Thomas Megargle

College II
St. John Vianney College Seminary
Home Parish: St. Patrick, Brighton

Interests: Fencing, volleyball, racquetball, scuba diving, reading

My first encounter with a possible priestly vocation occurred when I was around ten. The priest at our parish came up to me and asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. I don’t remember my response, but I do remember his next words being “Why don’t you be a priest?”

I didn’t think about the priesthood for a long time. Although I went to daily Mass with my family and loved altar serving and being a lector, the thought of becoming a priest never really rose above a rattling in the back of my mind.

However, my plans were not God’s plans and in my junior year of high school I began to seriously consider a vocation to the priesthood. During this time, I continued to attend daily Mass, go to Confession and lector. I visited St. John Vianney Seminary twice - once with Fr. Jerry Vincke and once with my father - loved it and entered this year as one of the seminary’s “newmen.”

The inspiring examples of numerous priests who gave so much for the faith, along with the support of my family, not a little bit of encouragement by all the “daily Mass-ers,” and, most of all, the grace of God, were instrumental in my making of this decision. Although I have only been here at St. John Vianney Seminary for a little over two months now, I hope to continue on in this, my vocation, if it be the will of God.
