Commentary on the Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 7:
As the Holy Spirit compels the Church forward in evangelizing, challenges continue! Because of Stephen’s outreach to the ethnic minority Hellenist Jews, he is accused of changing “the customs which Moses delivered to us” (6:11-14). Yet every challenge brings a new opportunity for God to work through the Church, and Stephen is able to preach a sermon on God’s plan of salvation to the Sanhedrin (vs. 2-53). Stephen shows that God’s plan, as seen from Abraham to Moses, was always intended to be universal and rejection by some “religious insiders” is nothing new. Stephen is killed, stoned by religious vigilantes (vs. 57-58), and dies as Jesus did, offering forgiveness (vs. 60).

Stephen’s Speech to the Council
1 And the high priest said, “Is this so?” 2 And Stephen said: “Brethren and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, 3 and said to him, ‘Depart from your land and from your kindred and go into the land which I will show you.’ 4 Then he departed from the land of the Chaldeans, and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living; 5 yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot’s length, but promised to give it to him in possession and to his posterity after him, though he had no child. 6 And God spoke to this effect, that his posterity would be aliens in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and illtreat them four hundred years. 7 ‘But I will judge the nation which they serve,’ said God, ‘and after that they shall come out and worship me in this place.’ 8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.
9 “And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him, 10 and rescued him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him governor over Egypt and over all his household. 11 Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food. 12 But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent forth our fathers the first time. 13 And at the second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family be came known to Pharaoh. 14 And Joseph sent and called to him Jacob his father and all his kindred, seventy-five souls; 15 and Jacob went down into Egypt. And he died, himself and our fathers, 16 and they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.
17 “But as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt 18 till there arose over Egypt another king who had not known Joseph. 19 He dealt craft ily with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, that they might not be kept alive. 20 At this time Moses was born, and was beautiful before God. And he was brought up for three months in his father’s house; 21 and when he was exposed, Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son. 22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.
23 “When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the sons of Israel. 24 And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking the Egyptian. 25 He supposed that his brethren understood that God was giving them deliverance by his hand, but they did not understand. 26 And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and would have reconciled them, saying, ‘Men, you are brethren, why do you wrong each other?’ 27 But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? 28 Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yester day?’ 29 At this retort Moses fled, and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.
30 “Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush. 31 When Moses saw it he wondered at the sight; and as he drew near to look, the voice of the Lord came, 32 ‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and did not dare to look. 33 And the Lord said to him, ‘Take off the shoes from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. 34 I have surely seen the ill-treatment of my people that are in Egypt and heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.’
35 “This Moses whom they refused, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ God sent as both ruler and deliverer by the hand of the angel that appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out, having performed wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for for ty years. 37 This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet from your brethren as he raised me up.’ 38 This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers; and he received living oracles to give to us. 39 Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt, 40 saying to Aaron, ‘Make for us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and rejoiced in the works of their hands. 42 But God turned and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets:
‘Did you offer to me slain
beasts and sacrifices,
forty years in the wilderness,
O house of Israel?
43 And you took up the tent of Moloch,
and the star of the god Rephan,
the figures which you made to
worship;
and I will remove you beyond Babylon.’
44 “Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen. 45 Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations which God thrust out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David, 46 who found favor in the sight of God and asked leave to find a habitation for the God of Jacob. 47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him. 48 Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made with hands; as the prophet says, 49 ‘Heaven is my throne, and earth my footstool.
What house will you build for me, says the Lord,
or what is the place of my rest?
50 Did not my hand make all these things?’
51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”
The Stoning of Stephen
54 Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth against him. 55 But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; 56 and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God.” 57 But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together upon him. 58 Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And as they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 And he knelt down and cried with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

–¿Es esto así?
