Commentary on the Second Book of Samuel, Chapter 13:
Over the years, David has had children from multiple wives, and whenever a man has multiple wives in the Bible, there are problems. The circumstances around David’s children explodes when the next in line for the throne, Amnon, decides he loves and wants his half-sister Tamar, whom he cannot marry. A plan is devised for Amnon to be alone with Tamar, and David, not considering the dangers of putting a virgin princess alone with a man, agrees. Tamar is raped, then shunned by Amnon. David does nothing to avenge his daughter, but her full blood brother, Absalom, is furious. He patiently waits until the right time to have Amnon killed, which also places himself next in line for the throne. Since he was responsible for the murder, however, he has to flee the country lest he be put to death as the Law allows.
The Second Book of Samuel, Chapter 13:
Amnon Defiles Tamar
1 Now Absalom, David’s son, had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar; and after a time Amnon, David’s son, loved her. 2 And Amnon was so tormented that he made himself ill because of his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin, and it seemed impossible to Amnon to do anything to her. 3 But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shime-ah, David’s brother; and Jonadab was a very crafty man. 4 And he said to him, “O son of the king, why are you so haggard morning after morning? Will you not tell me?” Amnon said to him, “I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.” 5 Jonadab said to him, “Lie down on your bed, and pretend to be ill; and when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it from her hand.’” 6 So Amnon lay down, and pretended to be ill; and when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.”
7 Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Go to your brother Amnon’s house, and prepare food for him.” 8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house, where he was lying down. And she took dough, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes. 9 And she took the pan and emptied it out before him, but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, “Send out every one from me.” So every one went out from him. 10 Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the cakes she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother. 11 But when she brought them near him to eat, he took hold of her, and said to her, “Come, lie with me, my sister.” 12 She answered him, “No, my brother, do not force me; for such a thing is not done in Israel; do not do this wanton folly. 13 As for me, where could I carry my shame? And as for you, you would be as one of the wanton fools in Israel. Now therefore, I beg you, speak to the king; for he will not withhold me from you.” 14 But he would not listen to her; and being stronger than she, he forced her, and lay with her.
15 Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred; so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Arise, be gone.” 16 But she said to him, “No, my brother; for this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other which you did to me.” But he would not listen to her. 17 He called the young man who served him and said, “Put this woman out of my presence, and bolt the door after her.” 18 Now she was wearing a long robe with sleeves; for thus were the virgin daughters of the king clad of old. So his servant put her out, and bolted the door after her. 19 And Tamar put ashes on her head, and tore the long robe which she wore; and she laid her hand on her head, and went away, crying aloud as she went.
20 And her brother Absalom said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? Now hold your peace, my sister; he is your brother; do not take this to heart.” So Tamar dwelt, a desolate woman, in her brother Absalom’s house. 21 When King David heard of all these things, he was very angry. 22 But Absalom spoke to Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.
Absalom Avenges His Sister
23 After two full years Absalom had sheepshearers at Baal-hazor, which is near Ephraim, and Absalom invited all the king’s sons. 24 And Absalom came to the king, and said, “Behold, your servant has sheepshearers; please let the king and his servants go with your servant.” 25 But the king said to Absalom, “No, my son, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome to you.” He pressed him, but he would not go but gave him his blessing. 26 Then Absalom said, “If not, please let my brother Amnon go with us.” And the king said to him, “Why should he go with you?” 27 But Absalom pressed him until he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him. 28 Then Absalom commanded his servants, “Mark when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon,’ then kill him. Fear not; have I not commanded you? Be courageous and be valiant.” 29 So the servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and each mounted his mule and fled.
30 While they were on the way, tidings came to David, “Absalom has slain all the king’s sons, and not one of them is left.” 31 Then the king arose, and tore his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants who were standing by tore their garments. 32 But Jonadab the son of Shime-ah, David’s brother, said, “Let not my lord suppose that they have killed all the young men the king’s sons, for Amnon alone is dead, for by the command of Absalom this has been determined from the day he forced his sister Tamar. 33 Now therefore let not my lord the king so take it to heart as to suppose that all the king’s sons are dead; for Amnon alone is dead.”
