Fasting

"... his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?"  And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting."  Mark 9:28b-29

Fasting is a powerful form of prayer.  In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus testifies that there is some evil which must be dealt with by 'prayer and fasting'. He is giving us a tool to use against the evil that we face in this world. Right now we are all facing a very unique situation like none of us have faced before. It is already a great challenge and will likely become more so as the days and weeks progress. We are being thrust into a situation where we will be without many comforts and normalities of every day life. Jesus' form of fasting should shape our attitude as we face these sacrifices. Offer them to Jesus in union with the sacrifices he experienced. He accepts them readily and uses them for the spiritual good of others.

And if you are able during this time of COVID-19 outbreak consider offering your Lenten fasting for your community and for the country.  Consider what else you might sacrifice, like:

  • Don't put cream in your coffee
  • Don't drink any coffee
  • Take a smaller portion at dinner
  • Setting aside a certain amount of time for silence
  • Don't drink alcohol for a week
  • Don't put salt on your food