2 Él respondió:
–Hermanos y padres, escuchad: el
Dios de la gloria se apareció a nuestro
padre Abrahán cuando estaba en Mesopotamia,
antes de que habitase en Jarán,
3 y le dijo: «Sal de tu tierra y de tu
familia y vete a la tierra que te mostraré
». 4 Entonces salió de la tierra de los
caldeos y habitó en Jarán. De allí, después
de morir su padre, Dios lo trasladó
a esta tierra en la que vosotros habitáis
ahora. 5 No le dio en ella heredad, ni
siquiera el espacio de un pie, sino que
prometió dársela en posesión a él y, aunque
no tenía hijos, a su descendencia
después de él. 6 Dios le habló así: Tus descendientes
morarán en tierra extranjera,
y los esclavizarán y maltratarán durante
cuatrocientos años. 7 También dijo Dios:
Yo juzgaré a las naciones de las que han
sido esclavos, y después saldrán y me darán
culto en este lugar. 8 Entonces le dio
la alianza de la circuncisión; y así, cuando
engendró a Isaac, le circuncidó al octavo
día, e Isaac a Jacob, y Jacob a los
doce patriarcas. 9 Los patriarcas, envidiosos
de José, lo vendieron con destino
a Egipto; pero Dios estaba con él, 10 y
le libró de todas sus tribulaciones, y le
dio gracia y sabiduría ante el Faraón rey
de Egipto, que lo constituyó gobernador
de Egipto y de toda su casa. 11 Vino luego
hambre y gran tribulación sobre todo
Egipto y Canaán, y nuestros padres no
encontraban alimento. 12 Oyó Jacob que
había trigo en Egipto y envió a nuestros
padres una primera vez; 13 en la segunda,
José se dio a conocer a sus hermanos, y
así llegó a conocimiento del Faraón el linaje
de José. 14 Éste envió a buscar a su
padre Jacob y a toda su familia, que eran
setenta y cinco personas. 15 Jacob bajó a
Egipto, donde murieron él y nuestros
padres. 16 Y fueron trasladados a Siquén
y colocados en el sepulcro que compró
Abrahán a precio de plata a los hijos de
Hemmor, en Siquén.
17 »Conforme se acercaba el tiempo
de la promesa que Dios había jurado a
Abrahán, el pueblo creció y se multiplicó
en Egipto, 18 hasta que se alzó sobre
Egipto otro rey que no conocía a José.
19 Usando de malas artes contra nuestra
gente, este rey maltrató a nuestros padres
para que abandonaran a sus hijos,
de modo que no sobreviviesen. 20 En
este tiempo nació Moisés, que era grato
a Dios; fue criado durante tres meses
en la casa de su padre; 21 y al ser abandonado
lo recogió la hija del Faraón
y lo crió como hijo suyo. 22 Moisés fue
educado según toda la sabiduría de los
egipcios, y era poderoso en palabras y
obras. 23 Cuando llegó a la edad de cuarenta
años sintió deseos de visitar a sus
hermanos, los hijos de Israel. 24 Al ver
que uno de ellos era maltratado, salió
en su defensa y vengó al oprimido matando
al egipcio. 25 Él pensaba que sus
hermanos entenderían que Dios les iba
a salvar por mediación de él; pero ellos
no lo comprendieron. 26 Al día siguiente,
se les presentó mientras reñían, e intentaba
poner paz entre ellos diciéndoles:
«¡Hombres, sois hermanos! ¿Por qué
os maltratáis?» 27 Pero el que maltrataba
a su compañero le rechazó diciendo:
¿Quién te ha nombrado jefe y juez nuestro?
28 ¿Acaso quieres matarme, lo mismo
que mataste ayer al egipcio? 29 Ante estas
palabras Moisés huyó y vivió como
extranjero en tierras de Madián, donde
tuvo dos hijos.
Después de cuarenta años se le apareció
un ángel en el desierto del monte Sinaí,
en la llama de una zarza que ardía.
31 Moisés, al verlo, se admiró de la visión,
y cuando se acercaba para mirar se
oyó la voz del Señor: 32 Yo soy el Dios de
tus padres, el Dios de Abrahán, de Isaac
y de Jacob. Moisés, asustado, no se atrevía
a mirar. 33 Entonces le dijo el Señor:
«Quítate las sandalias de tus pies, porque
el lugar en que estás es tierra santa. 34 Me
he fijado en la aflicción de mi pueblo que
está en Egipto, he escuchado su lamento
y he bajado a liberarlo. Y ahora ven, que
voy a enviarte a Egipto».
