They shall receive gold, blue and purple and scarlet stuff, and fine twined linen. 6 And they shall make the ephod of gold, of blue and purple and scarlet stuff, and of fine twined linen, skillfully worked. 7 It shall have two shoulder-pieces attached to its two edges, that it may be joined together. 8 And the skilfully woven band upon it, to belt it on, shall be of the same workmanship and materials, of gold, blue and purple and scarlet stuff, and fine twined linen. 9 And you shall take two onyx stones, and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel, 10 six of their names on the one stone, and the names of the remaining six on the other stone, in the order of their birth. 11 As a jeweler engraves signets, so shall you engrave the two stones with the names of the sons of Israel; you shall enclose them in settings of gold filigree. 12 And you shall set the two stones upon the shoulder-pieces of the ephod, as stones of remembrance for the sons of Israel; and Aaron shall bear their names before the LORD upon his two shoulders for remembrance. 13 And you shall make settings of gold filigree, 14 and two chains of pure gold, twisted like cords; and you shall attach the corded chains to the settings.
The Breastpiece of Judgment
15 “And you shall make a breastpiece of judgment, in skilled work; like the work of the ephod you shall make it; of gold, blue and purple and scarlet stuff, and fine twined linen shall you make it. 16 It shall be square and double, a span its length and a span its breadth. 17 And you shall set in it four rows of stones. A row of sardius, topaz, and carbuncle shall be the first row; 18 and the second row an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond; 19 and the third row a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst; 20 and the fourth row a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper; they shall be set in gold filigree. 21 There shall be twelve stones with their names according to the names of the sons of Israel; they shall be like signets, each engraved with its name, for the twelve tribes. 22 And you shall make for the breastpiece twisted chains like cords, of pure gold; 23 and you shall make for the breastpiece two rings of gold, and put the two rings on the two edges of the breastpiece. 24 And you shall put the two cords of gold in the two rings at the edges of the breastpiece. 25 the two ends of the two cords you shall attach to the two settings of filigree, and so attach it in front to the shoulder-pieces of the ephod. 26 And you shall make two rings of gold, and put them at the two ends of the breastpiece, on its inside edge next to the ephod. 27 And you shall make two rings of gold, and attach them in front to the lower part of the two shoulder-pieces of the ephod, at its joining above the skillfully woven band of the ephod. 28 And they shall bind the breastpiece by its rings to the rings of the ephod with a lace of blue, that it may lie upon the skillfully woven band of the ephod, and that the breastpiece shall not come loose from the ephod. 29 So Aaron shall bear the names of the sons of Israel in the breastpiece of judgment upon his heart, when he goes into the holy place, to bring them to continual remembrance before the LORD. 30 And in the breastpiece of judgment you shall put the Urim and the Thummim, and they shall be upon Aaron’s heart, when he goes in before the LORD; thus Aaron shall bear the judgment of the sons of Israel upon his heart before the LORD continually.
The Robe of the Ephod
31 “And you shall make the robe of the ephod all of blue. 32 It shall have in it an opening for the head, with a woven binding around the opening, like the opening in a garment, that it may not be torn. 33 On its skirts you shall make pomegranates of blue and purple and scarlet stuff, around its skirts, with bells of gold between them, 34 a golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, round about on the skirts of the robe. 35 And it shall be upon Aaron when he ministers, and its sound shall be heard when he goes into the holy place before the LORD, and when he comes out, lest he die.
Other Priestly Garments
36 “And you shall make a plate of pure gold, and engrave on it, like the engraving of a signet, ‘Holy to the LORD.’ 37 And you shall fasten it on the turban by a lace of blue; it shall be on the front of the turban. 38 It shall be upon Aaron’s forehead, and Aaron shall take upon himself any guilt incurred in the holy offering which the sons of Israel hallow as their holy gifts; it shall always be upon his forehead, that they may be accepted before the LORD.
39 “And you shall weave the coat in checker work of fine linen, and you shall make a turban of fine linen, and you shall make a sash embroidered with needlework.
40 “And for Aaron’s sons you shall make coats and sashes and caps; you shall make them for glory and beauty. 41 And you shall put them upon Aaron your brother, and upon his sons with him, and shall anoint them and ordain them and consecrate them, that they may serve me as priests. 42 And you shall make for them linen breeches to cover their naked flesh; from the loins to the thighs they shall reach; 43 and they shall be upon Aaron, and upon his sons, when they go into the tent of meeting, or when they come near the altar to minister in the holy place; lest they bring guilt upon themselves and die. This shall be a perpetual statute for him and for his descendants after him.

»Haz venir junto a ti de entre los
hijos de Israel a Aarón, tu hermano,
y a sus hijos para que ejerzan mi
sacerdocio: Aarón, Nadab, Abihú e Itamar,
hijos de Aarón. 2 Harás vestiduras
sagradas para Aarón, tu hermano, que
expresen su gloria y esplendor. 3 Hablarás
con todos los artistas a quienes he
colmado de espíritu de sabiduría, y ellos
confeccionarán las vestiduras de Aarón
para que oficie el sacerdocio en mi honor.
4 ȃstas son las vestiduras que han
de hacer: un pectoral, un efod, un manto,
una túnica bordada a cuadros, una
tiara y una faja. Confeccionarán, pues,
para Aarón, tu hermano, y para sus hijos,
vestiduras sagradas para que oficien
mi sacerdocio. 5 Se empleará oro, púrpura
violácea, púrpura escarlata y carmesí,
y lino fino.
