Commentary on the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians, Chapter 12:
Paul continues his guidance to the Church in Corinth about their liturgical gatherings, turning now to the use of diverse spiritual gifts. The variety of spiritual gifts all flow from the same Spirit, not to be used in a competitive or divisive way, but for the “common good” (vs. 4-11). Paul uses the image of the human body to describe this common good, that all “members” (parts) of the body truly belong and that God’s plan is “that there may be no discord in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another” (vs. 12-27). As believers, we are baptized into this one body of Christ, and “drink of one Spirit” (vs. 12-13, 27).

Spiritual Gifts
1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were heathen, you were led astray to mute idols, however you may have been moved. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus be cursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit.
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
One Body with Many Members
12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body — Jews or Greeks, slaves or free — and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But as it is, God arranged the organs in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single organ, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body which seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and those parts of the body which we think less honorable we invest with the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior part,25 that there may be no discord in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.
27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the Church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, then healers, helpers, administrators, speakers in various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

12 1 En cuanto a los dones espirituales,
no quiero, hermanos, que estéis en la
ignorancia. 2 Sabéis que, cuando erais gentiles,
os dejabais arrastrar hacia los ídolos
mudos. 3 Por eso os declaro que nadie que
hable en el Espíritu de Dios dice: «¡Anatema
Jesús!», y nadie puede decir: «¡Señor Jesús!
», sino por el Espíritu Santo.
4 Hay, sí, diversidad de dones, pero
el Espíritu es el mismo; 5 y diversidad de
ministerios, pero el Señor es el mismo;
6 y diversidad de acciones, pero Dios es
el mismo, que obra todo en todos. 7 A
cada uno se le concede la manifestación
del Espíritu para provecho común: 8 a
uno se le concede por el Espíritu palabra
de sabiduría, a otro palabra de ciencia
según el mismo Espíritu; 9 a uno fe
en el mismo Espíritu, a otro don de curaciones
en el único Espíritu; 10 a uno
poder de obrar milagros, a otro profecía,
a otro discernimiento de espíritus; a
uno diversidad de lenguas, a otro interpretación
de lenguas. 11 Pero todas estas
cosas las realiza el mismo y único Espíritu,
que las distribuye a cada uno según
quiere.
12 Porque así como el cuerpo es uno
y tiene muchos miembros, y todos los
miembros del cuerpo, aun siendo muchos,
son un solo cuerpo, así también
Cristo. 13 Porque todos nosotros, tanto
judíos como griegos, tanto siervos
como libres, fuimos bautizados en un
mismo Espíritu para formar un solo
cuerpo. Y todos hemos bebido de un
solo Espíritu. 14 Pues tampoco el cuerpo
es un solo miembro, sino muchos.
15 Si el pie dijera: «Como no soy mano,
no soy del cuerpo», no por eso dejaría
de ser del cuerpo. 16 Y si dijera el oído:
«Como no soy ojo, no soy del cuerpo»,
no por eso dejaría de ser del cuerpo.
17 Si todo el cuerpo fuera ojo, ¿dónde estaría
el oído? Si todo fuera oído, ¿dónde
estaría el olfato? 18 Ahora bien, Dios
dispuso cada uno de los miembros en
el cuerpo como quiso. 19 Si todos fueran
un solo miembro, ¿donde estaría
el cuerpo? 20 Ciertamente muchos son
los miembros, pero uno solo el cuerpo.
21 No puede el ojo decir a la mano:
«No te necesito»; ni tampoco la cabeza
a los pies: «No os necesito». 22 Más
aún, los miembros del cuerpo que parecen
más débiles son más necesarios;
23 y a los miembros del cuerpo que parecen
más viles, los rodeamos de mayor
honor, y a los indecorosos los tratamos
con mayor decoro; 24 los miembros decorosos,
en cambio, no necesitan más.
Dios ha dispuesto el cuerpo dando mayor
honor a lo que carecía de él, 25 para
que no haya división en el cuerpo, sino
que todos los miembros se preocupen
por igual unos de otros. 26 Si un miembro
padece, todos los miembros padecen
con él; y si un miembro es honrado,
todos los miembros se gozan con él.
27 Vosotros sois cuerpo de Cristo, y cada
uno un miembro de él.
28 Y Dios los dispuso así en la Iglesia:
primero apóstoles, segundo profetas,
tercero doctores, luego el poder de
obrar milagros, después el don de curaciones,
de asistencia a los necesitados,
de gobierno, de diversidad de lenguas.
29 ¿Son todos apóstoles? ¿O todos profetas?
¿O todos doctores? ¿O todos tienen
poder de obrar milagros? 30 ¿Tienen todos
don de curación? ¿O hablan todos
lenguas? ¿O todos tienen don de interpretación?
31 Aspirad a los carismas mejores. Sin
embargo, todavía os voy a mostrar
un camino más excelente.

Comenzando en el verso cuatro, Pablo enseña acerca de los dones espirituales que nos son dados "para el bien común." Espíritu Santo, ¿Qué dones me has dado? ¿Cómo quieres que use estos dones para el bién común y la construcción del Cuerpo de Cristo?