35 »A este Moisés, a quien rechazaron
diciéndole: ¿Quién te ha nombrado
jefe y juez?, Dios lo envió como jefe y
libertador por medio del ángel que se
le apareció en la zarza. 36 Él los sacó haciendo
prodigios y señales en la tierra
de Egipto, en el mar Rojo y en el desierto
durante cuarenta años. 37 Éste es
Moisés, el que les dijo a los hijos de Israel:
Dios os suscitará de entre vuestros
hermanos un profeta como yo. 38 Él es el
que estuvo en la asamblea del desierto
con el ángel que le hablaba en el monteSinaí y con nuestros padres; el que recibió
palabras de vida para entregárnoslas;
39 a quien no quisieron obedecer
nuestros padres, sino que le rechazaron
y en sus corazones se volvieron hacia
Egipto, 40 diciendo a Aarón: Haznos dioses
que vayan delante de nosotros, porque
a ese Moisés que nos sacó de la tierra
de Egipto no sabemos qué le ha ocurrido.
41 Aquellos mismos días hicieron un becerro,
sacrificaron una víctima al ídolo
y se regocijaban en las obras de sus
manos. 42 Dios se apartó de ellos y los
abandonó a dar culto al ejército del cielo,
como está escrito en el libro de los
Profetas:
¿Acaso me ofrecisteis víctimas y sacrificios
en el desierto durante cuarenta años,
casa de Israel?
43 Entonces transportasteis el tabernáculo
de Moloc
y la estrella de vuestro dios Refán,
las imágenes que forjasteis para adorarlas;
pero yo os desterré más allá de Babilonia.
44 »Nuestros padres tenían en el desierto
el Tabernáculo del Testimonio,
tal y como el que hablaba con Moisés
le había ordenado que lo hiciera según
el modelo que había visto. 45 Y después
de que fuera traspasado a nuestros
padres, lo condujeron bajo Josué en la
ocupación de la tierra de los gentiles, a
los que Dios expulsó de la presencia de
nuestros padres hasta los días de David.
46 Éste halló gracia delante de Dios y pidió
encontrar una morada para el Dios
de Jacob. 47 Pero fue Salomón quien le
edificó una casa. 48 Sin embargo, el Altísimo
no habita en casas construidas por
manos de hombre, como dice el profeta:
49 Mi trono es el cielo
y la tierra el escabel de mis pies.
¿Qué casa me edificaréis a Mí?, dice
el Señor,
¿o cuál será el sitio de mi descanso?
50 ¿No ha hecho mi mano todas estas
cosas?
»¡Duros de cerviz, incircuncisos de corazón
y de oídos! ¡Vosotros os estáis
siempre resistiendo al Espíritu Santo: como
vuestros padres así también vosotros! 52
¿A qué profeta no persiguieron vuestros
padres? Asesinaron a los que anunciaban la venida del Justo, del que ahora
vosotros habéis sido traidores y asesinos,
53 los que recibisteis la Ley por ministerio
de ángeles y no la guardasteis.
54 Al oír esto ardían de ira en sus corazones
y rechinaban los dientes contra
él. 55 Pero él, lleno del Espíritu Santo,
miró fijamente al cielo y vio la gloria
de Dios y a Jesús de pie a la diestra de
Dios, 56 y dijo:
–Mirad, veo los cielos abiertos y al
Hijo del Hombre de pie a la diestra de
Dios.
57 Entonces clamaron a voz en grito,
se taparon los oídos y se lanzaron a una
contra él. 58 Lo sacaron fuera de la ciudad
y le lapidaron. Los testigos dejaron
sus mantos a los pies de un joven llamado
Saulo, 59 y se pusieron a lapidar a Esteban,
que oraba diciendo:
–Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu.
60 Puesto de rodillas clamó con fuerte
voz:
–Señor, no les tengas en cuenta este
pecado.
Y con estas palabras murió.
1 aSaulo aprobaba su muerte.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
El diácono Esteban - "lleno de fe y del Espíritu Santo"- dio testimonio ante el Consejo de la verdad de Jesús, el "Justo", el enviado por Dios, al que crucificaron. Por dar testimonio de la verdad sobre Jesús, Esteban recibió la corona de mártir. ¿Cómo te llama Jesús a dar testimonio por amor de las verdades de nuestra fe católica, en la cultura en la que vivimos? ¡Ven Espíritu Santo!