6 »El efod lo confeccionarán con oro,
púrpura violácea, púrpura escarlata y
carmesí, y lino torzal, artísticamente
bordado. 7 Llevará dos hombreras para
unir el efod en sus extremos. 8 El cinto,
para ceñirlo por encima, formará una
sola pieza con él y será del mismo tejido:
oro, púrpura violácea, púrpura escarlata
y carmesí, y lino torzal.
9 »Tomarás dos piedras de ónice y
grabarás sobre ellas los nombres de los
hijos de Israel: 10 seis nombres en una
piedra y seis en la otra, según el orden
de nacimiento. 11 Las tallarás como se
tallan las piedras preciosas, grabarás los
nombres de los hijos de Israel como se
graban los sellos, y las encajarás en engarces
de oro. 12 Pondrás las dos piedras
en las dos hombreras del efod, como
piedras de memorial para los hijos de
Israel. Así llevará Aarón sus nombres
sobre las dos hombreras como memorial
ante el Señor. 13 Harás engarces de
oro, 14 y dos cadenillas de oro puro, trenzadas
en forma de cordón; y las fijarás
en los engarces.
15 »Harás también el pectoral del juicio;
lo harás artísticamente bordado
como el efod: con oro, púrpura violácea,
púrpura escarlata y carmesí, y lino
torzal. 16 Será cuadrado y doble; de un
palmo de largo y uno de ancho. 17 Lo
adornarás con piedras preciosas, colocadas
en cuatro filas: en la primera fila
una sardónice, un topacio y una esmeralda;
18 en la segunda, un rubí, un zafiro
y un diamante; 19 en la tercera, un ópalo,
una ágata y una amatista; 20 y en la cuarta
fila, un crisólito, un ónice y un jaspe.
Todas ellas irán encajadas en engarces
de oro. 21 Las piedras serán doce como
doce son los nombres de los hijos de Israel.
Cada una llevará grabado, como se
graban los sellos, el nombre de una de
las doce tribus.
22 »Harás para el pectoral cadenillas
de oro puro, trenzadas a modo de cordones,
23 y dos anillas de oro que pondrás
en los dos extremos del pectoral.
24 Pasarás los dos cordones de oro por las
dos anillas de los extremos del pectoral,
25 y los dos extremos de los cordones los
unirás a los dos engarces y los fijarás en
la parte delantera de las hombreras del
efod. 26 Harás otras dos anillas de oro y
las fijarás en los extremos inferiores del
pectoral, en el borde interior que toca
con el efod. 27 Harás otras dos anillas de
oro y las fijarás en la parte inferior de las
hombreras del efod, por delante, cerca
de la juntura, por encima del cinto del
efod. 28 Se unirá el pectoral por sus anillas
a las del efod con un cordón de púrpura
violácea, de modo que el pectoral
quede sobre el cinto del efod y no pueda
desprenderse de él.
29 »Aarón llevará los nombres de los
hijos de Israel en el pectoral del juicio
sobre su corazón cuando entre en
el santuario, como memorial perpetuo
ante el Señor. 30 Pondrás en el efod del
juicio los urim y los tummim para que
estén sobre el corazón de Aarón cuando
entre a la presencia del Señor. Así Aarón
llevará constantemente sobre el corazón
el juicio del Señor acerca de los
hijos de Israel, cuando esté en la presencia
del Señor.
Confeccionarás el manto del efod,
todo él de púrpura violácea. 32 Tendrá
en el centro una abertura para la cabeza; la
abertura irá reforzada alrededor con un dobladillo,
como el de las orlas, para que no
se rasgue. 33 En la parte inferior, en todo el
vuelo del manto, pondrás granadas de púrpura
violácea y púrpura escarlata y carmesí,
y lino torzal; y entre ellas, también alrededor,
campanillas de oro, 34 alternando
una campanilla de oro y una granada por
todo el vuelo del manto.
Aarón se revestirá con él al oficiar;
de este modo se oirá el tintineo
al entrar en el santuario, en la presencia
del Señor, y también al salir. Así no
morirá.
36 »Fundirás una lámina de oro puro
y grabarás, como se graba un sello, lo
siguiente: «Consagrado al Señor». 37 La
sujetarás con un cordón de púrpura
violácea, colocándola sobre la tiara, en
la parte delantera. 38 Estará, pues, sobre
la frente de Aarón; así Aarón será portador
de las culpas contra las cosas santas
que los hijos de Israel puedan cometer
al ofrecer los dones sagrados. La
llevará siempre sobre la frente para que
sean agradables ante el Señor. 39 La túnica
será de lino fino así como la tiara; el
cinto estará artísticamente recamado.
40 »Para los hijos de Aarón confeccionarás
túnicas y cinturones; y les prepararás
tiaras que expresen su gloria y
esplendor. 41 Con estas vestiduras revestirás
a Aarón, tu hermano, y a sus hijos;
los ungirás, los investirás y los santificarás
para que sean sacerdotes en mi
honor. 42 Les harás también calzones de
lino para cubrir su desnudez desde la
cintura a los muslos.
43 »Aarón y sus hijos los llevarán
puestos cuando entren en la Tienda de
la Reunión o cuando se acerquen al altar
para ser ministros en el Santo. Así no
incurrirán en culpa y no morirán.
»Es ley perpetua para Aarón y para
sus generaciones.