34 But Absalom fled. And the young man who kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold, many people were coming from the Horonaim road by the side of the mountain. 35 And Jonadab said to the king, “Behold, the king’s sons have come; as your servant said, so it has come about.” 36 And as soon as he had finished speaking, behold, the king’s sons came, and lifted up their voice and wept; and the king also and all his servants wept very bitterly.
Absalom Flees
37 But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son day after day. 38 So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there three years. 39 And the spirit of the king longed to go forth to Absalom; for he was comforted about Amnon, seeing he was dead.

1 Al cabo del tiempo, sucedió que
Absalón, hijo de David, tenía una
hermana muy hermosa llamada Tamar.
Amnón, hijo de David, se enamoró
de ella 2 y se llenó de pasión hasta el
punto de enfermar por su hermana Tamar,
porque era virgen y le parecía difícil
conseguir algo de ella. 3 Tenía Amnón
un amigo de nombre Yonadab, hijo de
Samá, hermano de David. Yonadab era
un hombre muy hábil 4 y le dijo:
–¿Por qué, hijo de rey, cada día estás
más débil? ¿No me lo vas a contar?
Amnón le respondió:
–Me he enamorado de Tamar, hermana
de mi hermano Absalón.
5 Yonadab le dijo:
–Acuéstate en tu lecho y fíngete enfermo.
Cuando tu padre venga a verte,
dile: «Que venga, por favor, Tamar, mi
hermana, a darme de comer. Que prepare
algo de comer ante mí para que yo
lo vea y lo reciba de su mano».
6 Amnón se acostó y se fingió enfermo.
El rey vino a visitarlo y le dijo Amnón:
–Que venga, por favor, Tamar, mi
hermana, que prepare ante mi vista dos
tortas para que pueda tomarlas de su
mano.
7 David mandó recado a Tamar a su
casa:
–Vete, por favor, a casa de tu hermano
Amnón y prepárale la comida.
8 Fue Tamar a casa de su hermano
Amnón que estaba acostado. Ella
tomó harina, la amasó, preparó las tortas
delante de él y las puso a freír. 9 Luego
tomó la sartén y se la puso delante, pero
él no quiso comer diciendo:
–Que salgan todos.
Y cuando habían salido todos de
allí, 10 dijo Amnón a Tamar:
–Acércame la comida a la habitación
para poder comerla de tu mano.
Tamar tomó las tortas que había
preparado y se las llevó a su hermano a
la habitación. 11 En el momento de acercarle
la comida, él la sujetó y le dijo:
–Ven, entra en mi lecho, hermana
mía.
12 Ella le contestó:
–No, hermano mío, no me fuerces
que esto no se hace en Israel: no cometas
esta infamia. 13 ¿Adónde podré
ir yo con mi deshonra? Y tú serás un
infame en Israel. Es mejor que le hables
al rey: él no se negará a entregarme
a ti.
14 Pero Amnón no quiso atender a
estas razones, sino que, como era más
fuerte, la violentó y durmió con ella.
15 Pero después sintió hacia ella un odio
grande, mucho más intenso que el amor
que antes le había tenido. Y Amnón le
dijo:
–Levántate y vete.
16 Ella le suplicaba:
–No, hermano mío, que si me expulsas,
esta maldad será peor que la primera
que cometiste conmigo.
Pero no quiso escucharla, 17 sino que
llamó a su sirviente personal y le dijo:
–Echa fuera a ésta y cierra la puerta
tras ella.
