Commentary on the First Letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians, Chapter 4:
Paul, Silvannus, and Timothy provide practical and doctrinal teachings to help fill in the gaps and new questions in the faith of the Church in Thessalonica. They encourage them that God is showing them how to love one another and they are responding, pleasing God and pursuing holiness (vs. 9-10, 1, 7). Then, Paul and his co-missionaries answer a question of doctrine--what happens to those who experience earthly death before Jesus’ second coming? (vs. 13-14). Paul, Silvannus, and Timothy assure them that both the living and the dead in Christ will be reunited at “coming of the Lord” (vs. 15, 17). In Greek, it’s the term “parousia” which describes a triumphant royal visit or the arrival of a great dignitary. This is to be a “comfort” (vs. 18) not an anxiety over “when” the parousia will happen (5:1).

A Life Pleasing to God
1 Finally, brethren, we beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you learned from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, you do so more and more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from immorality; 4 that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, 5 not in the passion of lust like heathens who do not know God; 6 that no man transgress, and wrong his brother in this matter, be cause the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we solemnly forewarned you. 7 For God has not called us for uncleanness, but in holiness. 8 Therefore who ever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.
9 But concerning love of the brethren you have no need to have any one write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another; 10 and indeed you do love all the brethren throughout Macedonia. But we exhort you, brethren, to do so more and more, 11 to aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we charged you; 12 so that you may command the respect of outsiders, and be dependent on nobody.
The Coming of the Lord
13 But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first; 17 then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.

Paul exhorts the community to refrain from immorality and not live by lustful passions but strive for purity. Lord, how am I doing with purity in my life? Purity of heart and of body? Help me invite you into the areas of impurity in my life, that I may conduct myself in a way to please you, my Lord.

1 Por lo demás, hermanos, os rogamos y
os exhortamos en el Señor Jesús a que,
conforme aprendisteis de nosotros sobre el
modo de comportaros y de agradar al Señor,
y tal como ya estáis haciendo, progreséis
cada vez más.
2 Pues conocéis los preceptos que os
dimos de parte del Señor Jesús. 3 Porque
ésta es la voluntad de Dios: vuestra santificación;
que os abstengáis de la fornicación:
4 que cada uno sepa guardar su
propio cuerpo santamente y con honor,
5 sin dejarse dominar por la concupiscencia,
como los gentiles, que no conocen
a Dios. 6 En este asunto, que nadie
abuse ni engañe a su hermano, pues el
Señor toma venganza de todas estas cosas,
como ya os advertimos y aseguramos;
7 porque Dios no nos llamó a la impureza,
sino a la santidad. 8 Por tanto, el
que menosprecia esto no menosprecia a
un hombre, sino a Dios, que además os
concede el don del Espíritu Santo.
9 En cuanto al amor fraterno, no tenéis
necesidad de que os escriba, pues
vosotros mismos habéis sido instruidos
por Dios para que os améis los unos a
los otros, 10 y, en efecto, así lo estáis poniendo
por obra con todos los hermanos
en toda Macedonia. Pero os encarecemos,
hermanos, a que progreséis más
11 y a que os esmeréis en vivir con serenidad,
ocupándoos de vuestros asuntos
y trabajando con vuestras manos,
como os lo ordenamos, 12 de modo que
os comportéis honradamente ante los
de fuera y no necesitéis de nadie.
13 No queremos, hermanos, que ignoréis
lo que se refiere a los que han
muerto, para que no os entristezcáis
como esos otros que no tienen esperanza.
14 Porque si creemos que Jesús murió
y resucitó, de igual manera también
Dios, por medio de Jesús, reunirá con
Él a los que murieron. 15 Así pues, como
palabra del Señor, os transmitimos lo siguiente:
nosotros, los que vivamos, los
que quedemos hasta la venida del Señor,
no nos anticiparemos a los que hayan
muerto; 16 porque, cuando la voz del
arcángel y la trompeta de Dios den la
señal, el Señor mismo descenderá del
cielo, y resucitarán en primer lugar los
que murieron en Cristo; 17 después, nosotros,
los que vivamos, los que quedemos,
seremos arrebatados a las nubes
junto con ellos al encuentro del Señor
en los aires, de modo que, en adelante
estemos siempre con el Señor. 18 Por tanto,
animaos mutuamente con estas palabras.
Pregunta de Lectio Divina del día de hoy
Pablo exhorta a la comunidad a abstenerse de la inmoralidad y a no vivir de pasiones lujuriosas, sino a procurar la pureza. Señor, ¿Cómo estoy con la pureza en mi vida? ¿Pureza de corazón y de cuerpo? Ayúdame a invitarte a entrar en las áreas de impureza de mi vida, para que pueda comportarme de una manera que te agrade, mi Señor.