18 Tamar vestía una túnica de dos
mangas porque así vestían las hijas del
rey que todavía eran vírgenes. El servidor
personal de Amnón la echó fuera y
cerró la puerta tras ella. 19 Tamar se echó
polvo sobre su cabeza, rasgó la túnica
de dos mangas que vestía y puso las manos
sobre la cabeza, caminando y dando
gritos de un lado para otro. 20 Su hermano
Absalón le dijo:
–¿Ha estado contigo tu hermano
Amnón? Bien, hermana mía, tú por
ahora calla; es tu hermano. No se atormente
tu corazón por esto.
Tamar, muy desolada, se quedó en
casa de su hermano Absalón. 21 Cuando
el rey oyó todo esto se enfureció pero no
quiso enemistarse con su hijo Amnón;
le quería mucho por ser su primogénito.
22 Absalón no volvió a dirigir la palabra
a Amnón, ni para bien ni para mal;
pero le odiaba por haber humillado a su
hermana Tamar.
23 Dos años después, Absalón estaba
de esquileo en Baal-Jasor, cerca de
Efraím, e invitó a todos los hijos del
rey. 24 Se presentó también ante el rey y
le dijo:
–Tu siervo está de esquileo. Que el
rey y sus siervos se acerquen, por favor,
a mi casa.
25 El rey respondió a Absalón:
–No, hijo mío, no podemos ir todos
y resultarte gravosos.
Absalón insistió, pero el rey rehusó
y le bendijo. 26 Entonces Absalón le dijo:
–Si tú no vienes, permite al menos
que venga mi hermano Amnón.
El rey respondió:
–¿Por qué quieres que vaya?
27 Pero Absalón insistió y David dejó
que fueran con él Amnón y todos los hijos
del rey. Preparó Absalón un banquete
regio 28 y dio estas instrucciones a sus
servidores:
–Estad atentos y, cuando Amnón
esté alegre por el vino y yo os diga: «Herid
a Amnón», matadlo. No tengáis
miedo; soy yo quien os lo manda. Tened
valor y sed valientes.
29 Los servidores de Absalón actuaron
contra Amnón como les había
mandado. Todos los hijos del rey se levantaron,
montaron cada uno en su cabalgadura
y huyeron. 30 Estaban todavía
en camino cuando le llegó a David esta
noticia:
–Absalón ha matado a todos los hijos
del rey; no ha quedado uno solo
vivo.
31 Se levantó el rey, se rasgó las vestiduras
y se postró en tierra. Todos los
servidores que le atendían también se
rasgaron las vestiduras. 32 Sin embargo,
Yonadab, hijo de Samá, el hermano de
David, dijo:
–No piense mi señor que han matado
a todos los hijos del rey; sólo Amnón
ha muerto porque Absalón así lo tenía
decidido desde el día en que humilló
a su hermana Tamar. 33 Así que no haga
caso mi señor, el rey, de eso que dicen,
que todos los hijos del rey han sido asesinados,
porque sólo Amnón ha muerto.
34 Absalón ya había huido. El centinela
alzó los ojos y vio un gran tropel
que venía por el camino de Joronaim,
en la ladera del monte. Se acercó al rey
y le anunció:
–Veo a unos hombres por el camino
de Joronaim.
35 Entonces Yonadab dijo al rey:
–Son los hijos del rey que llegan; ha
ocurrido como tu siervo había dicho.
36 Apenas había terminado de hablar,
cuando los hijos del rey entraron llorando
a gritos. También el rey y todos sus
servidores lloraron desconsoladamente.
37 Absalón huyó, se refugió junto a
Talmay, hijo de Amihud, rey de Guesur.
En cambio, el rey lloraba día tras día
por su hijo. 38 Absalón en su huida llegó
a Guesur y estuvo allí durante tres años.
39 El rey David cesó en su actitud contra
Absalón a medida que iba consolándose
de la muerte de Amnón.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
La lujuria, el engaño, el incesto, el rechazo despiadado, un asesinato astutamente planeado para eliminar un obstáculo al trono. David acepta los castigos por estos pecados como si vinieran de Dios. Señor, ¿cómo reconozco los obstáculos en mi vida como parte de tu plan para lograr una mayor confianza y unidad?
